I'm trying to get back into the language, so any recs from the Cinema Novo movement? Anyone else I should know beyond de Oliveira?

Thanks.For newer stuff, I've only heard good things about Costa and Monteiro. They're not Cinema Novo, but they're Portuguese.

My favourite portuguese director is the late João César Monteiro, who doesn't seem to be very popular. Still, his films were screened in some major festivals. His trilogy starring the character João de Deus (played by himself) is pretty good, if cryptic. The first film, Recordações da Casa Amarela, is particularly notable. Also, his Holdernin adaptation O Último Mergulho.

And then there's Pedro Costa, although I've only seen one film by him, No Quarto de Vanda, which I recommend fondly.
