Even as Hollywood studios increasingly aim at the broadest possible audience, a few companies are experimenting with the opposite approach in these summer months and beyond: They're making smart, quirky movies for a sophisticated young audience.
The pics are trying to be the next "Garden State," a 2004 film that, like other hipster pics, can be generally defined as trafficking in moody music, casual style and characters who are disaffected.

The first thing I thought of was Away We Go and sure enough it's mentioned in the article. I didn't see it while I was in Seattle last week though. Too much to do, too little time.

Is it just me? I find it much more insulting to try to make movies for a "sophisticated young audience" than to simply try to make good, funny, and/or exciting movies for everyone.
This whole article reminds me of the Woody Allen dialog:
Alvy Singer: You, you, you're like New York, Jewish, left-wing, liberal, intellectual, Central Park West, Brandeis University, the socialist summer camps and the, the father with the Ben Shahn drawings, right, and the really, y'know, strike-oriented kind of, red diaper, stop me before I make a complete imbecile of myself.
Allison: No, that was wonderful. I love being reduced to a cultural stereotype.

This is an industry article. Industry is about money. Money comes from marketing. This is about marketing. And marketing is about demographics. And there is a demographic that made Garden State and its ilk (target audience, not Cinematic Quality) make money, just like there's a demographic that pays to see Transformers movies on opening weekend. People who control money greenlight specific films in hopes of tapping such demographics.
That's how it's done unless you can get freaking government assistance or some crap like that, which generally isn't done for American Cinema Masters or whatever.
In other words.

Yeah, I know. But it just seems to me that "smart" and "quirky" have been turned into such a crass commodity of late. When I first saw the trailer for Away We Go, I had this weird head rush where everything from American Splendor to Junebug to Garden State passed before my eyes.
There must've been a time when movies were smart and quirky just because that's how they turned out. Now they work too hard to try to achieve it. It's like "My God! If we can't figure out how to cast Alan Arkin as the dad in this thing, we may as well shelve it now."

Look. This was bound to happen once films with an "indie aesthetic" proved profitable and marketable. These films included Wes Anderson films, Brick, Napoleon Dynamite, and whatever non-Burton stuff they make T-shirts for over at Hot Topic.
The blockbuster success of Juno and Little Miss Sunshine solidified it.
And so that "quirky" or "indie" aesthetic has been commoditized. You can actually read me bitching about this back in the Juno thread, but really, I just don't care anymore.

I think what this phenomenon demonstrates is the slow death of true independent American cinema over the last ten years. I feel like Hollywood today is a lot like Hollywood in the forties. It has pretty much taken over the market in the U.S. (whereas in the seventies, great films like Mean Streets and Annie Hall were not produced by Hollywood). There are, today, "low budget" films, but they're still generally produced by major corporations. I wonder if things will ever turn around.

Lord knows I tire of excessive use of irony, but anti-hipster outrage is more annoying to me than hipsterism. It's just young people trying to find themselves and where they fit into this world. When I was in high school, it was typically the mall goth look which was undoubtedly silly, but a lot of those folks grew up to be good people. When you complain about whether or not something is 'authentically punk', you don't sound real, you just sound grumpy and sad. I get it! Putting Che Guevara on a mass-produced T-shirt is a contradiction that only your pure soul can recognize! But bad fashion is not a threat to you and it is not the death of culture. So go masturbate to Nina Blackwood or whatever the fuck you need to do to chill the fuck out.

'Cause you're so fucking above it all, right? I don't think anyone here is saying hipsters are the death of culture. Fact is, though, "hipsterdom"'s bohemian posturing belies incessant image-consciousness, dependence on a social pecking-order, and reliance on the very classist, bourgeois culture it positions itself as a reaction to. It's appallingly hypocritical, and that shit grows tiresome to those of us who have to learn and work with these people, just as excessive irony is tiresome to you.
And I think there was maybe one hipster in my high school. It wasn't until I got to college that I was exposed to this shockingly judgmental, dishonest, and vacuous culture. Let's do coke and watch Jodorowsky films! Yeah, that's fun as long as you don't care about having an earnest conversation about anything.

That said, hey yo, hipsters aren't the worst people in the world. They're obnoxious, immature kids, no worse than your average dumbass fratboy. A lot of my frustration, however, comes from the fact that most hipsters appear to share the same interests as me...until I get to know them and discover how full of shit they are.

No, I just don't believe that the application of an all-encompassing label to people that annoy you is very meaningful. It allows you to be dismissive without making an attempt to understand individuals. I think it's a phony baloney categorization that reveals to me a certain degree of misanthropy in the person who uses it.
