Rififi - 7.5

Solid build-up and deconstruction of the heist film, exploring men's fallibility and weakness with due psychological detail. I like the one detail of the spectator shooting Cesar. However, the very end of the film careens into awkward melodrama as Stéphanois races against time to return Tony to his mother. It's awkwardly scored and contains more cliched drama than even Fuller would posit in a film. Pretty great up until that moment, though.

Riffi - 8

What an excellent heist film, although I did feel the aftermath of the robbery was a bit odd. There either needed to be a little bit more or a little bit less to really focus the themes. I did like the neatness of the plot, although...

stupid woman, why didn't she take the suitcase, too?

I both agree with this part and want to slap you at the same time.

You know what I mean, though. :P Fuller loves piling on layers of melodrama to achieve an affect. Here it feels like Dassin went overboard and felt such a humanistic portrayal from earlier could be augmented by a final take on excess. It doesn't work, whereas Fuller was typically able to integrate such ideas better.

Not that I guess it matters any, but your The Law line should read " - 9 (1)"

You people really ought to get on that one, at least. And I think Topkapi would go over well.

What can I say? Not really that into the noir.

His filmography is actually comprised of relatively little noir. Those're just his big'ns. I think you'd dig Topkapi, for reals. Breezy European whimsical heist caper. Peter Ustinov gives pretty much the best performance ever.

I could see you liking Phaedra or The Rehearsal (they are rare). Not that I've seen either, but given your interest in theater...
