See Pitchfork's selections here (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/47282-staff-list-top-50-music-videos-of-2007/page_1).

As stereotypical as it may be these days, Pitchfork is still a great place for music information and their year end special features are always entertaining. Perhaps this thread belongs in the music forum, however music videos are an interesting and exciting genre of filmmaking and often a canvas for innovation, experimentation, and up and coming directors. If enough interest generates, perhaps it will spawn a thread dedicated entirely to music video posts and discussion.

I can't remember what the last new music video I watched was. It must have been Now here is No Where, by the Secret Machines, or Take Me Out, by Franz Ferdinand. Yeah, it's been a long time!

I do miss the old days though, when some indie band would just take some crappy 8mm camera and shoot a video. Say, for instance, Camper Van Beethoven's video for Take the Skinheads Bowling. I would like to see something like this now.

Beirut had an amazing video for "Nantes" all done in one take with a standard retail camera. Pitchfork chose the video for "Elephant Gun" which is pretty solid, but I think this one is more creative and moving, and appropriate for the list considering they picked a Jens Lekman video produced by La Blogotheque.

Watching it again, I can notice a few hidden cuts, but that's okay. Even though the opening shot of Snake Eyes is actually something like 13 shots masked together, makes it no less impressive.

I haven't seen a good music video in years. You must not watch enough then :| Hell good music videos can even be found on the mainstream networks like MTV (when they actually show 'em which is almost never) and VH1 (a channel in danger of becoming MTV).

I shall go through that list and watch the videos listed when I'm not running around packing for my trip back to my home town. I love music videos. I worry that they'll stop making them.

I hadn't seen that Sergio Leone fan clip for Arcade Fire's "My Body Is A Cage" or the vids for "Don't You Evah" by Spoon, and UGK's "Int'l Players Anthem" but since I did with this list last night I've have been in love with them.

But I had seen the videos for Bat For Lashes, Bjork, Feist, Daft Punk and Justice live performaces, and the ones for Jay-Z's "Roc Boys" and Zach Galifianikis and Will Oldham's somehow official video for Kanye's "Can't Tell Me Nothing", and was happily surprised to see them all included.

Also, that Robyn video is all kinds of ridiculousness and hilarity. This is really the same one who was big here back in the '90s?

I don't think they even really try to hide the cuts that much anyway. Looks much better to cut into slo-mo then to have a continuous shot that goes from normal to slo to normal... not only difficult but just lacks punch.

I kept waiting for the Dan Deacon video to get less crappy, but then it didn't.

I like it if it's in a club with a DJ that changes it much sooner then the length of the track. Otherwise it's just repetitive and dull after six minutes.

I disagree completely, but someone who likes The Editors certainly knows more of boring music than I do. ;) Honestly though, the electronic music on that list is hardly representative of the best out there this year. Only "Beautiful Life" would be up there for me and that video (which is lame) has an inferior, shortened version that's not nearly as good as the album cut. Well, I also love "D.A.N.C.E." for it's clever updating of the cheesy 80s pop aesthetic...but the rest of that album is quite different. Anyway, I can't say I was a fan of electronic music more than a few years ago (when all my roommate would play was Paul Oakenfold and crappy remixes), but it's actually quite a diverse and exciting genre once you're willing to sink your teeth into it.

I agree with a lot of what you said here. The "Beautiful Life" video was crap and The Editors are excruciatingly dull. Electronic music can be very dull as well, just as any genre has it's lows, but you're right, there is a lot out there to appreciate. Anyways this thread shouldn't be about the music, it's about the videos.

The nice thing about listening to music without the slightest hint of reputation is that I can listen without any pretensions. It's nice to be free from the binds of only appreciating what's "cool". I heard an Editors song on TV (The Weight of the World), thought it sounded pretty great, grabbed the album it was on, gave it a few listens and thought it was decent. I have no idea how that reflects my taste in music, but then again I don't read Pitchfork and the like.

As for techno, perhaps I haven't sunk my teeth in, as you say, but what I have heard (and it's not just limited to the videos on Pitchfork) has, for the most part, been based heavily on repetition, which doesn't excite me. Plus, half the time I can't tell one song from another. I've heard songs which I've liked, I never said it was throwaway, but for the most part it's a boring genre that seems appreciated by the "club crowd", with which I have zero in common.

What have you heard?

I'm on the fence about modern techno. I didn't like a lot of the buzzworthy releases this year (especially The Field - hate hate hate), but I still find some interesting artists in the genre. Broadcast and Vitalic are good examples, and LCD Soundsystem and M.I.A., if they count.

I don't understand the hype for The Field album, it's pretty boring, but I'd consider the LCD Soundsytem album among the years best, along with the new Justice and Dan Deacon releases. I love the new M.I.A. as well although I consider it to be more hip-hop, but genre labeling really only serves as an organizational tool.

some other good electronic albums in 07:
M83, Caribou, Blockhead, Múm, Prefuse 73, Simian Mobile Disco, Madlib, DNTEL.

Off the top of my head, the following bands I've heard fairly extensively (my brother and brother-in-law both like techno): Paul Oakenfold, Olive, Moby, KMFDM, Orbital, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, Fatboy Slim, Hooverphonic

There are others, but that's the stuff I've heard the most. I realize I'm lumping all of the sub-genre's into "techno", but I was using techno as a broad term. Some of this stuff might classify as Electronica or Trip-hop, etc.

I'm with you on most of those, but I think of them as more mainstream techno, which isn't nearly as good. I'd give some of the more indie-techno a try, like the stuff origami recommended. I also highly recommend LCD Soundsystem, but not the All My Friends video on the Pitchfork list. The long version is immensely better.

Good "indie"/"foreign" "Techno" and "Electronic" artists :

Air
BT
Calvin Harris (he's sorta mainstream in EU)
Cut Copy
Death in Vegas
Digitalism
DJ Shadow
Ladytron
M83
Sasha
The Presets
Royksopp
VHS or Beta
Underworld

And if none of this "new" stuff floats your boat, go with New Order or Kraftwerk.

Well, I love The Field, but that's certainly an album based on repetition but unlike hacks like Oakenfold, Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, etc., that repetition is driven by subtle shifts and builds that, at least to me, make it an incredibly rewarding listen.

Pantha du Prince's album from this year is amazing and certainly more immediately gratifying. And um, staying on track, here's a non-video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkEItawfg3Q) of my favorite track, "Saturn Strobe". You should check it out KF, just to see, since most of what you've heard, I'd group under mainstream club-thumpers/"unce unce unce unce" music, which all pretty much sucks. :)

I heard The Editors through my roommate who liked them and I knew nothing about them other than their Britishness. Whoever said they were an Interpol derivative is right and considering Interpol is becoming derivative of themselves (though I still like their new album even though it's clear they're going downhill), that's really not a good thing. If you like The Editors style, definitely be sure to check out Into the Bright Lights.

And actually staying on track, here's a cool video for "Parachutes" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbfLycuhhjI) by Shugo Tokumaru that I posted in the listening thread last week.

Have you heard The Field's Sounds of Light - Nordic Light Hotel CD? It's on iTunes. It was a weird find considering there is no information to be found regarding it aside from a single review online. Not on his website, nor his MySpace. However, on the Nordic Light Hotel's website, they have a music video for Over the Ice.

Anyways, From Here We Go Sublime is probably my favorite CD ever. I've listened to it too many times. Pantha du Prince is a close second as my favorite this year. Then comes Panda Bear's CD, Animal Collective's, and then maybe Black Kids' or Stars of the Lid's (to be fair, I haven't listened to it all the way through, but it has several moments of beauty.)

The Stars of the Lids album is like 3 hours long, but I'm sure you'll finish it some day. ;) It really is gorgeous even though I don't fawn over it like some people.

Let me know what you think because it's pretty good; probably top ten of the year material. Also, The Field has a nice track on Kompakt's Pop Ambient 2007 compilation, which is a good CD. Black Kids allow a free download of their album on their website, in case you didn't know, and it's pretty good. I'm sure I'll get to finishing the Stars of the Lid CD, and you're right about it being gorgeous. I just have to be in the right mood to listen to it.

I want to pick up Ricardo Villalobos' remix album Fabric 36, Thomas Fehlmann's Honigpumpe, and Chromatics' Night Drive (which may be hard to get unless I want to order it over Paypal), so if you've heard anything about these, let me know.

I really disliked the Villalobos album and the Chromatics best stuff this year was used up on the far superior After Dark compilation, though Night Drive isn't all that bad. I haven't heard Honigpumpe yet, but I have it and heard great things from one guy I trust. One under-the-radar album that I love (though it took a few listens to grow on me) was Pole's Steingarten. Arp's In Light is also worth checking out, since it's basically like a more ambience-driven Kraftwerk.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll look into them.

I'm suprised to hear that you aren't a fan of that Villalobos CD, since everyone seems to really love it. I may look into some of his earlier work, but I've heard he's really indulgent, so I may just skip that road. People say if you like From Here We Go Sublime, you'll like Honigpumpe, so I'll probably go buy it when I get some extra money. Same goes for the After Dark compilation. I, myself, am more into melodic ambient techno, as you can tell.

Woops I meant the Battles - Atlas track, the manipulated vocals element, not Dizzy Rascal.

That's a good song. The CD is a little bit uneven though as a whole. The poster that comes along in the jacket is cool.

The Battles album is probably my favorite of the year.

Just got around to listening to Honigpumpe a couple times and it's fantastic. Be sure to pick that one up, though I'd say it's a little more along the lines of Pantha than The Field...which means it's still great. :)

Not sure what it was that turned me off so completely to Fabric 36. Quite simply, I found it grating and uninspired. It does seem like everyone loves it, so don't let me stop you from checking it out.

Nice, I'll be sure to check it (and the After Dark compilation) out. And do let me know what you think of that CD by The Field that's on iTunes if you decide to get it. It's pretty good.

Here's a great anti-glamour video for Roisin Murphy's "Overpowered" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlFjf1pWk2c). I wasn't a fan of the album, but I loved her work on Herbert's album last year and this song is awesome, so I'll have to give it another shot. And yeah, she's smoking hot.

I saw this recently, I believe it made the Pitchfork Top 50...
anyways, most disappointing video on the list had to be the Mike Mills collaboration with Miranda July for the Blonde Redhead video.

I however did enjoy this video art style collage from Black Dice:

I think I even saw Bobik the dog from the commercials I posted in the Shots thread, but the best part is the clip of the guy getting hit in the balls with the pool ball. Nothing like cheap laughs.

The "1 2 3 4" video makes my soul explode with love. Big, unironic dance numbers >>> everything else ever.
