New Dardennes film, open limited now, but it deserves a thread sooner or later and I promised baby doll I'd get back to him about this.

I'm going tonight, and I'm unbelievably anxious/excited--the Dardenne bros.' films are...something else.

Let's go over their track record:

The Son: A devastating masterpiece.
La Promesse: A devastating semi-masterpiece.
Rosetta: A devastating semi-masterpiece.
L'enfant: A devastating success.

Nick loves to be devastated.

Well, Lorna's Silence isn't a devastating masterpiece, but it is a compelling spin on the nature of guilt and it also has one of my favorite scenes in any 2009 movie I've watched so far: Lorna dancing with the Russian guy she has to marry. Great stuff

But yeah, I would say that this film could have been better and more devastating. Sometimes, for me, the Dardennes' greatest naturalistic strengths also serve to undercut what they're trying to do. Intellectually, I know I'm watching something very important happen to a character, but often I don't respond to it emotionally. Just a taste thing, though. This is still a good movie

The Dardennes are awesome. When I'm feeling like the I'm at the top of my world, I'll watch this to level me out.
