Boner, you'd love The Shooting.

Unless you've already seen it and I'm totally wrong.
This one is still pretty obscure, I guess because it hasn't gotten a good DVD release yet. Don't remember it enough to discuss it, but I think highly of it too. And I see Hellman's even more obscure Ride in the Whirlwind is available for Instant Watch on Netflix too now!

I actually went straight to download that one after I finished The Shooting. If you get to it before I do, let me know how it is.

1. Man of the West (Anthony Mann, 1958)
2. His Kind of Woman (John Farrow, 1951)

Of the four Mann films I've seen, this one is definitely my favorite. What a terrific, bleak little film this is. It has some of the most grim, dank skies I've seen in a western; quite apt for the film's troubled, pessimistic outlook. And Gary Cooper's stolidness doesn't seem like constipation for a change.

Yeah, I wasn't all that impressed either. I do love me some Anthony Mann, though. I wish more people would see some of his noir; My two favorite films of his are The Tall Target and Border Incident (Raw Deal and T-Men both worthy efforts also), and his direction in the otherwise mediocre Desperate is fantabulous.

I liked Border Incident a lot, esp. the last 1/3 or so. And Winchester 73 was great. Very very keen to see some of his noirs.

Yes.

His rescue operation in that film is one of the highlights of his career. He completely transforms the film beyond that point.

3. A Letter to Uncle Boonmee

Nice.

How did you see them, by the way? I saw 24 City twice in Toronto (TIFF 08 and again last year at the Cinematheque) and I saw Uncle Boonmee at TIFF last year, but I'm dying to see that one again. They're not available anywhere that I've seen.

24 City got a DVD release last week or so. It is also on Netflix's instant watch which probably means nothing to you since I gather you're Canadian.

Yeah, like soitgoes... said, 24 City is on Netflix Instant Watch. Still Life is one of those "it speaks to me, man" (cue dramatic heart-thumping) movies for me, so when I saw 24 City was available, I jumped on that like a last train to London. Uncle Boonmee is free on The Auteurs. They update their film collection about once a decade, but as long as stuff like Boonmee crops up now and then, I'll gladly pay the monthly fee, even though Boonmee is free whether or not you pay monthly fees.

I haven't checked The Auteurs in a few months. Thanks for the heads up! I'm terribly excited by this news.

And yeah, I'm jealous of your fancy Netflix Instant Watch. I always see my friends using it on Xbox Live and secretly send them hateful thoughts.

Late at night duke. Late at night. I manage my life duties during the day, like normal folk. 30 hour work week with the girlfriend working the same while in school leaves me with plenty of time on my hands late. Normally I watch around 30-40 movies a month, the past two months have been over 50.

That's some interesting time management. I think we can all agree that interesting time management is the road to a fulfilling life.

Yeah, it's great stuff. Forcing one to engage the past, present and future all at once. And the way Frampton analyzed his work as he went along felt very similar to what we do here, which was oddly comforting.:P

The Scent of Green Papaya, Cyclo, and Vertical Ray of the Sun were all superb. I loved the summery, drifting atmosphere in Vertical Ray of the Sun. Have you seen his most recent movie, the apparently ultra-gory thriller I Come with the Rain? It came out two years ago, but I haven't heard anything about it.

EDIT: evidently he has another film coming out this year: http://wildgrounds.com/index.php/2010/01/11/10-stills-from-norwegian-wood/

Have you seen his most recent movie, the apparently ultra-gory thriller I Come with the Rain?

Not yet. It actually did not premiere until June of last year in Japan, and more recently was released in Korea. It was routinely delayed for years, and I don't think it has any Western distribution yet. We have a thread about it here:
http://match-cut.org/showthread.php?p=70508#post705 08

It was uploaded to KG recently, so I'm planning on checking it out once I get around to Scent of Green Papaya (still haven't seen it, shame on me, but the DVD I bought last year turned out to be in the wrong aspect ratio).

So very close to having the cut off be 95 and above. I watched three movies today: Crazy Heart, The Hurt Locker, and Superfly. The first one was merely solid, the second made the list, and the third barely misses the cut.

PS: Moon's thrown in for good measure, as well after last night.

A Time to Live and a Time to Die (Hou 85)
Muddy River (Oguri 81)
A Summer at Grandpa's (Hou 84)

Head-on (Akin 04)

I thought there was a thumbs up emoticon (am I thinking of RT?), but anyways, thumbs up. Love that film.

End of February for me:

1. Duel of the Century (Chor '81)
2. Bright Star (Campion '09)
3. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Gilliam '98)
4. The White Ribbon (Haneke '09)
5. In a Lonely Place (Ray '50)
6. A Serious Man (Coens '09)
7. The Five Venoms (Chang '78)
8. Two Lovers (Gray '08)
9. The Super Inframan (Hua '75)
10. The Hurt Locker (Bigelow '08)

The two Shaw Bros. films were the only new additions (The Five Venoms was from January, I think). Oh, and Hurt Locker. Which was okay, but I'm kinda bored of catching up on 09 releases now after it. My film watching has slowed down a lot again.

After two months, the top ten looks respectable, even if nothing's yet been as surprisingly fluid and wonderful as Kim's classic.

I've never actually had an account on Karagarga, if someone has a invite laying around they wouldn't mind handing out it would be greatly appreciated.

And...
Absolutely beautiful film. The car ride on New Years Eve being the best example of this. I did feel a detachment from the film. I'm not sure if it's that the film kind of meanders or what, but I never emotionally attached to the film. Everything else works, but that one thing keeps the film from being mind-blowingly great.

Ouch. I've been afraid to watch this, but now I'm utterly terrified. As I said in its thread, this is the type of film that some people will love, and this love will leave me wondering "How?" I just can't believe that it took him 8 years to choose his next project, and then he settled on that. I want him to go back to doing intimate portraits of Vietnamese life.

I think I set my hopes to high with Harakiri, I was going in expecting one of the best movies ever. It's a great film though. It was almost "anti-samurai" in a way which is nothing I've ever seen before in a samurai related film. Defiantly amazing, just not one of the best ever for me.
