When we're just saying what our favorite films of the year are, there's no reason to be anal.In that case, going purely by when I saw them, I saw Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino when it opened in Busan. I saw Two Lovers and Billy Wilder's Avanti! in Geneva. In Paris, I saw Adoration a second time. I saw Jean-Luc Godard's Le Mépris and Pablo Larrain's Tony Manero in London. In Toronto, I saw Steven Soderbergh's Che, Laurent Cantet's Entre les murs, Gomorra, caught up with Stephen Daldry's The Reader (which I missed in Busan), and Tulpan. And in Halifax, I saw Hunger (which I watched once before on my computer).

I'm never sure why this is a hard concept to grasp.
IMDb dates for Yearly Consensus = necessary to have some sort of consistency
IMDb dates for Your Top Ten of 2009 = unnecessarily anal because we all live in different parts of the world and things come out at different times
Including films that have been available for anyone to watch all over the world for at least 40 years = kind of missing the point of the initial inquiry

D'Angelo and Sicinski both list in on their '09 releases seen/reviewed' lists, and it's listed on Slant's film schedule (http://www.slantmagazine.com/film/film_preview.asp) as coming out on the 29th of July.

The yearly consensus lists Spinal makes are more official since they go to his website he created so he uses IMDB dates (which generally date movies by their first public premiere) as a standard for all of us that live in different places around the world. Right?

Serbis got a two-week run in NYC (in which time I saw it), then vanished. The Limits of Control has been playing at the same NYC theater for over a month, and still shows frequently throughout the day. This is too bad, of course, since Serbis is (moderately) superior.
Also, trotchky, see, see, see Assayas' new film, Summer Hours. I'm not a big fan of his flashy films, but this one is very austere, emotionally honest, and so casually elegant.

Oh man, California got jipped then. I really wanted to see The Limits of Control again. I'm pretty sure it only got 2, maybe 3, weeks in the greater Los Angeles area and only one in the Bay Area, although I have been known to be wrong. Serbis, I guess, probably got less than that. The only reason it was on my list is because I've only seen 9 films from 2009. But yeah your right definitely not what I was hoping for when I heard about a Kobe documentary. I enjoyed it more as someone who plays basketball and a view into what's going on during the game that we as viewers don't normally see. But as someone who considers Kobe his favorite basketball player I would have much rather seen Spike Lee's talent be used for an actual documentary on his life or career.

Not just a douche, but a whiny douche who cheats on his wife. A real class act. Not to confuse that with him being the best baller in the league though.

The movie really only cares about what he does on court, which I do like. Too bad it really doesn't do anything for the game of basketball. Maybe because they picked a very boring Kobe game.

I'll admit it: I rented it from a Redbox when I was getting groceries out of curiosity and the eye candy (Ginnifer Goodwin is a cutie and of course ScarJo) It's not that bad but it totally exists in Hollywood romcom world where everyone is white and everyone lives in amazingly interior decorated apartments and have jobs where they don't actually do anything but look on their myspaces/cell phones/emails/etc. to see if some dude is contacting them. And this is in "Baltimore" no less. The land of "The Wire."

Actually, no nostalgia, since I haven't seen or read any previous Dragonball stuff. But as bad as Dragonball was, it at least had a kind of goofy sensibility and had some fun little moments, while Race to Witch Mountain really didn't.
Year One will probably actually swap places with Dragonball: Evolution eventually, but Year One's sins are more present in my mind right now.

Not to criticize anyone, but just because you've seen ten movies doesn't mean you have a top ten list. If you don't think the film is worth going out of your way to see, don't put it on your list. Just leave the space blank.
For instance, my top ten of 1981:
1. Modern Romance (Albert Brooks)
2. Diva (Jean-Jacques Bieniex)
3. Lola (Rainer Werner Fassbinder)
4. Raiders of the Lost Ark (Steven Spielberg)
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.
I've seen other movies, some of them good ones (like Rohmer's La Femme de l'aviateur), but they're not on the list.

But seriously, who cares? We're not professional critics; it's a movie forum. Let the people do what they want. It's not a big thing, but seems like people are in a hurry to have ten films, so they can have a list. I think it's better (or at least more useful to the reader, and certainly less ambiguous) to have a list of one or two films that you really like, instead of ten where it's hard to discern how much you liked each one.

That's why I block mine out with a 1-10 rating. I could do a top ten but usually halfway through the year, it's a bit of a stretch.

I blogged (http://chuck-a-luck.blogspot.com/2008/10/piff-day-five.html) about the movie from PIFF, but I don't know if my comments will vindicate the film against charges of amateurism, which strike me as frankly inexplicable. Do you have some axe to grind against high contrast, black-and-white cinematography?

I suppose so to some extent. I love "good" black and white photography, but Tetro and Frontier of Dawn are tinged with a certain look where the movements are too smooth and videoy for lack of a better term. Both films had some decent compositions, but honestly with the capacity of film these days, that's just not enough. The visual aesthetics are probably the least of this films problems though. The sound editing was atrocious, I've seen student films with better sound design. In fact I've probably done better sound work myself. Narratively, it's just about as film school cliché as it gets and aside from Garrel, the acting was pretty poor. The minimal budget is emphasized even more by not actually showing certain pivotal actions (not to the films benefit as in No Country For Old Men). I don't remember enough about the film to be more detailed, I just remember rolling my eyes often and really hating the whole experience. By today's standards it is comparable to 1 out of every 10 films from NYU/USC/yada yada...

By today's standards it looks like 1/10 films from NYU/USC/yada yada...I think this crosses the line between having an opinion and being factually wrong. Admittedly, Garrel's compositions aren't particularly striking, being mostly (if memory serves) medium shots and close-ups--as befitting a more intimate story with little in the way of broader social relevance. However, as in Les Amants réguliers, the textures of William Lubtchansky's images are really beautiful. And there's nothing videoy about the grain of the film; it's the opposite of a smooth, digital image. (I don't remember the sound, but if there was a problem, I would've noticed it; that's one of the things they tell you in film school, that audiences are more sensitive to bad sound recording than bad photography. So you're going to have to tell me precisely what your problem is.) As for not showing certain things, I think I know the scene you mean, and they show it up to a point before iris-ing out, and after that point, what's there to show? Furthermore, you're going to have to explain how the narrative ellipsis in this film are detrimental, while in No Country for Old Men, they make the film better. How are the two films different in this respect?

Furthermore, you're going to have to explain how the narrative ellipsis in this film are detrimental, while in No Country for Old Men, they make the film better. How are the two films different in this respect?
There may have been grain. I didn't mention clarity or resolution. The fluidity of the movements is what I was referring to and it is most likely an issue with shutter speed and the cameras/film used. It may be somewhat of a subtle thing, but noticeable enough for it to bother me. As for the sound, I noticed the room-tone changes on a lot of cuts, it was kind of embarrassing. I suppose dubbing those scenes would have played just as bad though, so whatever. As for the elliptical edits, I thought No Country for Old Men used it to the films advantage to deconstruct typical expectations of a suspenseful thriller, while Garrel uses it in a thrifty Godardian "cut around the violence" kind of way.

Yes, how embarrassing for Garrel.
As for the violence, I think to show her convulsing would have a totally different effect than not showing it, and significantly alter the tone of the film, which is pretty sombre.

I'm sure the he was fine with the shutter speed, it was correct; I just didn't like it. and when room-tone shifts are that apparent it is pretty embarrassing. ;)
The banal plot was more annoying and just as amateurish as the technical aspects.
Violence-wise I was thinking more along the lines of him jumping out the window. I found it ridiculous to begin with, but perhaps would have felt more validated if we got to actually witness it.

I found it ridiculous to begin with, but perhaps would have felt more validated if we got to actually witness it.Okay, maybe his handling of that scene is a little clumsy, but I think he's so good at the emotional stuff, at depicting a level of intimacy between two people in a relationship, that the little technical stuff like room tone changes and certain prosaic plot points don't really matter.

Wow, I'm pretty happy with this list already.I've already made known my feelings on Jerichow (tired noir retread) and Of Time and the City (watchable and sometimes very funny, but disappointing all the same coming from the guy who made Distant Voices, Still Lives and The Neon Bible; basically I'm pulling an Ebert circa Full Metal Jacket). But I've been reluctant to weigh in on Import/Export, which I saw back in January, because I was so torn on it. It's clearly a marked improvement on Dog Days, which I felt became overly repetitive (the characters just do the same things over and over); one of the surprises here is how the young man goes from being totally unsympathetic to a decent human being. And there are some strong images and individual sequences (that Gypsy apartment building is like a scene from hell). But overall, I still felt that there were too many scenes of the same things happening over and over again, and for long stretches it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I'll have to give it another look one of these days, if I can ever bring myself to do it.

Alphabetical order, but Summer Hours is tops. And, of course, I have the personally requisite Bujalski and Dardenne Bros flicks. They both attempted to add "plot" to their films, and it was both a large step forward and a minor step back for them.

It really is pretty great. I loved Mikkelsen (Citron) in this, especially by the end. The juxtaposition of Flame being the cold killer and Citron, the emotional guy who has a problem with killing, and the way they both came to their ends was perfect. Also the Nazi's not being painted as ultra evil really helped blurred the lines between the two sides.
