View Full Version : Most Consistently Great Sketch Comedy Show?

I know that sketch comedy, without exception, is very hit or miss. But what show do you feel got it right the most? For me it really comes down to Kids in the Hall and Mr Show and I think I give the slight edge to Bob and David. They definitely had their fair share of turkeys, but when they were on, they were better than anybody else. You can pretty much bank on at least one stone-cold classic sketch per Mr Show episode and I don't know you can say that about any other sketch show

Can I use this chair? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-ZNX1jqbOk)

For me it's a dead heat between Kids in the Hall and Monty Python's Flying Circus, with Kids in the Hall getting the slight edge.

Monty Python, for me. Still holds up, and each episode has a few moments of true genius. Some are a full half-hour of genius.

Fish-Slapping Dance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhJQp-q1Y1s)

The Bishop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpX3XdU-V9o&feature=fvst)

Lumberjack Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xToPCaNxaow&feature=related)

The Piranha Brothers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ygg2KlicnOQ) (My personal favorite.)

The problem for me with Monty Python is that I grew up on so much comedy that was directly inspired by it. By the time I finally got around to watching actual Python eps, they didn't seem all that fresh or funny to me. It's the same thing I have with like Citizen Kane and On the Waterfront. They're great movies and all but, sorry guys, The Simpsons beat you to the punch. At least in my stupid world

Ugh. One of these days, I'm going to write a paper about The Simpsons Problem.

(I most likely won't, actually, but I'll continue to mean to.)

There are at least twenty stone-cold classic, seminal American films you legitimately never need to see if you just watch like seasons 2 through 7 of The Simpsons

Were The Simpsons a sketch comedy show, I'd...still not agree with you.

But it'd be closer.

Monty Python
Kids in the Hall
Mr. Show
Robot Chicken

One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just does not belong.

Link/point me to some good eps please, because what I've seen was quite poor.

Robot Chicken is actually very, very uneven. When it's on, though, it's extremely funny.

Well, speaking of Citizen Kane, here's one of my favorite kids in the hall bits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3-LxmrFm40)

This sketch about a 13th birthday tradition (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DB4z492z2hg) is one of my personal favorites.

Good 40-second sketch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-EgbhdcSKc).

I can't find Bruce's terrier song, but that's another favorite.

I've never been able to get on Kids in the Hall's wavelength. I've tried a number of times, most recently five minutes ago, when I watched every single linked video and laughed only once (the Einstein reveal).

Don't know what it is.

Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job! is the only answer to this question.

I agree DaMU, I didn't find any of the above funny either. The becoming a man sketch had a good premise but the execution was lacking.

For me:

1. Monty Python
2. SNL Golden Years
3. That Mitchell and Webb Look
4. Chappelle's Show

5. Air Farce
6. This Hour Has 22 Minutes

Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job! is the only answer to this question.

Tim & Eric are just about the complete opposite of "consistently great". Though their highs are non-pareil.

Monty Python's Flying Circus is the only answer to this question.

didn't really think of this as a sketch show, but this would be my answer too

I disagree. I've seen every season multiple times and their have only been a handful of sketches that I didn't care for.

Here's one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkE3BmrJsAw) my wife and I love that's not quite as well-known.

This one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3oDtgBzMJE) is much more popular, but still great (the first sketch, with Bruce's apology).

Compareing sketch shows, really? I thought it was pretty obvious that no group of people, no matter how small, would ever fully agree on what's funny, let alone consistently funny.

I swear, the whole thing's one of my favorite...things...ever.

"Dinsdale was a gentleman, and he knew how to treat a female...impersonator."

"He didn't want to nail my head to the floor. I had to insist. He wanted to let me off."

"Normally Spiny Norman was wont to be about twelve feet from snout to tail, but when Dinsdale was depressed Norman could be anything up to eight hundred yards long."

"We should remember that a murder is only an extroverted suicide."

"As for the performance of Superintendent Harry "Snapper" Organs as Sancho Panza, the audience were bemused by his high-pitched Welsh accent and intimidated by his abusive ad-libs."

"All the kids were like that then, they didn't have their heads stuffed with all this Cartesian dualism."

Saturday Night Live doesn't belong anywhere near a discussion of the most consistent sketch shows, but I just re-watched the third episode of the second season and, man-oh-man, that is one tight hour of sketch comedy. Do yourselves a favor and check it out. Eric Idle hosted and the whole thing has a very Monty Python-esque vibe. I believe it's also the first appearance of The Rutles on the pop cultural landscape

Also, three episodes after that, (the sixth of the second season) The Band laid down my favorite set ever featured on the show. Not worthy of its own thread, but for any other SNL junkies like me, what're your favorite musical performances throughout its run?
