Unfortunately, this will be the first week where I was unable to find a usable picture of the director.
But rate Hiroshi Inagaki anyways, and see if Derek complains.

Nah, I'll only complain when we waste a week with a mainstream hack whose greatest accomplishment by far is somehow nabbing Helen Mirren. :) Inagaki is, you know, an actual director worth seeking out as opposed to someone we all accidentally saw films by.
Samurai I - 7.5
Samurai II - 6.5
Samurai III - 7.0

I found the incredibly artificial sets and skylines in the Samurai trilogy to be very beautiful.

Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple - 7.5
Samurai III: Duel on Ganryu Island - 7.5
It's been so long, the trilogy just kind of melted together in my brain. I enjoyed them, good but not great, so same rating for all of them I guess.

These low scores for Chushingura are making me sad. I agree that the Samurai Trilogy leaves something to be desired, especially considering it's reputation, but I think Chushingura is immaculate filmmaking.

Martin Campbell's coming up in March!
The opening action sequence in Casino Royale is more impressive than Hackford's entire career, so it's at least a small step up. And I'm sure everyone's interested to see what MatchCut's opinion of The Legend of Zorro is!

Might hit up Incident at Blood Pass for this. Chushingura I've seen most of but unfortunately had to return it before I had a chance to see all of it, so I don't feel comfortable rating it.

Part I seemed very cheap to me. I hear it improves significantly from here on, so I'll probably get to the other ones.

It nearly looked amateur to me. Not just the sets, but the action, editing, everything felt a little off to me. I kept on looking at it in that way instead of feeling involved. Bad critiquing, I know. With that, it showed promise, and based on the ratings here, it does get better with each film.
