We have an awful covers thread and I was surprised not to find its partner around. The main reason I'm looking for one is because I heard this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yrL8PeORjU) today.

("Crazy on You" - The Decemberists)

("Crazy on You" - The Decemberists)

Very unoriginal. Not my bag. I prefer covers that capture the essence of the original while injecting personal style.

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDe60CbIagg) has always been one of my favorites. Weird video.

I could go on and on but I'm partial to "Tower of Song" by the Jesus and Mary Chain (Leonard Cohen cover), "Heartbeat" by Big Black (Wire cover), and "L.O.V.E. Love" by Orange Juice (Al Green cover). I'm a sucker for 80's post-punk, cover or not.

That's a great cover. Love it.

My favorite covers usually come from Mark Kozelek (Sun Kil Moon, Red House Painters). His album of AC/DC covers is a masterpiece (If You Want Blood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QuoHoAi9TQ), Up to My Neck in You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_TBnDGKKnI&feature=related)). If you ever want to hear an artist take a song and make it his own, check this out. Sun Kil Moon's Modest Mouse cover album is also incredible. But my favorite is the Red House Painter's version of The Car's All Mixed Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59ETuvo14is).

And John Frusciante's Song to the Siren (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFmd6OEnUSk) is awesome.

This Mortal Coil's 'Til I Gain Control Again (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deS_Bwk0yf0&feature=PlayList&p=A0648FA7DCE6FB64&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=14), and the brilliant and utterly haunting Late Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TRCUImQ_TA&feature=related) (Syd Barrett).

Probably the best "mostly cover band" around...

:)

Although I like John Frusciante's version of that song the best.

Phish -- The Great Curve (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0CLM0HliNA)

This cover actually got me into the original Talking Heads song. Now I'm starting to like the Talking Heads.

I posted this in the youtube thread but thought I should put this here too as it's the reason why Brittney Spears song Womanizer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMF51dqBJqE) was created.

Oh and I'd like to throw out there that Johnny Cash's cover of "Rusty Cage" is better than Soundgarden's version. He just makes it more badass.

Context: The Opie & Anthony show has this running skit where they interview homeless people for laughs. One time they brought in this dude, interviewed him and had fun asking about his cardboard box home and the voices in his head, yadda yadda unseemly stuff yadda, then they found out the homeless dude knows how to play guitar, but he didn't own one and he hadn't played in a while. They gave him a guitar and told him to play something.

He played and sang this cover of Radiohead's Creep. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXlzci1rKNM)

I believe he starts crying at the 2 minute mark...

I just heard this on The Simpsons yesterday, how random that this thread was bumped. It's great, except the line that they whisper is a glaring misstep. The bridge is beautiful and lends itself perfectly to a choir setting.

I've always seriously loved Television's live cover of Knockin' on heaven's door. Verlaine and Lloyd were seriously awesome guitarists.
