With A Serious Man coming out, I'd thought it would be good to fire up the ole' consensus thread on the greatest contemporary filmmakers.

Rating/ranking the Coens is a tradition over at Icine, heh. And I really must see more, as I've liked everything I've viewed from them so far:
Burn After Reading-9.5
No Country for Old Men-10.0
O Brother Where Art Thou?-9.0
The Big Lebowski-10.0
Fargo-10.0
Blood Simple-10.0
On the 100 scale (last time I checked, anyways) only Fargo and The Big Lebowski get 100's. Blood Simple and No Country for Old Men come close, though.

Perhaps the most consistent U.S. filmmakers out there. I still need to see Hudsucker at some point, but I love their writing style and the way that they use a cast of character actors time and again in new ways (though, at the same time, I'm happy to see them diversify their cast of actors now).
I should make Raising Arizona mandatory yearly viewing...

If I can somehow get down to Montreal in the next week or two, I'll definitely check out A Serious Man. Anyone in South-Central Quebec wanna give me a lift?
Also, I saw Raising Arizona again pretty recently, and it seems more like a Barry Sonnenfeld movie than a Coen brothers film in the sense its the real subject isn't the story so much (which is pretty weak) but Sonnenfeld's symmetrical, Wes Anderson-like compositions, low camera placements, wide angle lenses, and stunt camera movements--all of which are absent in the Coens' films with Roger Deakins.
See and I feel like Raising Arizona is just so quintessentially a Coen brothers film. Maybe moreso than anything else they've done. If Deakins needed to, I'm sure he could handle zany, all-out, fisheye-lensed slapstick, but the Coens haven't really revisited that sort of thing outside of maybe Intolerable Cruelty
Also, I feel like you're kind of dismissing Raising Arizona as this sort of exercise in style more than aything. It seems to me the Coens have never been masters of narrative and actually they kind of poke fun at themselves for that in Burn After Reading. The best of their films have a lot more to recommend than their plots

And while I don't know this for fact or nothing, my guess is that Sonnenfeld and Deakins go through the script and say to the Coens, ''Okay, we can cover it like this, or like this, or like this,'' and that Sonnenfeld's ideas are just a lot zanier. Even in Blood Simple, which is a much darker film, there's that shot moving down the bar with the camera going over the sleeping drunk. It's the kind of shot that's funny in of itself (check out David Bordwell's blog entry on funny framings, in which he quotes Sonnenfeld on his use of wide angle lenses (http://www.davidbordwell.net/blog/?p=761)), which seems to have disappeared from the Coens' work.
Eh, I dunno. You couldn't say Miller's Crossing is conventionally shot, but it doesn't feel anything like Raising Arizona, either, and I don't think it has a lot of shots that are funny just because of the way they're framed or anything. Raising Arizona was shot the way it was because that's the way the Coens envisioned it. Maybe Sonnenfeld brought certain ideas or flourishes to the table, but I think ultimately the Coens made the film they wanted to make

you're ignoring his best 60s film, masculin feminin. It's not one of my favorites. It's obviously an important film in that it marked a decisive turn in Godard's work towards a more journalistic approach to filmmaking, but as an experience, I find it dreadfully slow.

It also has one of the most uncharmismatic leading man performances I've ever seen.Meh, I've never placed an extreme value on acting. Unless its so utterly awful or amazing, I rarely mention it in my reviews.
I just don't like it, aside from finding its visual style interesting.Fair enough.
Now someone not liking Fargo, that I can't really wrap my brain around. Its easily one of the best movies of the 90s.

A duo who are among my favorite directors. I only have 4 left to see from them. Their body of work speaks for itself although I'm not sure if they're misanthropes like some say they are.

Fargo is a top 10 of all time movie for me. I think it's a perfect amalgamation of their comedic and dramatic styles, and the one that most personifies a Coen brothers joint. No Country for Old Men is great too, and the fact that I wouldn't even put it in their own top 10 shows what a ridiculous amount of quality they've produced.

Fargo is near top 10 of all time for me too and I thought NCfOM is just a solid film and nothing spectacular. Blood Simple is my favorite Coen's.

Heh heh, no I don't get the love. I've seen this film many times before. Fargo and Blood Simple are unique.
The struggle in NCfOM is all external - it's just a plain war. The struggles in Fargo and Blood Simple are internal - they're insurrection.
