Alright, after a three year hiatus I'm starting to get back into music. As a result I'm starting this thread to contain all my thoughts about the new and old music I explore. I may post more extended thoughts at times but this thread is mostly about listing music I enjoy and looking for new recommendations. I'll check out new albums, let you know if I like them or not, etc. For starters and to get a sense of my taste, here's a list of artists on my itunes that have songs I've selected as four or five stars.

So yeah this is far from reflective of everything I've listened to or everything I like. It's just what's on my itunes right now, but please feel free to recommend anything that's not already on this list. I may have already heard it but I'm trying to rebuild my collection (my computer was stolen a few years ago so I lost a lot of my music). My main genres are Jazz, Classical, Classic Rock, Indie Rock, Underground Hip-hop, Electronic... but I'm also open to trying others.

Cool - always down with more music discussion.

And what a great time to be getting back into music, with the great abundance of amazing CC Licensed stuff available. :)

It's a whole new world to explore, have fun.

So I went to a Nosaj Thing, Daedelus and Jogger concert last night. It was pretty good stuff. I spoke to Amir Yaghmai of Jogger and Nosaj Thing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEbTHir5itc) after the show, both really down to earth guys. Apparently Amir also plays in Charlotte Gainsbourg's band.

I linked a Nosaj Thing track. D, you'd probably like it.

The Shins
Wait, what Shins song did you give four or five stars? They seem like the lousiest of bland indie.

Actually in retrospect I didn't, misread my iTunes. I gave Young Pilgrams 3 stars.

I'd like to second Mellville's recommendation of Stan Getz's Getz/Gilberto. It is the best bassa-nova album you will ever listen to. Ever.

Along the same note, if you like Getz/Gilberto, I would throw in a recommendation for Getz & Charile Byrd's Jazz Samba.

Because it's too eclectic or?

Ya, it's mostly good stuff, but it's also all over the place

Er, if you're not above abandoning any semblence of integrity, there's a pretty righteous torrent floating around of Pitchfork's 500 best songs from the past I think 30 years or so. Relatively all-encompassing in terms of genre, so you get a nice taste of most everything

And an F minus for Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? You can't even take that minus away for The Rooker?

I long ago abandoned any semblance of integrity when it comes to copyright laws.

And no, even Rooker (though I like him) could not save that steaming pile.

I refuse to believe that those are real people. They can only be a parody of some sort.

More recs based on what I happen to be listening to:

Leila - "Mollie" and "Mettle"
Neu! - "Negativland"

I should probably cease my random recommendations. Have you listened to any of the bands recommended so far in this thread?

No, it turns out I'm actually not back into music again, I'm more into procrastination via internet flash games and staring blankly at the wall in total silence... but I promise to get back into music again within the next week! :)

haha. Link me to some good flash games. I've probably spent several hundred hours playing Free Cell in the last month. It's ceasing to be a distraction and instead further sapping my will to live.

OK fans of long-from drone rock (Neu!, old Stereolab, Acid Mothers Temple, The Necks, etc.) - here's your new favorite album. Two tracks, 45 minutes, probably less than 3 chords. Get ready for some heavy, hypnotic head-bobbing, drone-rock.

This album makes me want to get in a car and drive really far, really fast.

This album from 2009... (http://www.archive.org/details/ca317_mum)

I grabbed the vast majority of the recommendations from everyone so far and made a playlist.

It's 2365 songs or roughly 6.5 days of music.

I've already listened to 125 of those songs. I'm listening on shuffle though not album per album so I'll hold off on listing favorites for now as I may stumble across some particularly good songs in the not too distant future.

I'd suggest the NYC trio Medeski, Martin, and Wood. They're a nice blend of jazz, improv, funk, trip-hop, and African rhythms.
