What up with that? I don't think it was that bad--why the hate?

I'm guessing it's because of the scene in which the pretty young thing holds Rip Torn's penis and whispers 'hi' to it.

Don't remember that scene. As to why, I don't remember my specific criticisms, I just remember hating almost everything about the film. It features all of Roeg's greatest weaknesses as a director. It's simultaneously boring and grating. The performance's are stiff and lifeless. The plot and characterizations are utter tosh, but that's only a quibble because who cares about plot in a film like this. I find it hard to criticize because it's not that the film did certain things wrong, it's that it didn't do anything right.

It seems to be shaping up to be the lowest rated (non-Bay) Criterion film.

Which is absolutely absurd, if you ask me. And you were asking me. Or at least that's what I'm telling myself to justify my posting of this post, which has now gone on far longer than it had any right to. I blame you.

Fair enough.

Edited in Walkabout and Performance. Interesting things to write and think about, but I think he's a bit pervy with all the nakedness.

- Strangely interesting, even if I didn't like Roeg's techniques.

Can you explain? The intercutting rubbed you the wrong way here, or the alienation of the protagonists, or what about the technique?

I don't like at all some of the editing he does towards the end - still the rest of the movie more than makes up for it.
