I moved this from the Shutter Island thread:

It's not that they need to be different, they just need to go away for a while. Same with superheroes.

I love zombies and I love superheroes even more, but it is very much possible to have too much of a good thing. Especially when 8 out of 10 of that good thing actually sucks.

The thing is I feel that zombie movies have hit a dead end. They probably should go away for a while, but something needs to change or they may as well stay gone.

I appreciated Fido for what it tried to do -- it's essentially Far From Heaven with zombies.

I think the most interesting things that have been done in zombie movies are:

1. Bub, because he was a genuine character who even seemed to have an awareness of the world around him.

2. The opening of Land of the Dead, because it showed a glimpse of zombies forming something like an all-zombie society.

3. The moment where a character in Land of the Dead chooses to become a zombie (to see how the other half live).

These all seem so pregnant with possibilities to me.

Noooo... they're undead.

Zombie movies will be made so long as people fear the other-which is what zombies really represent. Plus the whole terrorifying thought of being eaten alive by your own loved ones.

We're due for a healthcare-related zombie movie.

Yes they are, and if you hesitated long enough to ask the question, so are you.

Zombies are done for a while. There's nothing fresh to unearth.

Right. 20 minutes later, I came up with this:

"Zombie virus outbreak. Because of limited supply on the cure, the government wants to take over the distribution, but fringe conservative groups protest and strongarm senators into blocking the measure and calling it unconstitutional, giving pharmaceutical companies the right to sell the cure at high prices. A marxist and a med student team up to rob hospitals and spread the cure in America's most zombie-infested areas, meeting resistance from both rednecks and deadnecks. Meanwhile, the POTUS faces his biggest challenge yet: delivering his promise of a bipartisan solution... or take some zombies the fuck down?"

One could argue that zombie-by-proxy movies like 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead '04 (which answers "We don't know" to the question), and The Crazies are paving the way for a new kind of "zombie" picture.

But I won't make that argument.

I'm down as long as Bong Joon-ho directs.

Zombies are boring, no matter what they're supposed to symbolize.

I have to repeat what someone said to you long ago here...

Your efforts to constantly be the #1 elitist on a board full of film elitists are tired, and much more boring than any zombie-based allegory could be.

Zombie films are generally the most intellectually interesting of the horror genre, since there's usually a hefty amount of subtextual weight. Zombies representing either distinct "others" that threaten our individuality, or more sympathetic figures not without their own charms and peculiarities. I can understand claims of boredom, since they're generally unintelligent, one-dimensional aggressors, but good directors have made much of them on story and symbolic levels. Like most filmmaking, it's not about inherent content, but stylistic/narrative delivery.

Cracked.com came up with some good reasons that might make a zombie apocalypse (http://www.cracked.com/article/136_5-reasons-you-secretly-want-zombie-apocalypse/) appealing to some people.

of course they are dead. the ones that aren't dead and are just infected aren't zombies.

When did zombies stop terrifying people to the deepest, most unfathomable depths of their souls? That is their primary function!!! Hrumph.

EDIT: To be more clear, that should really be: "Dat eez their primary function!" You know, mock-fascist.

Has any movie other than Braindead explored zombie sex?

Maybe Fido. I haven't seen it.

Fido has zombie-human sex, not zombie-zombie sex.

But the best zombie-human sex exploration is in this movie (http://www.justpressplay.net/movies/movie-news/4880-indiefest-09-review-qdeadgirlq.html). One of my favorites of last year.
