Hey, is it possible to get some kind of extension that would allow strikeout text? I've occasionally found the desire to use strikeout text in service of a hilarious joke.
I have determined that my inability to use this feature is one of the ones that makes me take Match Cut too seriously. I think I will be a much sillier and more tolerable poster if I have this option available to me.

Re: Match-Cut.Net
Raiders,
Was thinking about the MCDN project and where it might end up going. I know your initial idea was a database that archives our consensuses and List-Fus and whatnot, but that sounds like it could be quite cumbersome to maintain. What about a wiki? I've seen some video game forums do this where their members collect common and dissenting opinions on games so there's an easy reference to the peculiar tastes of individual members and segments of the community.
Wikis are actually surprisingly easy to set up and maintain, and viewing or editing access can be restricted if it becomes necessary, while not requiring one or two people to assume the whole burden.
Just a thought. Always willing to help out where I can/should.
Love,

Can we get that smiley with the squiggly mouth that we had at the old site? You know, the one that looks sort of disgusted?
EDIT: also, why is it that if I get repped by somebody with over 10 rep power, I only get 10 rep points? It makes sense to have a ceiling on the number of rep points that somebody can give, but then what's the point of the rep power going above 10?

I created a mod to set the max rep power given to 10 but there's no way for me to make it cap the actual "Rep Power" feature at 10. It will continue to increase based on the settings I have created. You just will max out at giving power at 10.

Yes. It has been slower than usual over the past couple weeks.
From what I can figure, the larger the thread, the longer it takes to load. Some stats:
FDT - 46,000 posts, 14 seconds to load
Random Thoughts - 22,000 posts, 13 seconds to load
Video Games - 10,000 posts, 12 seconds to load
NFL - 4,000 posts, 5 seconds to load
The News Thread - 3,000 posts, 3 seconds to load
Now the actual times may vary according to the time of day etc, but the ratio is about the same. The FDT has been particularly annoying over the last 10 days or so.

Don't really want to do that in order to keep the total size down. Unless you are intending to blackmail someone, I would think deleting them after done with them would be fairly easy.

Change Hosts? Servers should be close to 99% up-time, especially for a low traffic internet forum. The fact that we're seeing this happen on a regular basis suggests the host is not very reliable.
Just sayin.

I don't have a server all to myself and am not going to ever get one. And I'm fairly certain that a couple minutes every few days is more than 99%. I am satisfied with the performance on the whole and the price, which I pay by myself, is very nice.

While I would never ever pay for sites like twitter and facebook (even though I'm on them almost daily, if they wanted money I would bail instantly), Match-Cut seems to be entirely funded behind the scenes. I do not like this at all. I feel like this is a small knit community of folks that have known each other for a long time. I love coming here. I am bad at the random donation.

I'm fine with this if this is the community's voice too.
But I just want to point out that 99% up time when compared to 24 hours. The fact that I've posted multiple database errors in this thread suggests its nowhere near 99% up time. I'm only on from 7am-5pm mostly (1/3rd of the day)
And I second Skitch's suggestion of a yearly campaign.
And you don't need to have your own host to get 99% up time. Again I question the quality of the host providing service.

That is 10 hours a day, or 600 minutes. You mean to tell me you notice a DB error or server down error for more than six minutes every single day? I think that is highly unlikely.
I don't mean to get petty, but this site is up 99.5% of the time at least and since moving servers, which I'm sure has had a few initial pains, the site performance has been much better with respect to speed. I honestly think you are complaining about nothing. I appreciate your love of this site, but a couple instances a week for a mere few moments doesn't seem to be an issue, unless everyone feels the way you do. So far, you are the only one who has continually complained.

This is true except when in private messages or your control panel. Forum disappears and the only way back is clicking specifically on the logo. So if we could have forum be added to the part where it says new posts and calendar that would be helpful as well.
But still I would say for the future if it's at all possible clicking on anywhere in the banner would take you back to the main page. That way when someone is making the banner they aren't constrained to having to have the logo in the top left hand corner.

A cap makes reputation largely pointless, and the system only worthwhile for sending mini-PMs to one another. (Personally, I find mini-PMs to be valuable, but only if the ability to give rep isn't capped itself).
number8 has over 7,000 rep. I have ~2000. But as far as these numbers are concerned, we both have the same influence. That makes no sense.

I did it to prevent the inevitable exponential growth of people's total rep (not rep power) due to multiple people giving them 30+points and thus the gradual erosion of any relevance the system really has. The way I had it set, it was gained more through longevity and posting prowess and at some point, it seemed unnecessary to keep increasing. The power is less important than the total rep score anyway.

True. Either way, you get stuck with a different set of problems. Either you cap the system and undercut the overall utility, or you deal with what's essentially "rep inflation" over time.
Still, it seems odd to me that if number8 continues to be popular and I never post again (boo-hoo), we'll still have the same level of influence on other people's scores, ie: there is no erosion there.

If you still have the code, should be easy to just port it, no?

Yeah, I do, but it was fairly simple and not sure if the php file is still the same.

Technically, yes. number8 could employ a responsive design that swaps out stylesheets depending on the size of your viewport (ie, the size of your screen). Doing this is a helluva lot of work though.

He's talking about the browser window size, not his screen. It's really just a matter of setting the forum CSS width to a dynamic value—which it was before until I changed it to a fixed pixel size when I implemented the banner bg—but it's gonna make the header (not to mention image and video embeds) overflow off the postbits and make the page look weird and I'd just prefer the forum look to be uniformed than deal with assigning dynamic CSS values to every one of those unpredictable elements.

I was trying to use layman's terms for 'mango, but you're right -- viewport isn't technically the "screen size" on some platforms.
On mobile, though, for all intents and purposes, it is (because you can't minimize mobile browsers).
You can use CSS @media queries to scale the header image (and change the layout) depending on the size of the user's brower window.
Here's a list of examples:
http://sixrevisions.com/design-showcase-inspiration/responsive-webdesign-examples/
Click through to any one of those sites, then play around with the width of your browser window on the desktop. You'll see that the layout automatically changes to accommodate the new size, and the images all scale appropriately.
Edit to add: Implementing something like this is usually worth it, but it's also a HUGE pain in the rear, because you've got to build, test, and maintain multiple stylesheets for different resolutions.

AFAIK, vB caches the terms of all searches, so that number increments by one anytime anyone does any search at all. If you use the search box or "Advanced Search" and then click "New Posts," you'll see the number increment each time.
Why it feels the need to do this is something of a mystery to me.
Raiders
01-31-2013, 03:18 PM
Yeah, searches are stored as a table in the database, so the searchid field (which is what you see at the end of the URL string) obviously increments as a new record is created. What this tells you is that we have already done 2559 searches. This includes every possible search on the site.
This allows you to archive your search terms, though not sure why you would need to. The parameters of the search file prevent you from seeing other searches though by simply changing the number at the end of the string. It will simply return no results.

For the Top Film's First Seen Thread, is it possible in vBulletin to either put a spoiler tag within a list or start a list at a number above 1?

I like that if I go to my profile page, I can just look at all the posts I've made. It's great because it allows me to just bask in how awesome and witty and interesting I am.

Err, Meg seems to be having a weird thing going on with his account... where his posts delete themselves and his avatar and sig are both deleted. Very weird.

So luckily we have a record of his posts, so they aren't gone forever. I went back and looked and it seems at the moment to only be affecting the posts he's made since the site integration. As I'm not a tech guy I have no idea what's going on but we've gotten an email notification so that's how I found out insanity is happening. Hopefully we'll figure this out asap.

I've had a couple of posts not show up after I submit them. Is anyone else having this problem? Not a big deal, just kind of wondering where they are going?

Something happened over the weekend - for some reason all of the links I have attached to images no longer work. In the music forum, I post pictures of albums with links, and this morning none of the links are there any more. When you click on the image, it just views the image.
I tried adding new links to the images, and they don't work.

I know why that is. It's because all images are now linked to the gallery feature. I'll see if it can't be tweaked to just affect certain images.

Okay, I figured it out. I was hitting the 'Reply to Thread' button when trying to submit a post, which just erases your post, evidently.

I've done this so many times.
Can we bring back the quick reply box?
And
The arrows expanding/contracting the reply box?

What are you guys talking about? The "Reply to Thread" button brings up the Quick Reply box. I am using it for this post.

Yep. I just clicked on 'Reply With Quote', which opens up the quick reply box.

It's confusing and adds one more click instead of the quick reply box just being there like it was in the past.
At least bring back the arrows.

What arrows?
What arrows?
Don't know, but there's a resize arrow in the lower right corner of the quick reply box.

If you click the "Reply to Thread" button after you have typed your text into the reply box, the text is deleted.

Ohhh. Well, yes, it would reset it because it would load the box again.

If it's not too much, could we just straight up bring back all the old smilies? These new ones feel off.

For some reason when I copy and paste something with a comma it automatically adds a second space after the comma instead of only one like in the copy.

I can't for the life of me figure out why, but on my iPad, when clicking to un-spoiler the text, I am redirected to the forum.php home screen.
By the way, this is still happening and it still seems strange to me. Is anyone else who has an iPad having this issue? I am using the full site, not mobile.

I don't have an iPad, but I can't recreate this problem on an iPhone and a Kindle. I also tried using a User Agent to trick Chrome into thinking it's an iPad, and it still works fine. Are you using Safari?

The spoilers work for me on an iPad 2 using Safari & iOS 6.1, but I've had a similar problems on sites like Reddit.
Your browser isn't firing off the JavaScript event that shows and hides spoiler text on a user driven click. Since the spoiler is actually just a link at the HTML level (here, one that's going to "http://matchcut.artboiled.com/#"), the browser treats it as such and delivers the home page.
Fixing this means changing the JavaScript ... annnnnd that's where I stopped investigating. I don't envy number8. Messing with vB Javascript sounds like a severe PITA.
Edit: To stop the browser from delivering another page, the code needs to be changed to dynamically generate the URL of the user's current position on the page. That won't make spoilers work for Raiders, but at least it would no longer forward people to the home page.

Not sure what's going on with this poll. (http://matchcut.artboiled.com/poll.php?pollid=276&do=showresults) It says only one vote but three people have voted on it.
That happened after a thread merge. Three people voted in the original thread, only one in the new thread, and just something went wacky after the merger.

Fixed. Now the image resizer only affects images with no links.
All your album link posts should be back to normal now, D.

My New Release Thread is going to have to wait until I get home from work (sorry was at a funeral yesterday) until I can fix this issue I'm having at work. It's worked fine since the site launch and something happened last week that:
1. Completely disables/hides all of the BBC code buttons in IE8 (left side)
2. Totally freezes MC when I press any of the IMG or VIDEO buttons in Chrome (right side)
Thoughts?
