Is this the thread where people get mad if you post your top 10 of 010 even if they're crappy movies because there hasn't been a decent release yet?As I said last year, if you put a bunch of films on your list just because you haven't seen that much, how is the reader supposed to know how much you liked each film? I wouldn't say I'm "mad" about it, but I dislike the ambiguity.

Also, a 99 for Terminator 2? It's almost certainly Cameron's most interesting film, but that seems a bit much. Also, what's the difference between a 99 and a 100 really? It's like trying to choose between Lola and Les Demoiselles de Rochefort.

Well that's what the ratings in my sig are for. Unless you want me to attach them to the movies as well.

Didn't we talk about this rating system before? I don't rate films at 100.

Didn't we talk about this rating system before? I don't rate films at 100.No, but let's not make this another discussion about ratings. I was just curious if there was some small thing that was holding T2 back from aesthetic perfectomundo, or if you were grading on a scale (i.e., It's pretty incredible but not quite in the same league as Au hasard Balthazar and Playtime). But now that I know that's your highest possible rating, my question becomes: Do you really think that's the best cinema can do? James Cameron? It's been a while since I've seen that particular film, but based on my more recent viewing of Avatar, I find him merely adequate as both a storyteller and a stylist. He's not attempting anything very original, either in terms of plot or style, and he demands very little of the viewer (and with the kind of budgets he works with, he can't afford to). Both T2 and Avatar are above-average for their genre, especially the former which has the advantages of two charismatic stars (Schwarzenegger and Hamilton) as opposed to none, better action scenes, and a more interesting story (particularly in its ambivalent feelings about technology), but if I seriously thought it was the best cinema had to offer, I'd have outgrown watching movies a long time ago.

Kim Hye-ja gives the female performance of . Its feel is very similar to [I]Memories of Murder: the solving of a violent mystery impeded by institutional roadblocks and punctuated with bleak, black humor (I guess a lot of that applies to The Host as well). Mesmerizing opening credits and closing sequence.

I probably owe it another chance, but I found Mother underwhelming compared to Bong's previous two. Kim Hye-ja is awesome, without a doubt, and there a couple great scenes, but overall it felt like a weaker effort. I was distracted by the aspect ratio, too, which probably sounds weird. I don't think I care for how Bong frames in widescreen.

To put it simply... I think it's the greatest action movie ever made and I don't think anything else comes close to challenging it... with the exception of Avatar. The way you phrase it, "best cinema had to offer" if I walked around thinking this phrase should be used when rating movies in a genre, I'd have found a new hobby.

Lazy and busy :/ Me and my friends go to the Paramount every tuesday because it's cheap, but that's pretty much the only time I've been to the theatre. I work 5-6 days a week right now, I don't even watch movies on dvd. I'm hoping to turn that around in July with Fantasia. I also am going to try and catch Amours ithis week.

Found this for your reading pleasure. I realize this year has stunk so far for mainstream releases but they could at least have Toy Story 3 in there. I haven't seen it but I'd imagine its at least as good as Please Give (which is solid but not amazing). I still think Greenberg is much, much better than many are giving it credit for.

Now that we're halfway through this (pretty uninspired) year...

Not a single four star film. Almost always by this time there's been at least one.

And even the films on this list already out on disc I'm not racing out to buy.Personally, 2010's been pretty good to me so far (I've even seen one four star movie), though I imagine that has a lot to do with my living, for the first five months of the year, in town only a few hours outside Montreal, which gets more specialized commercial movies. (In addition to my five favorites, I also belatedly caught up with My Dear Enemy and The White Ribbon, and I saw two terrific documentaries, Black Bus and Last Train Home, which have yet to open in New York.) It's only since I've moved back to Halifax, where there's less selection, that things have started to slow down.

Also, there's still a ton I haven't seen. Some films I'm looking forward to seeing when they come out on DVD are: Dogtooth, Everyone Else, Les Herbes folles, Mother, No One Knows About Persian Cats, The Oath, Le Père de mes enfants, Trash Humpers, Vincere, and Women Without Men--and that doesn't take into consideration commercial features which haven't yet been released in the US (like J'ai tué ma mère, which I saw in Montreal a year ago) or avant-garde movies.

You know a year is crappy when a remake of a shitty horror movie is on your top ten. Or when you don't even argue with your teenage cousins about how vehemently opposed you are to seeing Grown Ups with them. :frustrated:

Not really. I haven't posted thoughts one way or the other on it yet.

However, if it truly is a suckfest, I believe I can own up to that more easily, I think, than that of baby doll recognizing the opposite to be true. IMO, of course.

So, I've seen roughly 35 films from 2010 up to this point, and here are the twelve that stand out in particular so far (tiered for quality):

Excellent:
Everyone Else

Very Good/Solid:
Exit Through the Gift Shop
Dogtooth
The Kids Are All Right
Winter's Bone
I Am Love
Prodigal Sons
A Prophet

Quite good:
The Father of My Children
Fish Tank
Greenberg
I Killed My Mother

So, yeah, if 1/3 of the films I've seen this far have gotten ranked above "quite good," then the year hasn't been so bad.

One thing that's slightly disappointing this year is the lack of indie/foreign films that do make it to the bigger cineplexes. Where something like The Kids Are Alright, Winter's Bone, or Greenberg would usually hit my theaters, they're now being taken up by the 3D version of something. I think that's a large reason of why I've seen so few movies this year, and my Netflix list is waiting for those indies to get to DVD.

I could go to the Landmark Theaters, but since I'm closer to Boulder now, it's quite the drive to downtown Denver.

Watashi

The closest arthouse theater is about 40 minutes away from me and I don't feel like driving that far when the DVD will hit shelves only a few months later.

My theater got I am Love (no interest) and Winter's Bone (will see soon) this week.

It's comments like this and those I've read of yours in other threads that strike me as coming from someone who has formed an opinion on the film in advance of seeing it.I haven't formed an opinion of Inception, though I don't expect very much from it based on Nolan's previous work. In any event, what I meant (in case it wasn't clear) is that the vast majority of wide releases are pretty terrible. In any given year, there are a few outliers (last year we had Fantastic Mr. Fox and Inglourious Basterds, as well as a few I probably missed; I still haven't seen Coraline, for instance), but most are garbage. I think the fanboy hype around Inception has to do with the impression that it's going to be more ambitious than your average blockbuster; something akin to The Matrix or Fight Club, or for that matter, Nolan's earlier Memento--all overrated in my opinion, but certainly superior to the majority of wide releases.

Just to be clear, the majority of independent and experimental (or no release) movies are pretty terrible as well, but we're less likely to see them than blockbusters which are too expensive not to get some kind of distribution, even if they're dreadful and no one wants to see them. On the other hand, this year alone I've seen a number of excellent films in limited release, so when I see people complaining that it hasn't been a good year so far, I can only conclude that they're basing this on what films get big tent-pole releases, which is a bit like saying there are no great novels based on what you can buy at the airport.

Even Cyrus, which seems to be somewhat funny at least. Another reason to hate on 3D, although due to only having two auditoriums capable of showing 3D movies my big local theater did not get Despicable Me in 3D, which is a tad funny to me. This summer hasn't been any worse than last summer, but this year is really disappointing so far.

Well, there's ten. List could change radically if more films I have already seen finally get theatrical releases this year, but I'm betting some of them (e.g. Matsumoto's Symbol, anything Kitano has done recently) have no chance of that.

Yeah, totally. It's pretty average craft-wise (exacerbated by Romero's lowest budget), but it has an enticing story and rich thematic layers.

MacGruber is funny, 30 Days of Light had Bryce Dallas Howard get beheaded and then set on fire, Amy Adams and Matthew Goode make mediocre romcoms watchable, Christopher Nolan is a garbage filmmaker, and Greenberg was Baumbach's first real misfire (I'm not as critical on Margot as everyone else seems to be).

I don't even know what Dogtooth is, but I will look into it.

. Focusing on the incalculably warped products of stringent, goldfish bowl-protective family values, Dogtooth locks us in a pale, closeted dream world where cats are vicious and fatal, plastic airplanes fall from the sky and into the grass to be competed for and then played with, the word “cunt” denotes a large lamp, and sex is a joyless mechanism for controlling, as well as occasionally regenerating, both genders. Moreover, wrangling free of this cruel and unusual cerebral battery requires undergoing an ironically old wives-y rite of fictional passage—when the canine incisors fall from their gums, the kids can leave the nest.
...
To be sure, Dogtooth knows well the coldly observed sadism of Haneke’s director-versus-audience rounds of chess, and the slowly collapsing, self-mutilating clockwork of Von Trier. But the appropriations never feel self-consciously allegorical or exploitative; this grim gut-torking is an anaerobic exercise in psycho-thrill aesthetics with a Repulsion-like good-gone-bad mental dither at its creepily ichor-inflamed core.
Sounds aight, huh?

Actually, this is the film it most closely resembles, so maybe do check it out. It also features a great performance from Birgit Minichmayr of Downfall and Perfume.

I disagree, but it being #1 is the result of the rest of the films on the list being just okay. I did really like it, but it shouldnt be #1 for long, I hope.

Well. I made it to ten. What a pathetic list that is. I mean, anything below the top three has no business being on a "best of" list.

A rewatch of both IMH and TSN proved satisfying, especially the former, which was deliriously hilarious this time around as opposed to "boring and fascinating and reminding me of Norman Mailer’s 60’s films, and finding the ending beautiful." It’s still most of those things, but not so much boring as utterly captivating. I watched it at 3am in the morning though (being intoxicated probably helped a bit too).
