View Full Version : List-Fu: The Authentic Match Cut Top 100 Animated Films (nominations)

http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n123/lostty_2006/pairqr0.jpg
Okay, none of this newfangled, slapdash community/interactive list nonsense. We're firing up the old List-Fu series to figure out where our little web community stands on the greatest animated films. I'll be allowing shorts. Apparently all of our old list-fu threads were on the old site, so I'm not entirely sure about the rules.
Here's what we'll do, though. This thread is for the round of nominations for what goes on the ballet. Post in this thread up to 50 films that you want to nominate to end up on our top 100 animated films list. Order doesn't matter. If it appears on two or more lists, it'll end up on the ballot (if there's a huge turnout with hundreds of entries, I could end up upping the requirement to 3, but probably won't).
Films from all countries and languages will be considered. The animation can be traditional, 3D, stop-motion, etc.
If you want to avoid influencing strategic nominating, you can PM me your list as well.
I'm going to hold nominations open till next Friday, August 7th, 2009.

(If anyone has any suggestions as to how to moderate this, let me know.)
(I'm planning on doing top 50ish musicals some time after this, probably in September, depending on how this goes.)
(If someone wants to undertake top 100 science fiction, they can go for it, though I'd encourage them to wait until after this one's done--and I'd likewise hold off on musicals till after sci-fi.)
(I didn't do science fiction myself because I couldn't bring myself to care.)
Okay.

I agree with Antoine.

You're probably right. However, the CGI in Transformers was intended to emulate live-action, while Roger Rabbit's clear purpose was to integrate live action with classic animation. As such, I'd lean toward including it with the animated films.

Ok. I'm allowing Roger Rabbit. I think that's the only hybrid I'll allow, unless someone has as good case for another one. I recognize WFRR is still a bit gray, but I'm not going to worry about creating a rule to allow it, but rather think of it as a special excpetion.
Sorry if this devalues this consensus for anyone.

There are way too many great shorts to do the shorts justice in a top 100 animated films thread... so I won't include them... I'll include the longer (albeit not feature) ones from Petrov, Back, Park and Norstein... because I can't bring myself to part with them... so if shorts end up being included then they'll be there. But I really vote no shorts to do both the shorts and features justice!

If I limited myself to features, I would feel my list would be rubbish. It's hardly even a contest for me. Features are so homogenized, and there is so much variety in short films.
Unrelated note: I'm watching Petrov's Old Man and the Sea. His interpretation is a lot more beautiful than Hemingway's novel was (in my mind).

So, tell me about it.
Given that your link takes me to a Japanese vocal track of Petrov's film, these thoughts only concern the visuals, which are nonetheless fully understandable despite language barriers. And the visuals, save for a slightly blocky marlin, are just absolutely sumptuous and breathtaking. The initial dream sequence alone conveys the moral of the short, but once Santiago enters the waters and begins his fight with the marlin, Petrov achieves some truly monumental shots. He cuts frequently to underwater angles (when the sharks swarm the boat) or dives into the depths to reveal the marlin, and these shots possess such grace and artistry that it truly unveils the beauty (however artificially imposed here) of nature. And the music glides right along with each visual, reminding me of Back's animation in its alchemy of visual and music. Just a marvel, considering how little information is needed to comprehend the story.

Oh shit, I didn't realize that was a Japanese site. I did a quick search, and just linked without watching it. An English language version on youtube in two parts can be found here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1EbNvHDxbA) and here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2_KszEnlq0).
There is an amazing fluidity to the art work, and the Back comparison is very much evident.
