2010 has been rather slow-going for me; the above choices are 2010 films I rated 4 or 5 on Netflix. Really looking forward to catching up with some titles via Netflix, and catching Boonmee, Certified Copy and Enter the Void if/when they trickle into theaters.

By the way, does anyone know if Enter the Void leaked?

Amazon says it's being released in January. I'm skeptical.Yes, but Amazon France (http://www.amazon.fr/Enter-Void-Collector-double-dvd/dp/B0040JUU8Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1289956944&sr=8-1), which caters to the country I mentioned, says December 1st (actually 1 décembre which I take means December 1st in English). So I imagine some upstanding film pirate will have a great quality version available for stealing in just over two weeks on KG. Other sites that are less restrictive on film uploads that don't coincide with its actually release might have it sooner.

I don't love the film or anything, I just haven't seen too many from this year. Here's what I wrote about it March; haven't given it a lot of thought since.

A clichéd and blunt, but effective film on people's blind adherence to some canonized text; I also think there's some subtext underneath about racism- note how Denzel Washington is pretty much the only black person in the film, and in the first half he's frequently treated as 'the Other'. I wish it had ended a bit sooner as Eli dictates the Bible, as the rest feels superfluous. The Hughes Brothers continue to prove themselves masters at visual storytelling and provide a very entertaining and stylish film, only somewhat lacking in content.

I like your write-up. I also haven't seen much from this year, and I didn't love Eli either. But it is one of those movies that I keep going back to and thinking about, just because it tried to say a lot of interesting things in a limited format.

In the end I found it frustrating, and a failure, but goddamn I gotta give it credit if not for pushing the envelope than at least for poking around the edges.

What can I say? At times, I still have a very juvenile sense of humor. The constant arm gags with Crispin Glover eclipsed anything in Inception.

As for your top five, was Bluebeard not deserving, or did you just forget about it? I was going to watch it since it's available on Netflix streaming, but it would be my first Breillat, and I wasn't sure whether it's a good place to start, or whether it was very good to begin with, since you're her biggest champion on here and it wasn't on your list.

I'm not putting anything below ***1/2 into my top 10 list, which is why I only have 5 films right now.

Bluebeard is fine. It's a fairly simple tale told well. It doesn't have many of the extreme elements that Breillat in known for, so, in that respect, it may be a good place to start. It does retain her pet themes of female sexuality and death, usually intertwined. It has been consistently appreciated by various Match Cutters, so yeah, give it a go.

The Last Mistress might be another one you'd like, if I were to guess. Beyond that, it gets a little more dicey.

You should. It seems like something you'd dig.

Just watched Part 1 of Carlos yesterday and it's real good. I'll finish it up in the next day or two and wouldn't be surprised if it ends up in my top 10.

Yes, I most definitely need to watch the three parts of Carlos and Winter's Bone I have on my DVR and watch Everyone Else and Exit Through the Gift Shop off Netflix and Hadewijch on my computer (scandal!). Alamar opens up at the West End on Jan. 7th, so I may force my wife to take me as a birthday present. I keep seeing a 12/31 release date attached to Leigh's Another Year but can't find it actually opening around here that weekend. And I also see Reichardt's Meek's Cutoff ain't coming out until April, so poo on that--though, I guess that's being counted as 2011 for these purposes, so that's good.

My sense of the year, having probably seen a lot less than everyone else, is that it's quite top heavy. A solid proportion of the good stuff actually ended up being pretty good, but that pool seems smaller than in prior years.

I don't know. When I look at my list, I'm impressed by both the variety and the quality. Or at least, obviously, the quality according to my sometimes strange tastes. And it still feels like I'm the only person alive who saw Flipped, a Rob Reiner film for Christ sakes.

By the way, I think Trash Humpers is a hilarious and unforgettable homage to Even Dwarfs Started Small that sees both infancy and old age as approaching anarchy.

Seriously, dude, what's your problem?

Not that I owe you an explanation, but I've been wanting to see them all this time, but I haven't been able to, either because I haven't had them available, I've been out of town on business or because I'm in the middle of moving.

And since I promised a Top Ten 10 to some people who read my blog, I'd like it to be somewhat comprehensive.

Frankly, I'm tired of your almost constant condescending tone.

Therein lies the problem of judging a year of film in December of that year. It's why I'm never satisfied when we do year end lists. It isn't until a solid full year later where I feel confident I haven't missed anything. Still I find that films have snuck by me. Saying that a year is weak when a good chunk of films remain unseen is weird. I know, at this point I'm beating a dead horse.

Definitely. The year a movie comes out shouldn't matter in theory, but when we're posting on forums, there is a huge amount of pressure on remaining topical. That's why I feel like I NEED to watch over 40 2010 films by January 1st; otherwise they wouldn't be topical anymore and thus their worth is diminished. Shouldn't be that way since the whole idea of that is fucking asinine, yet here we are.

But oh so few of those have been available for me to see.

Of course, my post prior to this was mostly a joke, just a quick stab at Scott Pilgrim which I mostly disliked. I've already said that I consider every movie on my list to be strong top 10 quality stuff and I know there are 10-20 more movies out there that will help me end up with a pretty damn solid top 20 at least. I'll finally be seeing Black Swan and True Grit over the next few days, hopefully.

Not the point at all. Any year that is this (quality) auteur-driven can hardly suck at all in theory or logic. I did purposely omit Woody Allen and Nolan and Burton and what-have-you, because these filmmakers have only recurrently revealed their assured sucktude. Sure, that list was made by me so it generally follows my sensibilities rather than Isaacs, so there’s a chance the Godard and the Carpenter won’t be to everyone’s liking, but at the same time there was an attempt for a partially objective (or, to be more precise: canonical/critically acclaimed/auteurist) summation of the year’s directorial offerings (ie: in the method your children will study the said year in 50 years). If it was an entirely instinctively individual system, Nanouk Leopold and Jean-Claude Van Damme would also make the list, and Clint Eastwood would not.

I’d contest “tight direction”, unless that’s analogous with ‘a string of poorly executed jump scares’. Because that’s all it was – a repetitive orchestra of horror elements leaping with jolts, shrieks and thumps, with a scant understanding of timing and mood. Breck Eisner is craft-less. There is no understanding of filmmaking technique anywhere here. His camera is boring. It doesn’t move or position or exist with an inkling of imagination - it is a stupid camera. Also, it’s another occasion where the film look is rendered vile with unsubtle tonally-retarded colour-grading – I wouldn’t call it colour-grading, it’s closer to Magic Bullets preset-selection – watching the Blu-ray was torment. It’s all thorough incompetence for what feels like nothing more than a tedious retread of Escape from New York’s bridge finale stretched into feature length (and lo and behold who they hired for that remake – prepare for... exactly the same thing). As a narrative with plot and character, The Crazies may well be fine and fun and subtextually appealing, maybe, but as a film, a technical collage of images and sound it is down-right offensive – at least for anyone with an appreciation for filmmaking craft.

I have to say, I think I have seen enough films to know it is objectively incorrect to state The Crazies is a poorly-made film. Its craft, that is to say its efficient and quick editing rhythms, its elegant establishing shots, its effective compositions (moving isn't all a camera is good for) which do harbor a good deal of mood, all prove that I feel very confident in outright declaring it is simply a fact that the film is well made.

Really? I thought it was just hummingly pleasant throughout, never outright terrible or transcendent.

The cinematography is wonderful and the performances are all-around quite good. The script made me cringe in how bad it was at times, however.

After some new watches, some rewatches and some thought, here's what probably will by my final list unless I'm suddenly able to find the means to sneak out to the movies in the next couple of days. Lots of re-ordering, as I decided to go back to what I used to do, which is just making my list about how much I enjoyed a film instead of rating it strictly on its craftsmanship. Granted, sometimes the craft of a film HELPED me enjoy it, but that's neither here nor there.

Ha, after submitting that post I realised how pretentious that final line read. But I'm not sorry.Nah, I was just being snarky. I don't have a problem with anyone not liking The Crazies.

And I'm seeing Tron Legacy, finally. Took me long enough. After that, I will hopefully view The Black Swan and The Fighter.

Huh, looking over this list is like "10 Movies I Really Want To See But Haven't Done So (Yet)" for me, even though I didn't actually make it (with the exception of Catfish, which I saw a while back and liked). So well done, and personally quite encouraging.

(I meant to post this the other day, but for whatever reason it seems like it didn't work.)

So, everyone cool for another year-end countdown, with a special guest and bad photoshops and such? I'll start another thread specifically for US releases (and a bottom 10) if you're all down with that idea.

What's our deadline? I have a few movies I want to see before my lame-ass ballot becomes official.

Around mid-Feb, but I'll stretch it for stragglers and POSDT-dwellers like you.

Is there going to be an official thread for us to post our final ballots, or is this the thread to do it? I'll just make up a ballot on the day of the deadline.

Man, I don't think I even watched 10 new films this year. However, two of them that I did see were very awesome, and one of them was one of the most powerful films I've ever seen:

1. A Serbian Film
2. Valhalla Rising
3. True Grit
4. Solomon Kane
5. Dragon Hunters

We've always done a separate thread before, fairly sure Boner said he'd do another one.

Thanks to Netflix, I'm basically caught up on all I wanted to see for 2010 (with Monsters and Centurion still to come, but I'm thinking that neither will have any real shot), so finally here's my top ten of 2010:

1. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: ****
2. Inception: ****
3. Black Swan: ****
4. True Grit: ****
5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I: ****
6. The Social Network: ***1/2
7. The Ghost Writer: ***1/2
8. Toy Story 3: ***1/2
9. How to Train Your Dragon: ***1/2
10. Let Me In: ***1/2

Alternates (films I've just seen, but I'm not sure if they'll stay with me):
The Red Riding Trilogy: ***1/2
Exit Through The Gift Shop: ***1/2
Dogtooth: ***1/2

Worst Films of 2010:
Knight and Day: *1/2
Skyline: *1/2
Hereafter: *1/2
Unstoppable: *1/2
Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief: **
Legion: **
Robin Hood: **
The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time: **
The Wolfman: **
The Last Airbender: **

Most disappointing film of 2010: The Killer Inside Me
