You're the only other person I know that has seen this. It's probably my favorite Ophuls.
It's really good, isn't it? My first Ophuls, btw. Here's some thoughts I posted elsewhere:
It's a rather simple tale of virtue winning out over vice, set against the backdrop of a backstage music hall. The exploitation of women in show business is illustrated through the tale of a no-nonsense girl (given the stage name, Divine) who has no interest in making a career in show business, despite (or rather because of) the temptations and advances of shady characters. Not really a great film for the ages, but certainly a winner by almost any standard. My first Ophuls and I was slightly surprised by the degree of sophistication he displays in telling this simple story (examples are a couple of cleverly set-up bits of subterfuge that have the viewer expecting the worst, only to have the rug pulled out from under them). Also noteworthy was some really elegant camerwork, especially a rather stunning tracking shot when Divine first arrives at the music hall to look for work. There's also a romance introduced midway that could have easily been a throwaway plot device, but Ophuls infused it with genuine emotion and whimsy, such that it makes the final resolution both deserved and believable. Overall, a very nice jewel of a film.

Nice. Glad you enjoyed it. First Ophuls, eh? You're in for a treat. Without Tomorrow is another underseen gem of his. I'd kill for a decent print of Divine.

I don't think I ever did, but it's right up there with Bright Future and Doppelganger as some of his best work. Few films in the last decade have reflected the state of the world in such a subtle, powerful way as this one.

I don't think I ever did, but it's right up there with Bright Future and Doppelganger as some of his best work. Few films in the last decade have reflected the state of the world in such a subtle, powerful way as this one. I find it his most flawed film, and probably my least favorite of his I've seen ( :) ), but I do think/agree it nevertheless has to be an important benchmark in his work, for the reason you describe. It's a clear and powerful message picture, refreshing in its warmth and genuine hopefulness.

Really need to see more obscured pre-Code classic Hollywood films if they're as raw and inspired as this was.

I hate to update for only one movie, but its a 100 so it makes sense. Also, I'll eventually fashion out the second half of the list to be featured in spoilers.
1. The Long Good Friday(1980)-100
2. Mulholland Dr.(2001)-100
3. Double Indemnity(1944)-100
4. Ed Wood(1994)-100
5. A Serious Man(2009)-100
6. Stop Making Sense(1984)-100
7. In The Loop(2009)-100
8. Wings of Desire(1987)-98
9. Dazed and Confused(1993)-98
10. Donnie Brasco(1997)-98
The cutoff rating is getting even higher. Eventually this list will only feature 100s. Maybe. Either I'm getting rather lazy in my grading or I'm seeing awesome movies. I prefer to think its the latter.

I have to give copious credit to Melville for recommending or letting me borrow a fair chunk of those films and promulgating the supreme awesomeness of Zulawski. In regards to Bresson, I've seen, in addition to what's been posted, Mouchette and Pickpocket, with Balthazar being my favourite of the lot. I've noticed that Bresson, like Tarkovsky, has a certain spiritual perspicaciousness in what to show and what to leave out.
the supreme awesomeness of Zulawski.

I just watched the Patsy! I probably wouldn't rank it among the ten best films i've seen this year, but it is utterly charming. This is my second Marion Davies comedy, and I have to say, she is completely undervalued as a compelling comedienne. Her impressions are dead on, her talents for physical comedy almost unrivalled (at least among women, she ranks among the greats like Lucille Ball and Mabel Normand) and she somehow injects a lot of pathos in her comedy as well. I'm excited to visit more of her work, as well as the rest of Vidor's silent oeuvre. So far he's made three great silents as far as I'm concerned, this, Show People and The Big Parade. I have very high expectations for The Crowd.

Most would be happy to have three films of that quality over their entire careers.
With The Patsy, it had me cracking up from the get go. Davies and her entire "family" were perfect. You're right about her impressions. The best part of the film was when she went from Lillian Gish to Gloria Swanson, even to the point of penciling the dark lock of hair on her forehead. A must see for sure. I just watched Show People, and while still really good, it makes me appreciate The Patsy all the more.

I can think of a few directors who managed 2 brilliant films in a single year, but Vidor might take the prize. I have to agree that The Patsy trumps Show People, but they are both lovely. I want to see more of Davies.

Vidor and Davies got together to make one other comedy, Not So Dumb in 1930. It's interesting that Vidor only made a handful (4?) of comedies over his career, and three quarters of them were with Davies. I guess he knew a good thing when he saw it.
Quality Street, The Fair Co-ed, and The Cardboard Lover are all silent Davies comedies rated over 8.0 on IMDb. Have you seen (or heard anything of) any of them by chance?

I will chime in and agree The Crowd is awesome. I recently re-watched The Big Parade however and have determined it is one of the best films like, ever.
Man, I don't even know anymore. Let's try to do this.
1. 24 City
2. Andrei Rublev
3. A Letter to Uncle Boonmee
4. Nostalghia
5. In the City of Sylvia
6. The White Ribbon
7. Khrustalyov, My Car!
8. The Castle
9. Colloque de chiens
10. The Burmese Harp
Fantasma (Alonso)
Chronicle of a Lonely Child (Favio)
Angel's Egg (Oshii)
Visitor to a Museum (Lopushansky)
La Vie Nouvelle (Grandrieux)
Diabel (Zulawski)
Andrei Rublev (Tarkovsky)
Khrustalyov, My Car! (German)
Chimes at Midnight (Welles)
Manoel on the Island of Marvels (Ruiz)
No idea about the order. None. They're all the best film I've seen all year. I give them a generalized 1st place.

I recently re-watched The Big Parade however and have determined it is one of the best films like, ever.Great for sure, but it'd probably be my second or third favorite Vidor film, vying hard with The Crowd. He's fast becoming one of my favorite directors. More people here need to check him out and silent films in general.
The Dying Swan (1917) ***First Bauer film? I'd probably rate it a touch higher than you. If you're looking to delve deeper into his films, After Death and Daydreams are also good stuff with the latter being my favorite of his.

The Big Parade is one of my very favourite films. Everything about it speaks to my sensibilities. I love the the way he constructs the romance between Gilbert and the French girl and when that is disrupted by war, and we are shown some of the most incredible and terrifying war scenes I've seen committed to screen... well, you know you have a spectacular film. That scene with the soldiers moving forward through the moods as one by one they slowly get picked off... few scenes in cinematic history match that. Though I generally prefer his silents (though I LOVE Stella Dallas and am very fond of The Champ), he also made the transition to sound better than most major filmmakers. Though slightly clunky and a little racist, Hallelujah is probably the most interesting and vibrant sound film pre-1930 I've seen.
I too want to really delve into his work, starting with The Crowd. Others high on the priority list would probably be, Beyond the Forest, Bardelys the Magnificent, Wild Oranges, H.M. Pulsam, Esq. and La Boheme.
Though Vidor is hardly a stock filmmaker, I think him, alongside William A. Wellman are really gaining in favour these days and with reason. Neither really emerged as important figures when auteurists were re-examining the American studio system, though both made many spectacularly vibrant pictures, they are no finally gaining the prestige they deserve.

King Vidor rated out of 10:
The Patsy (1928) - 10
The Crowd (1928) - 9.0
The Big Parade (1925) - 9.0
Hallelujah! (1929) - 8.5
Our Daily Bread (1934) - 8.0
Stella Dallas (1937) - 7.5
Show People (1928) - 7.5
The Champ (1931) - 6.0
Northwest Passage (1940) - 6.0
I have La Boheme, Bardelys the Magnificent and Not So Dumb lined up to see soon. I also want to see The Citadel badly.

I hate to update for only one movie, but its a 100 so it makes sense. Also, I'll eventually fashion out the second half of the list to be featured in spoilers.
1. The Long Good Friday(1980)-100
2. Mulholland Dr.(2001)-100
3. A Clockwork Orange(1971)-100
4. Double Indemnity(1944)-100
5. Ed Wood(1994)-100
6. A Serious Man(2009)-100
7. Stop Making Sense(1984)-100
8. In The Loop(2009)-100
9. Wings of Desire(1987)-98
10. Dazed and Confused(1993)-98
My list from last year and this year's list are incredibly different. There are a lot of movies I've seen this year that would have made the list in 2009, but are being left off this year's list. Interesting.

I want to leave Diva [9] at honorable mention, though I could easily put it at 10. I decided to move The Vanishing down a number of spots because while I still like it a lot, it feels a bit less colossal and monumentally epic compared to the movies above it, but even as the best Hitchcock movie Hitchcock never made, it's still a masterpiece like all of these films. Added Enter the Void and I'm going to give it a spot toward the top of the list just because it's exactly what I want to see when I go to the movies. It's a unique experience in that it is compelling as a narrative as well as (and in a way, because of) its intense visual style. Went ahead and added some ratings also.

It should. At least for a while. I want to see it again, but I was lucky to see it on the big screen in the first place. Really something Criterion/Janus should get a hold of.
As for the list itself, it's starting to seem really arbitrary. I mean, I like all of these movies to varying degrees, but the actual rankings are really kinda difficult (everything on the list is a masterpiece at this point anyway with probably The Passenger being the closest to perfection).

Yeah, I always have trouble with ratings/rankings. I'm probably just going to drop the rankings and keep them as just a group of 10.

Man, I don't even know anymore. Let's try to do this.
Fantasma (Alonso)
Chronicle of a Lonely Child (Favio)
Angel's Egg (Oshii)
Visitor to a Museum (Lopushansky)
La Vie Nouvelle (Grandrieux)
Diabel (Zulawski)
Andrei Rublev (Tarkovsky)
Khrustalyov, My Car! (German)
Chimes at Midnight (Welles)
Manoel on the Island of Marvels (Ruiz)
No idea about the order. None. They're all the best film I've seen all year. I give them a generalized 1st place.
Nice, nice. The Ruiz and Grandrieux are good. You just saw Rublev? Thoughts? Khrustalyov is nice too. Haven't seen the Lopushansky....

Yay, Izzy's back!
Nice, nice. The Ruiz and Grandrieux are good. You just saw Rublev? Thoughts? Khrustalyov is nice too. Haven't seen the Lopushansky....
I've seen three Lopushanskies, and Museum is the only one I really love. Letters from a Dead Man I found oppressive, and not necessarily in a good way. There are good ways of being oppressive, evocatively so, like Tarkovsky's Nostalghia, which was a rather uncomfortable viewing experience, but ultimately rewarding. Letters from a Dead Man obviously intends to be oppressive, due to the subject matter, but what I found most oppressive in it was the flatness, the dullness, the stuffiness, and not the apocalyptic imagery. Nostalghia is also oppressive, and intentionally so, or successfully so, because it's oppressive in the way it seems to want to be oppressive, that is, it's a more poetic kind of oppression, like a million Sunday afternoons stacked one on top of the other, a very deep sort of melancholy, which Tarkovsky says was an almost accidental product of his state of mind at the time, but which I think also has to do with the fortuitous coming together of three parallel exiles: the writer, the composer he's researching, and Tarkovsky himself. It's an exile making a film about an exile who is researching another exile. Alright, so some of them weren't technically exiles, or at least I don't think the writer was, and Tarkovksy didn't know he'd be one while making the film, but what matters is their shared pain of being uprooted from their country or home, which is something I'm personally acquainted with. And so you have three levels of uprooted longing, and these levels of coincidence seem intertwined inside the film to great effect. It's like having three instruments playing the same notes, but their combination makes the sound different than if it were just one instrument playing alone. So I think this is much more interesting oppression than the stuffy library atmosphere I got from Letters from a Dead Man. As for more Lopushansky, I thought The Ugly Swans played a bit like a television movie. But the Lopushansky I love, Museum, it has a special intensity. It makes mistakes Tarkovsky would never make, certain kitsch elements, but it's going for a sort of existential spectacle, a grand nightmare. It works on a very visceral level for me. Andrei Rublev: I oddly don't have as much to say about it. At least right now. It's one of those experiences where I got exactly what I thought I was going to get, a nearly perfect film, Tarkovsky doing an epic. La Vie Nouvelle, by comparison, that came out of nowhere. It was my first Grandrieux and, now having seen his other two movies, and that awful music video, I can't say he surpassed La Vie Nouvelle for me, though Un Lac came really close, and unlike Lopushansky, I more or less love everything Grandrieux did, except for that video. Which means I also liked Sombre. But La Vie Nouvelle. I was prepared for something depressing, but not for Grandrieux's visual experimentation. I realized early on that I was going to be surprised: already in the first scene, we have that effect Grandrieux does, that quivering camera, looking on at the savaged faces. I think that, sort of like Nostalghia, with La Vie Nouvelle I felt like I was stuck in a hermetic universe, as if the whole world were contained in the bubble of the characters' state of mind, so the world in these films is always unreal, somehow intangible, and in La Vie Nouvelle the world is fragile, as if it could shatter, and in Nostalghia the world seems like it could disappear behind a shadow, or collapse into a puddle, into a pool, or dissipate into humid air, so you have that fragility, the same fragility of the characters, reflected in these cinematic worlds that look like they're five seconds away from exploding.

Interesting! I'd like to see this one.

It's one of those experiences where I got exactly what I thought I was going to get, a nearly perfect film, Tarkovsky doing an epic.
It's quite great and still, in my view, his best film. Stalker comes very close, though. There's something ageless about Andrei Rublev. It might benefit from being a period piece. There's also a less cerebral, more emotional exhaustion to it. The exhaustion of Stalker comes across far more cerebral, and I would say much of his later work is in this way as well. There's a visceral element to Andrei Rublev - the restlessness, anxiety, uncertainty, and crisis that conflicts not only its protagonist but others, is almost a matter-of-fact; it's a haunting presence that accompanies the characters as they trek the confusing, tumultuous medieval landscape. There's a more immediate sense of an ontological crisis at this level - perhaps due to the existential problems seeming to exist beyond the personal level and at the social, even though it's primarily captured through the lens of the personal. It benefits from its silence and the expansiveness of its images and cinematic scope.
Of course, all of this sounds awfully familiar and similar to another filmmaker I admire, but what's different here is that the conflict isn't one of alienation, moral bankruptcy, and vacancy. If there's an alienation, it's collective rather than personal; an alienation from something deeper, or from God, but not necessarily from each other (the ending even might suggest that the latter is as all we have); a communal disconnect or identity crisis where the sense of self is lost or uncertain, but a sentiment nonetheless shared by everyone. The advantage, in Tarkovsky's case, of capturing this through images is the effect seems to be more an emotional one than a cognitive one. Despite our lead's self-reflection and searching, there's a sense in which it's never in grasp what exactly is missing from human experience. In contrast to The Seventh Seal, the problem isn't merely evil. It's less defined than that; the observance of pagan rituals, the animalism of man, and the freedom of the will are not captured evaluatively. Rather, there seems to just exist this struggle to reconcile the beauty in life with the ugly (hence the art-themed premise - both as analogy and as a real component), and the seeming inability to ascertain why, or how, these things, and thus life, ought to be understood. In Andrei's particular case, we might say he's never quite able to grasp why God feels absent or distant - he just does.
In contrast, Tarkovsky's later work, whether through expository dialogue or clear behavioral patterns-of-action, his characters seem to know just what is amidst, and in some cases, what needs to be done about it, even if they fall short. This is why Andrei Rublev is quite special, I think. It's despair is more restless and mysterious, expressed by silence and wonder. Stalker, on the hand, is much too forceful, verbose, and expressive in its misery and mystery, and thus, I think, pales a bit in both these categories by comparison.
Grandrieux is important. We need to keep watching him.

Regardless of too many modern movies being included here, I think this list is better than last year's.

Yeah, saw it a few years ago. Liked it a lot, though it gets a bit one note. Still, hard to not like any film where Michel Piccoli dies in a puddle of his own diarrhea.
This Ferreri I really wanna see is Tales of Ordinary Madness. It has a middling rep, but a Bukowski adaptation starring Ben Gazzara as Chinaski!!

I did some reordering. Stalker will probably continue to move, but that's my initial feeling. Jancsó's film is still on the rise. The only thing I am sure of, besides all these films being great, is that Dekalog is hands down the best thing I've seen all year. While the top bunch would probably find there way onto a Top 100, Kieslowski's film is Top 10.

So what you're telling me is, I should prioritize watching some Allan King films?
I've been waiting to see his work for many years and I haven't been let down.
Well, there has been one let down. The image quality of the Dying at Grace DVD is poor -- it's been documented in many reviews -- but this didn't diminish the power of the film. I'll watch the last film in the set today. I couldn't do dying of cancer and alzheimers dimentia without a break in between. I watch the new Blu-ray of Apocalypse Now Redux last night instead.
I do think about A Married Couple a lot. It's so tight and dramatic and perfectly structured that it could be a long lost Albee play. King diverged from the usual Direct Cinema ideas at the time. He'd film in the form's usual fly-on-the-wall approach, trying to be as unobtrusive as possible. But in the editing he'd rearrange freely to build a dramatic structure. The climax of Warrendale was actually one of the first things filmed. There is a case in AMC where the couple have a nasty fight followed by a scene of them sitting at a table having dinner. They seem oddly calm and yet filled with underlying tensions. They're quite like a few couples I've known where fighting was part of daily life like something they needed to keep things going. They could be at each other's throats one minute and head to the bedroom the next. But then I remind myself that these two scenes were probably shot weeks apart and maybe not even in the same order.
The couple were perfectly selected for a film. They are such extroverted, verbally expressive people. They also seem to love being filmed. There's never any doubt that when the cameras turn on they turn on as well. It's like an extreme case of the well known fact that a camera changes the behavior of those being filmed. It turns them into actors.

I just went through the experience of watching both of my wife's parents go through alzheimers. Memory is a very truthful look at eight such characters shot and edited with King's characteristic mastery. It has a sequence that recalls the famous one from Warrendale where the children are told that their cook has died. The similarities of reaction of the kids and these elderly persons is revealing. In its look at the relationships between elderly parents and their adult children, Memory also plays like a companion to Make Way for Tomorrow and Tokyo Story.

The last one was a toss up between Fitz, Annie Hall and Visitor Q and I'm sure I'll change my mind before the end of the year. I suppose I should also thank endingcredits since most of these either came from his direct recommendations or his enthusiasm for the film launching it to the top of my to-watch list, especially his enthusiasm for Zulawski: "Why am I even friends with you guys? You haven't even seen Possession!"

My Zulawski addiction is all Melville's fault. At some point we had a plan to create joint Tarkovsky/Zulawski bandwagon complete with flotillas and parade it through the streets of Match-Cut. Unfortunately, we lacked the drugs to work it out.

Fuck I wanna see Star Spangled to Death.
I really hope you get to see it. I would have liked to have shared some thoughts (I'm still trying to compose some), but really, how does one begin to evaluate a lifetime masterwork, a dyamic, evolving 6 hour and 45 minute film that was almost 50 years in the making (and may yet still be unfinished)? To say that it's a trancendent work of art is a major understatement.

The Clock mmmm. Lovely.Yeah, it's easily my favorite of the three Minnelli-Garland films (although Meet Me in St. Louis and The Pirate are nothing to sneeze at), in part because it's the least Minnelli-esque in that certain scenes have a documentary-like quality.

I loved the performances and the cinematography. Also thought it captured the feeling of disappointment very well, particularly when Townsend never picks up Catherine. The sadness on her face as she walks up the stairs, as well as the ending, floored me.
