Diverse Match Cut Crowd leads to unpredictable 2009 Awards

2009 has mostly been considered a negative year for films. For Match Cut, there is no clear favorite amongst the bunch as opposed to the past few years in which it was quite obvious of who the winner would be.

Thus far, the only movie that has been liked by all groups of Match Cut is Inglorious Basterds, the Quentin Tarantino World War II picture that changes history. A Serious Man is another top contender, but may not have been seen by enough Match Cutters to get the Best Picture vote. Another widely liked, but underseen movie is Claire Denis' 35 Shots of Rum. Spike Jonze's Where The Wild Things Are had a very wide set of opinions, but was loved by quite a few.

Critical favorites like Up, Invictus, Precious: Based on the Book blah blah blah, and An Education have all been disliked by a good amount of Match Cutters. This opens the possibility to movies that came out earlier in the year like Two Lovers, 500 Days of Summer, and In The Loop sneaking in as nominees.

Time will tell if the underseen movies get watched by Match Cutters, as well as upcoming movies like Nine, The Lovely Bones, The Last Station, and Michael Haneke's The White Ribbon

With that... I'll predict the following five:

500 Days of Summer
Inglorious Basterds
A Serious Man
Two Lovers
Where the Wild Things Are

Despite the fact that it is a bit biased, we use US release dates for the awards. Mainly because it is our "Oscars."

Didn't we have secret ballots that we PM'd last time? I like the suspense of that. Or maybe it's fine to just do that with the winners (since nominations can influence what another poster might want to see).

Thanks to this junk, it's good to know our lists won't be too similar (the acting awards, however, look to have some overlap, damnit, I wanna be an original).

Are we counting Hunger as a 2009 release?

We counted it as 2008 and multiple people voted for it last year, although considering it didn't win anything and multiple people have seen it since (as well as it technically not getting its US limited release until March '09), I would be all for counting it again this year.

How do you guys work out questionable distinctions like whether Bad Lieutenant is an adapted/original screenplay or whether Peter Capaldi is a lead/supporting actor and whatnot?

How do you guys work out questionable distinctions like whether Bad Lieutenant is an adapted/original screenplay or whether Peter Capaldi is a lead/supporting actor and whatnot?

I'll defer to the official tabulator(s), but I believe we let you vote for it where you like and then tally all votes in both categories and place it in the one where the most votes fall.

That's how I would recommend it be done anyway.

Can I make a suggestion? Last year, you had only one presenter for all the awards. Most award ceremonies have a different presenter for every award, and that's what Spinal did for the 2007 awards (my favorite post (http://www.match-cut.org/showthread.php?p=40215#post402 15)).

Can we get a judge's (i.e. Boner's) decision on this? Actually, the same goes for The Class, which only had a one-week special engagement in 2008. I think a lot of the best films get the shaft in these awards because few people have seen them in time to vote. Not that it really matters, I guess.

Been kind of a weak year for Actress performances. I'm struggling to force five.

Looking forward to Broken Embraces whenever it comes out.In Hollywood, every year is a weak year for female performances, not to mention every kind of minority performances. I think Manohla Dargis was spot on when she described Hollywood as a bunch of white guys in baseball caps making deals with other white guys in baseball caps.

Sycophant
12-16-2009, 04:53 PM
That was pretty much the arrangement back in the Golden Age of Hollywood, too, but there were lots of astounding female lead performances every year. The system as a whole was also arguably more sexist back then, at least on the surface. Dargis also pointed this out.

Yeah, people say this every year, and they're somewhat right--but a lot of times people just aren't watching the right films. The Hollywood bigwigs that vote on the Oscars may have trouble with their Best Actress ballot, but I never do.

But if we're talking about women behind the camera/script, then, yes, women are always terribly underrepresented.

Looking forward to Broken Embraces whenever it comes out.

I always have trouble with best actress, but I think it's my own fault; I'm just not that interested in girly movies like An Education or The Young Victoria.I can't speak for The Young Victoria (which I want to see about as much as the director's previous film, C.R.A.Z.Y.), but Mulligan's performance in An Education--to say nothing of the film itself--is by far the most overrated in many a moon. The girly movie you should see is Bright Star.

I need to make room for 2012, Antichrist, Precious, and G.I. Joe somewhere.

Been kind of a weak year for Actress performances. I'm struggling to force five.

Looking forward to Broken Embraces whenever it comes out.
i had no trouble coming up with five lead actress performances. for actors i could only come up with four i felt confident nominating. and one of those is borderline (efron).

I guess it depends if we're considering lead and supporting according to screen time or position in the narrative. According to the first metric, Waltz probably has more screen time than anyone, but by the second, he's the antagonist to Shosanna's (and the Basterds') protagonist(s).

I say supporting, but I can see the arguments the other way.

de-prioritize 500 days of summer.Yeah, it's watchable but not essential--about par with An Education, another competent, mildly engaging, wholly conventional movie that feels like a calling card for the director to get a studio gig.

I would prioritize Antichrist, Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea, Silent Light (does this count as an '09 release? I may have to revise my ballot), and You, the Living. And I would deprioritize An Education (you can thank me later), Import/Export, and Le Silence de Lorna.

::sigh::

This is wrong, but I don't blame you because it's very frustrating. Silent Light premiered in NYC at the NYFF in September, yes, but it was September 2007. It then had a week-long run at MoMA in September 2008, which you would think makes it obviously eligible, but apparently it doesn't. It opened on January 7th at the Film Forum, though, and played for a while.

This is all so silly. I know all this because I missed it at the NYFF, then missed it at MoMA, and had to wait until it came to the Film Forum to see it.

Was it part of our awards last year?

Oh, you're right, it played at NYFF in 2007. It even came out on DVD in Canada on September 2nd, 2008. But multiple sites show its commercial US release date as January 7, 2009. I just don't know anymore.

If festival screenings don't count, then it seems like gallery screenings shouldn't either. I don't know. Do any of these rules really make sense? Shouldn't the deciding factor be whether or not most of the voters have had a reasonable opportunity to see the film?

Because I'm pretty sure Reygadas' film didn't have an expensive Oscar campaign, which means no DVD screeners for people in the loop. And besides, I doubt any of the people voting on the Academy Awards would bother to watch a subtitled movie about Mexican Mennonites anyway.

No, my point was that using other awards nominations as a reason why others are wrong for putting someone in the Supporting or Lead category is stupid. As far as I've heard, Harvey is pushing for Melanie Laurent as lead knowing full well she has no legitimate shot at getting a nomination because he's putting all his awards eggs in Nine's basket. So even though Laurent isn't a lead, it's absurd to nominate her in Supporting because Harvey doesn't want her there.

Regardless, Laurent has no chance at an Oscar nomination in either category.

The whole idea of policing this (so-and-so belongs in this category, this film is actually 2008 not 2009) is silly. Through the voting process, the majority will decide who belongs where and what's to be included. If 90% of the people who vote for Laurent see her as the lead, well then she's the lead. It would behoove the 10% who don't, to change their vote in order to support her (unless her performance isn't strong enough to break into the top 5 of that category). With me Capaldi will get moved if the support goes to the supporting category, and there isn't anyone better in the that category.

Adam

If Capaldi isn't nominated, which would be a shame, he should at least be allowed to present the best supporting actor award

I think it makes more sense to just decide beforehand on what's eligible. If it's decided that Hunger isn't eligible, say, then I won't waste a nomination on; and if it's decided that Hunger is eligible, then nobody will have a (legitimate) reason to not nominate it (unless, of course, they think it doesn't deserve a nomination). As for the acting stuff, I'm all for just ditching the supporting actor/actress categories and just having best performance categories; determining whether or not a role is "supporting" seems kind of arbitrary in many cases.

However, the whole idea is silly in the sense that the main benefit of this whole process is the laughs provided by the awards thread.

It was included last year. I have no idea how it could now be a 2009 film according to IMDb. I voted for it last year, and it just seems wrong to do so again. I don't know.

Why? Because he's doesn't play a hyper-masculine man? I believe he's as good as, if not better than, Ms. Cornish.

No, because he's given less to do. I don't think he's required to have the same range of emotion as Cornish, though I could be misremembering.

I haven't seen the first two, but Martel is plainly one of the most exciting filmmakers on the planet right now, and Porumboiu's 12:08 East of Bucharest is the only Romanian film I've seen that I can work up any real enthusiasm over (especially in the second half when it suddenly stops being standard festival bait). And I have seen Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea and Tulpan, so I can say without qualification that they kick major ass all over the place. Nine, sure, that's almost certainly total garbage, but why these films?

Oh, I dunno. Usually what happens is, early on, I hear one or two things I don't like about a film and then I sorta just lose interest. It's not tremendously fair, but I'll more than likely see most of those movies eventually, anyway. More specifically on the films you highlighted: I'm not familiar with Martel or Porumboiu, Tulpan sounded blah and I'm pretty sure I out-and-out dislike Miyazaki

He just goes too preachy and on-the-nose for my taste. I feel like I'm better than his films, basicallyI can sort of see where you're coming from. His environmental messages in his films can come off as being too apparent. I don't think that this is a negative, because after all children do make up a large part of his audience. To dismiss his films as being too preachy is to dismiss just about every animated film ever made. Clouded, hidden messages aren't animation's strong points, and they shouldn't be. A film's morals need to be made readily available for its target audience.

But there is still quite a bit of stuff going on in his films that aren't shoved down our throats. That is why his films appeal to all age groups. The thing that works for me over anything else is his strong use of female characters. In a world, both real and cinematic, saturated with everything male, it is so refreshing to have someone continually make a product with the female in mind. And not just a blubbering, helpless female, but one that is strong and able to figure things out for herself.

I'll ignore the animation part of your post. :)

Ha. What type of questions were those?

And I was just refreshed at the ending in that it didn't free the horse, thereby, freeing herself. I figured that HAD to happen within the first sighting of the horse.

The preview that just came out is so horrible that I don't want to even post it to Match Cut because I fear it'll scare people away.

Hey, I just realized that two of my top five films from 2009 were directed by women. At least as of 1/14/10. What a crazy, mixed-up world this has become
quite the year for female directors. this needs to become the norm.

I was under the impression Fish Tank was not getting a commercial release until this year (actually this month, IIRC). What makes it eligible? We're going by US commercial dates for these awards, right?

The Thom Yorke, Bon Iver & St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear, Lykke Li and Killers songs from New Moon are all incredible. I put in the first two of those in my Best Original Song because it can be argued they were written for it.

Stanley Tucci's role in The Lovely Bones is kind of baffling. He's suppose to be an outdoor man, but doesn't really look it at all, and his mannerisms and awful mustache seem like something out of SNL.

Seems like he just got nominated because it was a role that should've been good, and Stanley Tucci is good in everything. I almost nominated him for Julie & Julia.

I remember the days when Raiders used to defend Up.

What the hell, Phil?

No, you don't. I have always been mixed on it. I defended the short, Partly Cloudy, but I have never been very positive on Up. I think I even admitted in the thread that my initial review was more positive than my reflection on the film.

I made a small edit to mine, though I don't think that's a problem at this point. I hope you haven't tallied mine already.

Actually I'm re-reading the Up thread now. Most of the first reactions were overwhelmingly positive and then it slowly went for the worse once Spinal posted his review. I was vicious in that thread. It was awesome.

I've tallied yours, so I don't know what the differences are.

Nick, Raiders, and K-Fan are all good.

I don't know if vicious would be the right word.

Just be glad that crazy Wats only comes out once a year unlike say... crazy Barty which is every day.

Heh. At this point, Barty is like a cartoon character, and sticks to just one thread.

When will Crazy Wats 2010 appear? We're taking odds.

Can we get crazy Wats to stick to one thread? Preferably one that I don't frequent?

I have no idea, I just started from the beginning and worked my way to the end without looking at the users.

Ballot will be posted tonight.

Match Cut really likes three movies in general, but there'll be some good surprises I think.
