Despite the list of illustrious directors--as it usually is at the NYFF, since it's programmed by a bunch of erudite festival-leftover snatchers--I have to say I'm a bit underwhelmed. The only film I'm ridiculously excited to see (that won't be released within a month after its screening--which rules out, like, six) is Maren Ade's Everyone Else.

EDIT: Er, and Haneke's The White Ribbon, since it's coming out Christmastime. I'm still a bit disappointed that Xavier Dolan's I Killed My Mother isn't screening, though. That's probably why my gut reaction was moderately discouraged.

Have you seen The Forest for the Trees? Also, it's pretty obvious the interesting movies screening, so I'll refrain from listing the ones I'm interested in since I won't be attending (and no, Precious isn't one of them).

Hmm, on speculation, Telluride should get Antichrist, White Ribbon, and A Prophet since none of those are centerpieces at Toronto, NYC, or Venice. Hmm... Looking good already.

That's probably why my gut reaction was moderately discouraged.Dolan's film is pretty good for a Canadian film, but it's not that impressive. And as far as being underwhelmed by the line-up, you must not read a lot of reviews. Between the new films by Bellocchio, Bong, Breillat, Cissé, Costa, Denis, Dumont, Raya Martin, Porumboiu, Resnais, Rivette, Rodrigues, and Wajda--many of which have gotten rave reviews coming out of Cannes--I'm sure there's one or two films in there that won't be underwhelming. (Conversely, if Ade's previous film is any indication, Everyone Else is shaping up to be this year's Wendy and Lucy.)

No I haven't. But a movie starring Mo'Nique and Mariah Carey (does anybody remember Glitter?) doesn't really scream "Oscar nomination" to me.

Keep in mind there are 10 BP nominations this year. Plus: serious subject matter, minorities being represented, and a probable Oprah show. I'd being willing to bet money at this point it will get a BP nomination. The only thing that could stop it is a serious critical backlash, and like Boner said, that doesn't seem likely with the egghead/highbrow types supporting it.

But that aside, I remember this time last year when reviewers were lamenting the absence of Lucrecia Martel's The Headless Woman from the Toronto film festival's line-up, the reason being something to do with the sales agent. So let's not assume that that programming decisions are exclusively taste-based.

Fair point. I still say that The Hurt Locker is the only movie with a chance of a nomination from movies that have already been released though.

I can guarantee that I will be seeing these, since I'll be viewing them during press previews next week. I'll post my reviews here then.

Beyond these three, however, I have to purchase tickets--which go on sale this Sunday at noon. Therefore, various factors play into the equation, but the main one is: how many of the films I am very eager to see will already be sold out by the time I wake up with a hangover late Sunday afternoon?

I'd prefer Michael K. Williams in a Q&A for that movie. Very interested to hear him talk about his role.

I'm not quite sure who Paul Reubens is from Solondz' early films. Must be some character from Welcome to the Dollhouse.
