Nothing substantial to say, really. It's very much a modern noir, and Affleck is sufficiently unsettling. It plays out pretty casually. There's nothing particularly remarkable about it, especially not on the technical front. The sadism stuff is neat, but a bit undercooked.

Two and a half stars is a tricky rating. I probably could recommend it, because although it's pretty stupid, it's also fast-paced and entertaining. It's harmless and works as in-flight entertainment. I wasn't angry when I finished watching it, but when it comes down to making a choice, I can't bring myself to say, "see this movie!"

I wasn't angry when I finished watching it, but when it comes down to making a choice, I can't bring myself to say, "see this movie!"You're right, it is pretty stupid, though I admired how developed was its anti-American-colonialism-in-the-Middle-East subtext, suggesting that the entire quagmire could have been avoided had those with doubts not succumbed to peer pressure, which is a fine message for a family-geared adventure movie, particularly one produced by Bruckheimer, whose joints tend to lean right-wing. Also, while it's largely a hackwork directorial-wise, I appreciated that its visuals were rarely excessively stylized or glossy, given to a basic craftsmanship that emphasizes the florid art direction, goofy derring-dos, and coherent (if never as exciting or imaginative as the premise promises) action choreography. And performance-wise, Gyllenhaal is fun, never seeming to take the hokum too seriously, Gemma Arterton is appropriately sultry, and Molina is hilarious.

The bizarre energy of the spiritual journey into up-skirt photography was definitely better than the romance and religious cult, but I loved the sprawling nonsense of it all.

Yeah, it's a mild nay from me. I liked some of the acting, and the quest narrative was well executed and an interesting choice for the milieu, contrasting with the usual slice-of-life story you'd expect in such a setting.

I really dislike the mentality that people should only seek out films they know/think they'll like. Is an incredibly closed-minded approach to art and is usually used as an empty insult when someone posts an opinion the other person disagrees with, ie, "I knew you wouldn't like it. Yes and as I said, I'm not saying you should go out and see stuff getting horrible reviews and word of mouth, though we both do it anyway. :) I'm suggesting that you, you know the universal you including me, seek out films that do have support or at least some interesting reviews behind them that may be in a genre or by a filmmaker or addressing a topic or shot in a style that you are typically averse too. IE, I hated Irreversible and there's a good chance I'll hate I Stand Alone and/or Enter the Void, but by watching them, I'll at the very least be exposing myself to a filmmaker that many consider a unique voice in modern film culture and even if I ultimately despise what makes him unique (not saying I am or not just yet), simply that act of exposure has more value, at least to me, than my thumbs upping or thumbs downing the film. I didn't used to like coffee, but after trying it numerous times over the years, I grew to love it. Ones taste in film can expand and grow and limiting yourself only to films that you're almost certain to love seems like a great short term strategy that leads to stagnancy in the long run.

Is an incredibly closed-minded approach to art and is usually used as an empty insult when someone posts an opinion the other person disagrees with, ie, "I knew you wouldn't like it. Why'd you watch it!?" I've probably done it myself in the past, but the world would be a better place if we all agreed to never say it again.I've often tried to do that, but there are a lot of times where I pass on something because I'm broke, or I just don't have the time to spend on it. Still I agree that going outside ones' comfort zone is a good idea. I mean I went to view the
A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, hating it on already because of Michael Bay, and I actually dug it alot. I'm always worried that I'll usually like everything, which is really boring, although a movie has to be utterly terrible for me to hate it.

To be honest there is no standard here. There are films that are being tallied that won't be given a US release date this year (Love Exposure, Film socialisme, Four Lions, Poetry all come to mind). I've just been waiting to see what films get added and then chime in if I've seen it.

No, but I will post some brief thoughts. The film was surprising, I didn't know how close to being a horror film it would be. The film works best because it is a slow burn and then boom! Shocking events. I wouldn't say that Bellocchio really does anything in the film that separates his from his Italian contemporaries. There isn't much style in other words, just a pretty intriguing story that's filmed well enough.

Enhances the first film by polishing up the narrative and making certain elements of it more compelling. The meat of this film however, is uninspired, boring, and thematically pointless.
