Yeah, I'd vote for The Big Lebowksi, but I don't think everyone thinks Dr. Strangelove is funny.

I actually find that one to be one of the weaker in the series. I used to love it but I re-watched it recently and it just doesn't hold up for me. I prefer A Shot in the Dark and the first one.

Yeah, when you don't like Monty Python, I just don't know how to have a conversation with you about comedy. It's the baseline for comparison. It is akin to not liking Shakespeare, The Beatles, Dr. Seuss or Stephen Sondheim.

The fastest way to do this is just to have Melville list the movies he finds funny (8 or so, at a guess :)) and we just have a vote on them.

Seriously? I've only seen it once. I remember it being funny, but not as funny as Airplane! I'll check it out again.

Well, to be honest, I was just speaking on my behalf. But it'd be way cooler if you agreed with me.

I love Hot Shots! almost to the same degree I detest Top Gun. Perhaps there is a link there.

I think it has brilliant moments, but those are peppered throughout a little too much filler. But yes, I do love KFM - a lot.

I don't want to rain on any parades, but I am not charmed by Airplane!. I do not hate it, nor would I even say "no" to watching it again. But rapid-fire spoof movies are not my cup of tea. I prefer Hot Shots anyway.

While I've been coming around to it lately, I'm still not ready to say I find The Big Lebowski funny, at least not laugh out loud funny.

I don't think it's so much a matter of like or dislike. The question is does it make you laugh? Laughter is a strange, essentially uncontrollable reaction. I like a lot of the movies listed here including City Lights and find many of them to be amusing -- smile inducing. But I've only seen maybe 10 movies in my life that made me laugh out loud uncontrollably.

I think His Girl Friday provides yucks of a broad and uproarious sort. I don't think enough have seen it to reach a meaningful consensus though.

I agree with #5, actually. The first half of #3 is funny, but it wears out its welcome well before the end. #2 is not really ha-ha funny, but a good movie. #4 is pretty funny, but weaker than many other spoofs. Haven't seen #1.

Exactly. A theater full of people slapping their knees and gasping for breath during the trailer for Old Dogs is one of the low points of my theatergoing experiences.

I have a better idea for this thread since we'll never agree on a single film consensus... how about listing some favorite underseen comedies or just favorite comedies in general so we can get some recommendations out of this.
