So here is your biggest challenge yet, Match-Cut. Have you seen more films by a guy named Claude than a guy named Monte. It seems likely, so hit 'em up, according to the rules found in the main Consensus thread.

My ratings more or less align with the consensus opinion on each film, so I'd imagine the following would be an adequate primer for the uninitiated (Que la bête meure would probably be the best place to start, followed by Le Boucher or Le Ceremonie).

Les Cousins – 7.5
Le beau serge – 6.5
Les Biches – 6
La Femme Infidele – 8
Que la bête meure – 9
Le Boucher – 9
La Rupture – 8.5
Just Before Nightfall – 8
Wedding in Blood – 7
The Pleasure Party – 6
Cop au vin – 6.5
L’Enfer – 8
Le Ceremonie – 9
The Flower of Evil – 5
A Girl Cut in Two – 5.5

I have no idea why I haven't seen more. I blame my falling out with films.

La femme infidele (1969) 7.0
La boucher (1970) 8.0
L'enfer (1994) 7.5
La ceremonie (1995) 9.0

I feel like baby doll. It seems strangely all of his films I have seen are generally referred to by their French title. Maybe it is just that he's rather obscure and his films have never undergone American conversion.

Yeah, no Hellman, no Chabrol, and looks like I'll be striking out for the next couple of weeks, too, it seems. Just thought I'd explain myself.

See La cérémonie, I think you'd like it! But I need to see more Chabrol myself.

You know, I unconsciously decided I wouldn't try to amend my Chabrollessness because he's got too many pictures under his belt (as opposed to Lucrecia Martel, who's two films I can knock out in one Netflix cycle).

But k, you've convinced me, I'll see La ceremonie now.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm not really sure which of his I should see next. As for Martel, I just picked up La ciénaga today at the library.

A Girl Cut In Two = A Girl Cut Into

Guys I just got this pun. Intentional?Well, I'm sure the original French title La fille coupée en deux doesn't contain any homophones that would make your pun work.

Le Boucher - 8

The film bears the mark of economical filmmaking, with little in the way of flourish of deviation from its barely-there aesthetic. Because of that, at first the film felt static of any kind of cinematic vision. And narratively, it feels almost bewilderingly simple. So much so, in fact, that I'd readied myself for some kind of twist. However, the bit with the elevator at film's end was haunting and wonderfully economical in its filmic technique. Just abstract enough to not be overdetermined, yet simple enough to work as narrative shorthand. Lovely understated coda, too. All told, the last five minutes bumped up the score a full point for me.

At least it didn't get a Meh Boucher. :D

I can understand some of the ambivalence, though. It seems almost perfunctory in terms of narrative itself, and its central lack of any overt visual aesthetic (save for some roaming sustained shots) is initially distressing. That said, the quiet way in which it returns circularly to the opening establishing shots is haunting in its suggestion of how little has changed, even if Helen's bequeathing of a small grace is vital to the film having resonance. I like its understatedness.

Meantime, I don't recommend trying to the French translation of "The Pleasure Party" by googling that phrase.
