This consensus is more barren than... a Monte Hellman film.So Two-Lane Blacktop is par for the course? After reading Rosenbaum's article on Rudy Wurlitzer (the existential countercultural novelist who penned the screenplay) in Essential Cinema, I figured it was all his doing. Hence, while I sort of get what Derek is saying about Bresson (apart from GTO, the characters are as depersonalized as Balthazar the donkey), I kind of agree with Qrazy that there's nothing especially Bressonian about Hellman's découpage.
