Those are some pretty sweet purchases there, EWO. Is "Cowboy Bebop: Remix" an entirely different, stand-alone series, or does it add on to the original?
That's another one of those anime series' I've been interested in for a long time, but always felt too intimidated to get into because I have no idea where to start. Another one like this is that "Neon Genesis Evangelion" (or is it just "Evangelion"? See, that shows how lost I am).
I scored some awesome buys online today with some old kung fu movies.
I got...
Five Deadly Venoms - the legendary kung-fu classic; I'll finally get to see it!
The Blade - Tsui Hark's apparent masterpiece; really looking forward to this one
The Magic Blade - another classic from the Shaw Brothers that I've been dying to see
All of them are brand new, and were less than $5 each.

Cowboy Bebop Remix is basically just a remastered version of the series. Their is only the main series for Cowboy Bebop and then the movie.

While not really my cup of tea, The Blade is undeniably a terrific film. I blind bought it over a year ago after reading DD's praise.

I went to buy candy for a party and left with a giant bag of Robin Eggs and copies of The Big Tease and Albert Brooks's Mother. They were both blind buys, but since they aren't horror movies I won't bother posting their cover arts.

Red tagged at Borders, so I actually got it for a reasonable price.
BTW: Those of you who've wanted the Criterion version of 'RAN' would do well to buy it now. Word is that not only has the BluRay been removed from their release schedule but the DVD's going out of print.

I went over to the Criterion Forum and there was the Ran thread sitting on top. Lots of talk. Got me off the fence in a hurry and I just ordered it through Amazon Marketplace. I want it for AK as much as for Ran.
Thanks for the tip.

Speaking of Criterion, they have a Blu-ray exchange program for $25. Send them your old DVD of a Criterion movie, and they send you the Bluray disc.
At first I thought this was really cool, but then I realized that with $25 you can just buy from Amazon and then sell your DVD for $10 on Craigslist.

Yeah, I asked them about Ran and they told me that they suddenly ran into rights issues so they couldn't release that film anymore. But in its place, they're going to release another color Kurosawa film on Bluray. I'm guessing it's Kagemusha.

They control so much great studio era Japan stuff and so many classic european films I just figured everyone had a stack. I don't need to make a list do I? Maybe I don't own as many as I think but I'd guess I have about 100 DVDs a fourth of which or greater are Criterions.

Just got in the mail from YesAsia:
Achilles & the Tortoise
Still Walking
I Just Didn't Do It (by Masayuki Suo--never have seen a Japanese movie about the law before!)
I'm so stoked about all of these. Anyone know what the run time of Achilles & the Tortoise is listed as 150 mins.: 114 min. + 36 min?

Well, Criterion is simply not all that available in Argentina. I've only seen a handful of them in only one DVD store that's very specialized and exhaustive, and they're obviously at a very high price. They're all imports since Criterion doesn't do R4 releases. I think it's simply not profitable to import them - not many would buy them, what with the lack of Spanish subtitles and stuff.
Ran I bought in NY, and Naked Lunch I borrowed from a guy who went to live to Perú and never claimed it back.

Just in time for its upcoming 35th anniversary (June 20).

Ah, cool. While my memory of the film is fading, Dennis Hopper's performance in River's Edge is unsettling, perverse, eccentric, and tragic. His character in that film is much more sympathetic than Frank in Blue Velvet.
It's a rather haunting, doleful and altogether uneasy experience... but certainly worth a watch. Given its troubling ambiguities, the dark themes and the mostly plaintive and eerie tone that it establishes, it's definitely the kind of film that will leave you feeling melancholy.
Oh, and Crispin Glover gives an indelibly frantic performance. You'll see what I mean.
Oh, I've seen both movies many times already. I'm planning to rewatch them together soon in honor of Hopper. I love River's Edge (though not as much as Over the Edge which has a number of similarities and was co-written by the director of River's Edge).

Yesterday I took advantage of Barnes and Noble's Buy 2 DVDs/Blu Rays, get one free sale. Only Spartan wasn't a blind buy, although I did view Logan's Run last night and I'm going to watch Trespass this week. I figured that Logan's Run was going to be awesome, and it was, and that Trespass had a good cast and was directed by Walter Hill so it has to be at least really cool and entertaining.

Nope. But I've only rebought a handful so far. Off the top of my head:
1. 2001 A Space Oddesey
2. Reservoir Dogs
3. Die Hard 4 Pack
4. Back to the Future Trilogy (awesome extras)
5. Departed
6. Mission Impossible Trilogy
7. Spider-man Trilogy
The Star Wars Sega, Indiana Jones, LotR Extended, Terminaor, Aliens and the Matrix are the only remaining collections that I would consider rebuying. Everything else is staying DVD. And all new titles are Blu-ray except for horror movies, unless the Blu-ray has some amazing extras that I really want. Like some sweet Evil Dead Trilogy pack thingy.

I have that Casino Royale Blu-ray too. Looks great.
As you probably know, I buy a lot of horror. So my thing is buying used DVDs off Amazon. They're so cheap ranging from $0.50 to $5 and the discs are in great shape. The boxes are usually a little worn but I don't care. As long as the disc plays.
I've slowed down my new purchases big time. Very little excites me anymore to buy the Bly-ray. Plus, a guy at work is one of those "Needs to buy whatevers coming out on that Tuesday and it doesn't matter what movie it is". So he lends me the movie after he's done with it. It's like a free Blu-ray nextflix ontop of my regular Netflix.
I do have a fairly large collection (600 DVDs and roughly 50 Blu-Rays and probably 90% of those purchases were when I was in college- 02-07)
I did run out and buy Avatar and Inception immeditely when they were for sale. Totally worth it.

It actually was delayed shipment by Amazon, one of the few times ever something I've ordered from them didn't ship when they say it would. So I got it Monday, but haven't had a time to watch it since this week I have class on Tues and Sat. (I have class every other week which usually means I have tons of homework to finish up)
I plan on watching it Sat night after class.
Now, getting back to Alien Anthology, Is there anything different between the Region 1 version and the Region free one?
Look at the price difference! $69.99 (http://www.amazon.com/Alien-Anthology-Blu-ray-Sigourney-Weaver/dp/B001AQO3QA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1318423105&sr=8-1) versus £16.99 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003AQBYUG/ref=s9_simh_gw_p74_d6_g74_i1?p f_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0P167JDSTWH8YV37K4DK&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467128533&pf_rd_i=468294). I order via play.com
A great site, free shipping from UK to Belgium, don't know the rules to the USA. But if it is region 2, then I'm not sure you're gonna be able to play it.
And you'll probably have to pay a surplus, but check the site. Check their rules!

To me, that's not something I'd buy. I already own the Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection on DVD which includes 14 of the 15 movies with the exception of North by Northwest. Luckily, North by Northwest appears to be non box set exclusive so I can just pick that up individually. I can't imagine the Blu-ray quality is much better than the DVD quality to justify the cost of this thing. I'd suggest you guys look at the $80 DVD boxset (http://www.amazon.com/Alfred-Hitchcock-The-Masterpiece-Collection/dp/B000A1INJE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1340371176&sr=8-2&keywords=Alfred+Hitchcock) rather than whatever this is gonna cost.

They probably will though, eventually I reckon. Obviously, they're keeping quiet on that so that folks will fork out for the boxset.
@Duke: perhaps you're right, but I've definitely given up on bying any more Dvd's unless it's something super rare that will never come out on blu-ray. But make no mistake, North by Northwest for instance has been granted a stellar blu-ray transfer. Same for Psycho. I can totally see the same happening to most of the others.

My problem with that set is that the majority of the movies it contains are so far from a "masterpiece" I should be able to sue for false advertising. Hitch's best films are missing. Does anyone really want to own Torn Curtain? Topaz? Family Plot? Saboteur? I'd personally include The Man Who Knew Too Much, Marnie, and The Trouble With Harry on the list of titles not worth owning, but I know at least one poster here will defend each of those titles. Either way, when half of the set is mired in mediocrity, I don't know how anyone could get excited about it.

K-Fan, couldn't you say that a lesser Hitchcock is still a lot better than films from other directors? It's been a while since I've seen Marnie and The Man Who Knew too Much, but I do recall they're movies worth seeing, but maybe not owning. The other four you mentioned I haven't seen though. I guess it depends on what folks wanna do with their money and whether they regularly buy movies and such. This boxset will be far too expensive for me, but I do hope they're released individually later on.

No. A mediocre movie is a mediocre movie, no matter who is at the helm. It just annoys me that Hitch has so many films I do consider "masterpiece" films (even though I hate that word), and yet they litter his box sets with lesser stuff, trapping prospective buyers into owning movies they don't want (or passing, obviously). I'm sure it has something to do with rights, but it's annoying nonetheless.

The titles in this box set are simply (outside of NxNW, which is a Warners title) all the titles that Universal owns the rights to. I think Hitchcock is certainly a director where one can learn to appreciate his mastery by watching both his hits and misses.
Kurosawa Fan
06-24-2012, 04:07 PM
Yeah, like I said, I figured it was a rights issue. Either way, perhaps appreciating his mastery can come from viewing his misses, but that doesn't mean owning his misses because they've been stuck in a box set that's supposed to represent his best work.

Just like most everyone else, I consider Hitcock one of the all-time greats. But my taste in his works seems a little off-kilter.
In the "10 out of 10 masterpieces" tier, I rank some of his more commercially successful films (Psycho and North By Northwest) as well as some of the films I rarely see talked about in either fandom or more critical talk (like Rebecca and Rope).
Yeah, I love Vertigo and Rear Window (two I most frequently see rated as a number one favorite of Hitchcock's work) but they're not top for me.

I've learned my lesson from DVD years. I've cut back my buying so much. In 5 years everything will be streaming to TVs and mobile devices in HD. Blu-ray will be what DVD is today. The money spent just isn't worth something you're gonna watch once and put it on a shelf for a rainy day.
I see some guys on Blu-ray.com who own 1000 Blu-rays and wonder what their life is like. Even if you were a billionaire and all you did was watch movies all day, it's not like there's enough hours in the week to watch everything. What's the point?

Movies are pretty much the only thing I spend money on. I don't drink or smoke (most of my co-workers spend more a month on cigarettes or alcohol then I do on movies) and the majority of the movies I buy are cheap and give me something to collect. I'm working on getting every Takashi Miike US release currently.

I ended up picking up that Christopher Nolan blu-ray set. It was $28 shipped from wbshop.com and comes with $8 movie cash to Dark Knight Rises. So basically $20 for Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Insomnia, Inception and Memento.

Goodfellas, Raging Bull, V for Vendetta and Constantine were all $4.99 from the best buy trade and save. Midnight in Paris was $9.99.

Nice haul. I appreciate your love for Constantine. There's some neat things going on in that movie even if it's not really that good.

I haven't seen it since it was in theaters and I liked it then but I don't think I would have bought it if it wasn't for the fact that it was basically free since it was $5 and came with $5 to see The Dark Knight Rises.

Bought the Criterion version of The Gold Rush. First DVD/Blu-Ray I've bought in a year or so. The menu presentation is quite beautiful and the two versions of the film are slick looking and sounding. Still digging into the extras. Got me to go on a Chaplin marathon. City Lights is even better after all these years.

Finally! I'm hoping to get a 3d tv by the end of the year. My hd ready sony lcd from 6 years ago isn't cutting it anymore.
Edit: arghh, but it won't have the extended cut. Sucks!

Steelbook version. The Region 2 version has dramatically improvid PQ compared to the old region 1 that came out a few years ago. I had to order via amazon.fr since on most other sites, the price is ridiculously high.

Please let me know about the quality in your opinion. I don't really trust the ones on Blu-ray.com.

Ok, I will, but I've seen comparison shots on other sites and the improvements are clear as day. To be honest, you should purchase with confidence.:)
Why wouldn't you trust the ones on blu-ray.com? They really seem to know their stuff.

Because those guys buy hundreds and hundreds of Blus and sometimes I feel like they are just trying to compete to who can buy more, rather than actually looking at the quality.

Well, whenever a review gets a good score on the video front (4.5/5.0), I always nod in agreement when I see their screencaps. I'm no expert, but the pictures never lie. :)

Those reviews I generally feel less biased towards, but it's the discussion forums I question.
Not sure which blu ray of Terminator I saw, but the video quality was amazing.
HOWEVER, when Arnie shoots his .45, it sounds like a suppressed weapon.

The remastered region 2 blu-ray has added a 5.1 DD HD track, but has dropped the original mono track, much to the dismay of purists everywhere.

Interesting pivot! Is physical media dying this quickly? Or is this because of 4K UHD Blu-ray ? Is that really a thing?
Samsung will no longer introduce new Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray player models in the US market,” a Samsung spokesperson told CNET.
Samsung launched its last 4K players in 2017 and didn’t add any new models to its lineup in 2018. A high-end 4K player for 2019 along the lines of its UBD-M9500 was in the works, a Forbes report says, but has now been scrapped.
