View Full Version : Battle of the Music Videos: (Nominations closed)

Spinal

Oh yes. Oh yes. It's happening.

This thread will pit all of your very favorite music videos against each other in a totally pointless, but hopefully entertaining battle royale! Instrospective indie artists will take on outlandish hair bands! Will you choose your current favorite? Or will nostalgia win the day as you vote with your inner 12-year old?

After a nomination process, the top videos will be placed in a tournament style bracket and face off against each other one-on-one. And then ... votes will be cast, tears will be shed, profanity will be uttered ...

How to nominate a music video:
For these battles, I would like all voters to have the opportunity to quickly watch both videos before casting their vote. Therefore, if you are the first person to nominate a particular video, it must be accompanied by some sort of link where we can watch it. All subsequent nominations for a video that has already been linked can simply occur by listing the title. Again, you only need to provide a link for a first nomination. However, if you think you have a better link for a nominated song, by all means, include it. If you cannot find any such link, the video will NOT be eligible.

The primary focus in your decision making should be the video. You should not simply vote for the best overall song, although the appeal of the music will certainly be a factor. I will ask voters to keep an open mind to new videos they have not previously seen.

All other issues will be resolved by me as we go.

To start with, I will allow 30 nominations from each person, so choose wisely. Ranking will be determined by number of nominations, so yes, it does matter if you mention a video that has already been mentioned. Go ahead whenever you're ready.

Post reserved for my entries (watch for announced additions or alterations):

Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-WVpQ0ZG8Q) (technically a clip from the film Moonwalker, but was directed by a separate individual and is by all accounts given an identity of its own... look at those shapes, check out those moves, one of the best directed videos ever)

The Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws_R_GxZX2o) (there's probably a better quality version out there of this one-of-a-kind actualization of that which we all imagine)

Daft Punk - Around the World (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0HSD_i2DvA) (One of the best things is synchronicity, and here you have a perfect meld of music, dance, film, and narrative... it's enough to make me quiver, and I do)

Morrissey - November Spawned a Monster (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv8LdKp2Y-8) (I just saw this on the big screen. It was... religious. If you can look me square in the whatever and tell me you do not like this, you will force me to question you - let's save ourselves some grief)

NASA - A Volta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3D-SCHiVzc) (Horrifying crime saga played out in nightmarimation... absolutely fascinating)

The Smiths - There Is a Light That Never Goes Out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INgXzChwipY) (Technically the middle part of Derek Jarman's The Queen is Dead, but stands on its own as one of the most evocative and graceful pieces of film ever compiled... the vertical water surface gets me, Morrissey obscured in light, a ghostly car on fire)

Kate Bush - Babooshka (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ot3cVY1JESQ) (chainmail bikini)

Elton John - This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19Jf6znU-r0) (I'm not huge on LaChapelle's party kitsch, but I am huge on one-shot wonders, replete with tableaus and a free-form approach to identifiers)

R. Kelly - Trapped in the Closet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JV_N7i-95Nk) (for whatever reason, people don't like this, but I guess it's their loss, choosing to overlook the ebullient tongue-in-cheeky wit and expert delivery. For whatever reason.)

m83 - Kim & Jessie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9yvItZAjfY) (this video makes me feel like a teenage girl. So there's that. I also like choreography and happiness. It all feels very transient somehow, no?)

UNKLE w/Yorke - Rabbit in Your Headlights (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3ClCwcCvdQ) (amazing, elating use of CG at the end... rarely happens this beautifully)

The Monkees - Goin' Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8D1Dzi_in5s) (with Micky Dolenz's fantastic dance moves and a simmering, slow-burning furor, this is a mesmerizing experience.)

The Chemical Brothers - Galvanize (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmyvpJUljy4) (My God, thank you Antoine! I love how this one sets itself up to be a Justice Stress type gritty docu-truth OMG children sensationalist pieces, but instead turns out to be this awesomely evocative tale of the quest for individuality and strength and is ultimately very cathartic. Adore, adore, adore.)

The Cure - Boys Don't Cry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCVRtzKLslQ) (Another nod to 'toine, who apparently, Sigur Ros aside, has excellent taste. I love the lo-fi, low key creepiness here. Those eyes, the dance, the why...?)

Queen - I Want to Break Free (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hMrY8jysdg) (A very inspiring thing, showcasing Freddie at his most amazing. Hilarious and weird and kinda moving.)

The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back & ABC, performed on Ed Sullivan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSLy9hoXkPM) (Spinal, tell me if this qualifies. I think it should. It is as well directed in demonstrating the appeal of both the songs and the group as any number of things nominated already. Plus, it's too infectious to deny anything. Come on!)

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Otherside (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JDstAVqNz8&fmt=18) (normally I don't spring for the deliberate movie spin-off videos, but this one is different enough in form and content from Caligari that it is worthy, and boy is it good.)

Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dE6Qcc6VDo8) (I like continuous action, and I especially like it when continuous lines span time.)

Depeche Mode - Wrong (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bsXOcK9_Cw) (I like that it takes you a while to figure out. I also like that it is just flat out terrifying.)

Stephen & the Colberts - Charlene (I'm Right Behind You) (http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/59061/february-09-2006/charlene--i-m-right-behind-you-) (Hilarious)

I suppose it is worth asking whether or not sequences from musicals should count. Or, like, concert footage. Or internet features. And stuff.

Ehhhhh ... out-of-the-box entries are ok. But they should be fairly iconic in that case.

Dick in a Box would be ok. The video with Bowie and Bing singing Little Drummer Boy would be ok. If it's concert footage, I'm probably not going to include unless it is a widely accepted classic moment, or if there is some other exceptional quality. But you are free to make an argument.

Above for quoting/nominating, below for my choices:

Blink 182 - "I Miss You" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfaJS-8sijQ&feature=channel) (Amazing video. Goth romance meshed with Soviet montage. Believe it.)

Just now. It's quite nice. I like that the narrative is essentially a sentence long. I also loved the illustrated APP at the end. I think what would keep me from nominating it is, although I like the song and the video, they don't really seem to work together. At least not right away.

It won't be on my ballot, but I thought I'd express how, despite my strongest efforts not to like this, I found myself loving it quite a lot. It gets good in the last half. For sanitized 90s alternative radio pop, I think Matchbox 20 is probably the least offensive.

I have done an inital tally and in order to keep this to a manageable size, I'm going to need to cut off nominations pretty soon. I'm going to go ahead and give you one more day to make any final edits.

From now on, please make any edits to your ballot in a new post. I am not going to go back and look at the nominations prior to this post. Any edits to posts earlier than this one will not be counted.

Thanks.

FINAL BALLOT:

The White Stripes - "Seven Nation Army"
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Michael Jackson - "Thriller"
Nine Inch Nails - "Closer"
Outkast - "Hey Ya!"

Above for quoting/nominating, below for my choices:

Blink 182 - "I Miss You" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYEM68HIm0Y&feature=PlayList&p=5C221F57722860E1&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=19) (Amazing video. Goth romance meshed with Soviet montage. Believe it.)
My Chemical Romance - "The Ghost of You" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OL6QM_mMyA&feature=PlayList&p=B2271AC8C389FE02&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=4) (In a particularly brilliant shot, the ocean's waves and the war takes over the dance floor)
Brand New - "Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKDc2lkt_mE) (A slightly unnerving tale of mimicry and sexuality)
Aphex Twin - "Come to Daddy" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5LCk3ka9G8) (Critique of hive-mind mentality and commercialization meets David Cronenberg)
Tool - "Schism" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhjG47gtMCo) (Tool is fascinated with the human body)
Tool - "Parabol/Parabola" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiV_ue-PbL4) (And that fascination very much continues here, with a brilliant feel for the spiritual)

I have ten slots left. I will try to fill them by 5 pm. I am getting into I-can't-think-of-what-else-to-nominate-but-Gondry-videos territory:

IAM - Je Danse le Mia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J94NYeES68) (More continuation. I love the part in this video starting at 2:23 with the DJ shout outs. So rad.)

Bjork - Hyperballad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGpLMNnhLFo) (I love the suggestion of a digital dreamworld. I like how the video evocatively and creatively captures the concepts in the song. Gondry is good at that.)

Bjork - Declare Independence (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igOWR_-BXJU) (This video is so cool. As I mentioned above, I like it when the video actually addresses what's going on in the song, which feels like a rare thing. Gondry's DIY-ness is in full expression mode right here.)

Bjork has way too many entries in this thing.

Michael Jackson - Rock With You (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/sy-1456297275/michael_jackson_rock_with_you_ official_music_video/) (What's with online videos all featuring advertisements these days? So annoying. Anyway, here, before he got all arty and ambitious with his videos, MJ demonstrates his King of Popitude a little conventionally, but not without panache. Love it. Have watched it who-knows-how-many-times. And that outfit!)

Dethklok - Hatred Copter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce3664OkewA) (I think Brendan Small is a genius and I dig what he's done with Dethklok. The design on these videos kills me. Kinda cool song, too.)

Boo. That song/video is hilarious. Though, since it's "so-bad-it's-good" territory, it doesn't deserve a nom.

Agreed. Though it seems a little myopic that her videos are getting such attention, I think that her work cumulatively has best expressed the potential for music videos as a form. Only Sigur Ros videos interest me in the same way, and they haven't had the longevity of Bjork yet.

Prince - The Halftime Show (http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/category/music/watch/v6330047nSFChkNw) (Again, not sure if this counts, but I think emphasis on performance is just as legit a mode as any kind of cine-stuffs or whatever found in a more "traditional" video. Check out what he does at 2:52. This is the stuff of dreams.)

Naturally, I love this clip. However, I am not going to include it, mainly because it is a medley of songs. It's more like a mini-concert than a music video. I don't want to be too strict about what a music video is or is not, but loosely, I would say that we're looking at visual images that have been crafted in order to enhance the effect of a particular song. You can probably argue that this isn't too different than the Jackson 5 clip I allowed, but that one (due to its length, singular focus, etc.) seems to me a better fit for what we're trying to do here.

I am also going to have to disallow one other clip that I enjoy very much. While I think "Every Sperm is Sacred" is a cherished moment in cinema history, it is not really a music video. Rather it is a musical number from a film. I don't want to open up the floodgates for "Singin' in the Rain" and "Over the Rainbow". So, I'm bumping that one as well.

Happily, there was a pretty clear break at a nice even number. 32 videos received 3 or more nominations. They will be the top-ranked videos in a field of 128. In other words, they not need to win a play-in match-up to be included in the field. They will be seeded as follows:

Martha Quinn Bracket:
#1 Daft Punk – Around the World
#4 Regina Spektor - Us
#3 Radiohead - Just
#2 Jamiriquai – Virtual Insanity

Kurt Loder Bracket:
#1 Bjork – It’s Oh So Quiet
#4 The Prodigy – Smack My Bitch Up
#3 Outkast – Hey Ya
#2 Feist – My Moon My Man

Nina Blackwood Bracket:
#1 Johnny Cash – Hurt
#4 The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army
#3 Blur – Coffee and TV
#2 Fiona Apple – Criminal

Kennedy Bracket:
#1 Michael Jackson – Thriller
#4 The Red Hot Chili Peppers - Otherside
#3 Sigur Ros - Glosoli
#2 The Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight

Mark Goodman Bracket:
#1 Fatboy Slim – Weapon of Choice
#4 Kate Bush – Babooshka
#3 Talking Heads – And She Was
#2 The White Stripes – Fell in Love with a Girl

Alan Hunter Bracket:
#1 A-ha – Take on Me
#4 Jay Z – 99 Problems
#3 The Chemical Brothers – Star Guitar
#2 Feist – 1234

J.J. Jackson Bracket:
#1 Bjork – All is Full of Love
#4 Depeche Mode – Wrong
#3 UNKLE/Thom Yorke – Rabbit in Your Headlights
#2 Kylie Minogue – Come Into My World

Ed Lover Bracket:
#1 Nine Inch Nails – Closer
#4 Weezer – Buddy Holly
#3 Michael Jackson/Janet Jackson - Scream
#2 Radiohead – Karma Police

Please remember that this process involves a lot of arbitrary decisions. Mostly, I have tried to arrange for compelling potential match-ups and make sure two videos by the same artist don't meet up too early. Ultimately, your votes will be the factor that matters most.

This leaves a large group of videos fighting to get the final 96 slots. I'll tell you how we're going to do that shortly.

OK, after thinking it over a bit, here's how I think I'm going to do this ...

There are 229 remaining videos that were nominated. There are 96 slots remaining.

In order to land one of those 96 slots, a video will have to win a three-way play-in battle. In order to make the numbers work out right, I will add various wild card options along the way. These will be drawn from awards lists, best videos lists, my whims and your suggestions. PM me if you think something important has been overlooked. I will add them at my discretion.

I will wait to do the lower seeds until the play-in rounds are complete. This will allow me to become familiar with all the videos and get a sense for your enthusiasm for them. Therefore, if you like something a lot and want to see it seeded favorably, make a comment about it when its match-up comes up.

Four battles will be posted per day. I will get these started later tonight.
