In an argument. We both agree that Mama Thornton's version is about a shiftless boyfriend/husband/whatever, a player as it were. She thinks that the Elvis version is still metaphorical (about a similar woman?) and I say it's been watered down into a sound about a literal hound dog. There's not much evidence in the lyrics themselves, but she wants some kind of proof that my interpretation is valid. I say its all in the connotation and who Thornton was and who Elvis is.
