Bah, I forgot to record Angel Face last night.

Laura - 8 (been too long, tho)
Daisy Kenyon - 8.5
Fallen Angel - 9
Where the Sidewalk Ends - 7.5
Anatomy of a Murder - 8

Can easily see him becoming a favorite. One of the masters of camera movement, at the very least.

Yeah, Preminger's consistently great even if I can't say any single of his films is an outright masterpiece on a first viewing. Check out Advise & Consent fo' sho'.

I'll try to get to In Harm's Way before this is over.

*shrug* I barely remember it now, but that's what IMDb told me I rated it. Here's a couple sentences I wrote about it at some point:

Oh, it looks like it's not. I guess we're having director's of the month, though I'm not sure what that's all about.

It's still a consensus. I just haven't gotten to Herzog's results yet.

Where the Sidewalk Ends is just alright. The ending seems to happen too easily in the good guy's favor to me.

I'll need to concentrate on Preminger's camera movement some more as there hasn't been anything that wowed me yet.

Laura - 9
Where the Sidewalk Ends - 5
The Man with the Golden Arm - 7
Anatomy of a Murder - 9

Well...

While maybe not masterful at camera movement, Preminger can certainly frame a shot, and maybe his best example is the one I just saw today in Laura.

Can you give me some examples? Compared to Scorsese, Kubrick, Tarkovsky... I just haven't seen anything yet that has particularly wowed me.

Advise and Consent, Anatomy of a Murder and particularly his masterpiece, Bonjour tristesse all have some awesome camerawork. It's not just the movement though, in the first two he navigates and frames the interiors of the courtroom/Congressional hall so damn well, and in Bonjour tristesse, the whole damn thing is a study in exquisite camera motion. I know there's a great article somewhere online that analyzes a lot of the camerawork in that film.

I don't remember enough about Where the Sidewalk Ends or Laura, but Daisy Kenyon and Fallen Angel contain many, many striking examples. There's one scene on a street in the latter that I had to replay several times when I first saw it. His camera moves aren't as acrobatic and/or flashy as your examples (probably owing to that cameras were harder to move back then), but they're very elegant yet propulsive all the same.

Maybe I just haven't seen the right ones, and it's been years since Anatomy of a Murder, something I really remember liking.

In Laura, one of the best shots in the movie is near the end, when a certain someone is shot, and right in the background, perfectly framed, as if watching it all, is the portrait of laura.

Rosenbaum (http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/the-preminger-enigma/Content?oid=886735) wrote a good article about him and Fred Camper's review of Bonjour Tristesse (http://www.fredcamper.com/Film/Preminger.html) also focuses a lot on Preminger's camera work.

Camper's is the one I was looking for. After three viewings, I had begun to notice a lot of what he winds up talking about and when I read over his thoughts, the whole thing just clicked.

As I mentioned in another thread, I watched Anatomy of a Murder for the first time last night, and I was bowled over by the excellence. Prior to this, I had watched Laura, Daisy Kenyon, and The Human Factor (Preminger's last feature), and I'm pretty sure Anatomy of a Murder is my favourite among these.

I'm a bit surprised to notice such low scores for Bonjour tristesse in here, as I thought it was generally held in very high esteem.
