It's kind of an addicting site, but the ranking system doesn't work very well. It's not terribly accurate.

There's also a noticeable dearth of foreign films.

Agreed on both counts. With 5000+ movies there, its tough for the right movies to face each other unless you narrow it down to years, genres, etc.

But it's fun to pass time.

Damn this EVIL, EVIL WEBSITE! I can't stop rating movies and I've already wasted hours of time on it. It's a love/hate relationship. Thanks to Meg for pointing it out to me.

http://www.flickchart.com

Barring some movies that don't appear to be in their database yet (many of Bava's films, the 60s version of The Haunting, Ringu), here's my Top 20 according to Flickchart. I massaged the results as much as their system allowed. The Thing should be at the very top, but they haven't asked me compare it to Life of Brian or Raiders. They have me compare Raiders to EVERYTHING but The Thing. Drives me a batty ... uh ... battier.

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. Monty Python's The Life of Brian
3. John Carpenter's The Thing
4. Dawn of the Dead ('78)
5. Evil Dead 2
6. The Evil Dead
7. Ghostbusters
8. Fight Club
9. The Exorcist
10. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
11. Amélie
12. Videodrome
13. The Godfather
14. Alien
15. Monty Python and The Holy Grail
16. No Country for Old Men
17. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
18. A Christmas Story
19. Shaun of the Dead
20. Die Hard

Really, Flickchart? I have hundreds of other movies on the list, why must you ask me to compare every crapfest with Raiders? Raiders has yet to lose against ANYTHING, why would you think it would lose against TMNT2?

I'm having the same problem. The Seven Samurai has been #1 on my list since I started and while I think it's a fantastic film I doubt it would make my top 50 favorite movies. Yet everytime it comes up they put it up against something like Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian or Austin Powers 3 so it has no chance of dropping.

I doubt it. They just keep providing different movie titles for eternity, or so it seems. Then they'll compare one of your top 20s, with something you wouldn't put in your top 2000. Very rarely have I seen two of my top 20s compared with each other.

That's kinda what I'm talking about. From what I've seen so far, their algorithm needs a lot of work. It should get to a point where it is mostly comparing movies in your top 20 and when it introduces a new movie it should always compare it against number 20 and then allow it to filter up from there. Or something like that.

I keep getting stuff like Zoolander vs Old School which doesn't have any affect on things. Or I get 10 Things I Hate About Her vs The Seven Samurai which also seems pointless.

I did use the remove a movie cheat once. Early on, I rated Borat above something or other and from then on it seemed forever stuck in my top 10.

From what I've seen so far, their algorithm needs a lot of work.

Why is everybody expecting this site to be so much when it hasn't even been out of the gate? Of course it needs work. I'm sure it'll always be a work-in-progress. Hell, Netflix is still perfecting their algorhithm and they've been around for almost a decade.

They say in their FAQ that their database is still unfinished, so this complaint seems a little premature to me.

You'll be waiting for a while. Those cheats I suggested earlier will massage the results without giving you exactly what you want. The site isn't a mind-reader, if you want something specific you'll have to cheat a little.

I'm not really expecting that much. And it is admittedly a fun way to while away some time.

I'm a programmer by profession and am thinking about how it is working and how I think it should be working and what not. Hell, we should put our heads together and come up with a match-cut algorithm and create a rival site. (And I'll make sure that WR is the first movie added to the database. :) )

In other words, I'm not picking on the site. I'm just having fun with it in my own geeky sort of way. And thanks again for helping me get on the site.

I've slowed down my use but it's still fun to mess with for a few minutes a day.

I doubt they see very many people pick Perfume: The Story of a Murderer over Citizen Kane.

Also you would think that when they showed you a movie ten plus times and you haven't picked it once that they would give it a rest. About every twenty posters I get it's either a Star Wars or Indiana Jones film.
