Thank god it's not a sequel. But I like what I'm reading. However I don't like that Jovovich is playing a "psychologist". It will probably be similar to Tara Reid playing an "anthropologist" in Alone in the Dark

1n 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. This encounter has been the most difficult to document...until now.

Structured unlike any film before it, The Fourth Kind is a provocative thriller set in modern-day Nome, Alaska, where—mysteriously since the 1960s—a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered.

Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented.

Using never-before-seen archival footage that is integrated into the film, The Fourth Kind exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film.

That's some neat timing right there, what with the recent spate of mass sightings that seems to be going on everywhere, right now.

Although personally, I'd like to see a film about the Battle over Los Angeles. Because, damn.

Okay, I'm liking the look of this, a lot. But, couldn't they have found a more convincing way to say 'all of this is based on true events, for real this time' than to have the actress come and say "hi, I'm Milla Jovavich," and etc. That was silly.

The rest of this is very interesting.

I cannot see this movie. I won't be able to sleep for weeks. After watching Fire in the Sky, and then listening to the actual dudes tell their story, I don't think I slept a full night for over a month.

I'm actually more interested in seeing something done with mass-sightings, and all of that. Consider: a fictional narrative taking place within the framework of the sightings at Tenochtitlan in 1990 and through into 2008 with the Chicago O'Hare airport incident, and with a subplot inspired by that weirdly prophetic Art Bell caller from 1997.

Funny to see Will Patton there, because I was getting a serious Mothman Prophecies feeling from that trailer.

I don't understand why it's crazy that Milla Jovovich be a psychologist in a movie. Is it because she's attractive?

No, I think they're saying that she doesn't exude high intelligence.

It's like the difference between Jennifer Connolly and Liv Tyler in the Hulk movies. They're both beautiful women, but I found Connolly much more believable as both a mature love interest, and a brilliant scientist.

It's like you're speaking a different language. I have no idea what happened in any of these incidents.

BW - Art Bell was my main listen back in the mid 90s, though about 2000. I recently downloaded hundreds of his old shows, and started listening to them again. Pretty funny stuff now. Some of it is still really good - especially the episode with Father Malachi Martin - but man, every single prediction given by all of his guests during this time did not come true. Pretty funny. Still really, really entertaining though.

I'll never forget driving through New Mexico in the middle of the night listening to the Victor episode - wow. That was awesome. And yes, we were taking a trip to Roswell.

:)

I'd like to something about the Phoenix lights.

Pretty neat movie. THe original footage are the most interesting parts. They overlay them on the screen at the same time, the original and reenactment. I'm curious whether or not any of the original footage was doctored for the movie. If not... that's totally fucked up.

How would you feel when you find out that all of it's fake to begin with? Despite all the talk at the beginning about how it's based on fact, no dialog changed, etc?

Completely kills the movie that they'd do that.

There is no original footage to doctor. They shot everything. The whole movie is fiction.

As someone who just did a psychology degree I can tell you there were plenty of attractive, not overly bright women in the program. I'm sure they had perfectly good grades and some may go on to become psychologists. If Jovovich were playing the most brilliant neurosurgeon in the world that would be one thing but being a psychologist isn't exactly...

I sort of fell for it. I watched it, and trusted the fact of how serious the opening credits were at how it was "true." However, as the movie progressed, with footage going scratchy at the most convenient of times, I became skeptical.

I walked out of the movie liking it, but skeptical. Looked it up, saw that it was all fake, and now think of it as one of the worst movies of '09.

They could've just done a mockumentary approach and made one hell of a horror movie, or even just focus on Jovovich and make it work. Trying to "base it off events" is the worst thing I've ever heard.

I think the idea is that they saw the Paranormal Activity/Blair Witch model and figured that if you run a dramatization next to that kind of fake "found" footage, the fake footage would look even more believable. Apparently they were right.

Fairly sure they hadn't seen anything of Paranormal Activity yet, but more in the vein of something being "based on" like The Strangers, but having that matched approach.

The fake footage is still pretty effective though. I think it would've worked on its own.

I just want Milla to do a good movie.

It worked though... I definitely got more chills with those scenes than any other parts of the movie.... so... it was effective.

God this movie was BALLS.

The only thing I found even remotely unsettling was the "real" Abigail Taylor. That was some of the best zombie makeup I've ever seen.

To fool people into buying tickets.

These days, anytime I see, "Based on a true story ..." attached to anything remotely horror, I just about kick in my television screen.

I wouldn't say the movie was balls, but it wasn't anything special either. A few good scenes didn't make up for 95 minutes of boredom. Also, I thought it looked sort of obvious that the "real" scenes weren't authentical, but I don't know how I'd react if I hadn't known beforehand.

Although I should mention that I like the decicion not to show the aliens. The owl image worked pretty well. Shame about the ending with the alien experiments, which cheapened the movie a bit for me.
