I think we should merge the two threads, that baby doll's nee-frightening dismissal of the connection between theme, subtext and form never be forgot.
Also,
The film may not be pro-rape per se, but it's definitely pro-rapist.

I don't know if I can ever settle on a top ten. I thought I had a pretty complete list and posted it to my FB page, but already I'm debating making a change. Anything past the top ten gets pretty random in terms of ranking.

Great stuff, particularly the Deep End mention.I dunno, it seemed to me an entirely unnecessary and forgettable remake of Ophüls' The Reckless Moment (a much better film). Then again, the same filmmakers also made Bee Season (one of the few literary adaptations I approve of), so maybe I'll have to see it again.

Totally with you on The Deep End/The Reckless Moment, though I don't know how to respond to your suggesting that The Bee Season is one of your favorite literary adaptations. I haven't seen it, but that's, well, unexpected.

I haven't seen it, but that's, well, unexpected. When I say it's one of the few literary adaptations I approve of, that's out of the books I've read (which isn't that many). In this case, McGehee and Seigel have a talent for thinking in images, which makes the movie more than an illustration of the novel. One of the interesting changes they make to the story is that, in the book, Juliette Binoche's character was a lawyer but in the movie she's a chemist, and the film connects the image of the kaleidoscope (which is already present in Goldberg's novel) with that of cells merging and dividing under a microscope. Instead of just filming scenes from a novel, they've really translated it into cinema, and I can't think of any other film that does this.

What would be different about it if you simply play Vol 1 & 2 back to back? I hear the black and white would be color the entire time, and you'd simply remove the credits at the end of volume 1. Maybe remove Uma's driving intro at the beginning of 2.
That's about it really. Otherwise it's just one chapter to the next.

He's talked about other things as well. Little things like removing the Klingon quote at the beginning. Bigger things like House of Blue Leaves in a longer, bloodier, and in color version; a longer version of the animated sequence; seeing rather than hearing about what happened to Sophie; and a whole new animated sequence.
Best of all though, it would finally force people to stop referring to Kill Bill as two movies.

There is also the fight between Bill and Michael Jai White's character that needs to be edited back in.
There is actually quite a bit that hasn't been seen and that is different.

Best of all though, it would finally force people to stop referring to Kill Bill as two movies.
But until it's released in a version cut together, it is two movies. Aren't there credits at the end of Part 1?

But the two parts fail completely as standalone movies. They have to be watched back to back to form a complete experience.

So The Lord of the Rings, in your opinion, is one film and not a trilogy?

Kill Bill is two movies. LotR is three movies. Star Wars is 6 movies. Just because the story flows from one film to the next does not mean that it is one film cut into however many pieces.

I would be excited about the prospect of a recut Kill Bill that is truly one united film. However, from all I've read, Tarantino would not take it the direction I would prefer anyway. I think it would be better with less, not more.

it would be. i think he took the split as an excuse to leave some fat in the second half. but i still love it.

I have the understanding that it was split into two because it was too long for The Weinstein Company to release it as one movie.

It's kind of strange though. To me, Kill Bill is two movies that were hacked apart for commercial reasons.
Lord of the Rings feels like one really long movie (probably because it was all shot at the same time) that was divided up the same way the novel was divided up. Tolkein always thought of the story as one novel. Coming up with the three parts was the publisher's idea.
But, and this is the strange part, I consider Star Wars to be six movies. I think, with the possible exception of The Empire Strikes Back, that they all stand well on their own. Plus being filmed so far apart and often by different directors keeps them from feeling unified in terms of style and tone.

I tend to think serials and TV series to be distinct animals from theatrically released films. I mean serials were a common staple all the way through the 50's, some lasting many years. Ivan the Terrible is two films, as are the Langs. They were released as two separate films. Three Colors is the same, only of course three films. Children of Paradise, though realized as two separate films only to sidestep the Vichy government, did premiere as one film.

but is it one film? or four episodes of a television series?I think both would apply. Initially it was released as a series, but then a re-cut version was released as a feature film, same with Scenes from a Marriage. I haven't seen the theatrical cut of either, but I'd imagine enough has been changed to give each a totally different experience.

Oh, that's what you mean. The only way I've seen it was as a single movie, so I guess that's my answer.

This is gonna take some thought. I did a top 20 list of the decade over at REELFocus, but that was explicitly a "favorite" films list - movies I find myself enjoying on a pure "moviewatching" level.
I find that there can be a disconnect between "best" and "favorite" - there are movies I saw once or twice, recognize their greatness, but really don't feel compelled to watch again (I will revisit them, but they're not my first choice for a Saturday afternoon DVD marathon).
Then there are movies that are cheesy as all get out, or just plain "well made" films that I get so much joy from.
I'll see if I can put together a "Best 20" list in the next day or so. I think it will be harder than the Favorite 20.
