added District 9Regarding (500) Days of Summer: Really, dude? I saw it yesterday and can barely remember it.

I've already taken my shots at Up and Funny People elsewhere on this forum (in short, the former's prologue could've been a near-great NFB short, but the rest of the film is too predictable; the latter is interesting in a Were-they-really-trying-to-make-a-Hollywood-comedy-about-such-depressing-characters? sort of way, but I could never fully warm up to it).

However, I've yet to crap all over The Brothers Bloom, which is charming and whimsical up to a point, but I never cared about the con man plot because I didn't sense that the characters were in any real danger. It was like the filmmakers didn't know if they wanted to make The Lady Eve or House of Games, and it's stupid to rip-off House of Games anyway, because anyone who's seen it, or one of David Mamet's other films, knows right away that everything is a con within a con within a con. It's more surprising when something real happens.

Hunger's USA limited release was December '08, so I'm exlcuding it.I just checked Mike D'Angelo's website, and you're right: it didn't opened in New York until March this year, but it had an Oscar-qualifying Los Angeles run in December, as did Gamorra.

When you've got 45 minutes to an hour between films I think it's fine. It's when you're rushing out as the end credits begin of one movie to get to the start of the next, that's when it gets exhausting.

The part that bothers me the most is finding time to eat, because the films are at different locations. So basically I'm forced to eat fast food on my way to the other theaters. I'm not a fan of fast food.

It's incredibly exhausting. Luckily, Telluride has some fun people to talk to in lines, and there's usually a good amount of Q&A to see, the city itself, and the gondola rides. Two more weeks!

I also liked Brüno, The Girlfriend Experience, Inglourious Basterds, Liverpool, Lymelife, Revanche, Le Silence de Lorna, Sugar, Three Monkeys, Two Lovers, Up, and Whatever Works.I'm adding Liverpool since it gets a New York release this week, even though when I saw it at PIFF, the overwhelming majority of the audience plainly hated it. I was one of maybe three people who clapped at the end, and for all I know the other two were merely being polite. That said, I'd much rather see this film again than Frozen River, which got mad applause (for Korea anyway) when I saw it the day before.

If a movie doesn't play commercially, even via a limited release in at least one major city, I'll go by the DVD release date. For it to be considered an '07 release, I'd have to go by native country release dates, and to be an '08 release, I'd have to go by festival screenings.

indeed. 2009 turns into yet another lame movie year for me. only two that stand out are caroline and inglourious basterds.

perhaps i shouldn't complain much since it's through my own fault that i miss some of the critically acclaimed like The Hurt Locker, Two Lovers or Drag Me to Hell.

Why not?

According to IMDB it's 2007.

This isn't the "official" voting end of the year list. So I think it fits.

According to IMDB it's 2007.

That's what I figured, but personally I consider something 2009 if that's when it opened for business. It doesn't open here in Bismarck until next weekend. It didn't even open in Seattle until a short time ago. I imagined Munyurangabo isn't really a 2009 either, but I had no way to see it until 2009.

There is a discussion about this on page one, folks. I'll refer to Spinal's post:

IMDb dates for Yearly Consensus = necessary to have some sort of consistency

IMDb dates for Your Top Ten of 2009 = unnecessarily anal because we all live in different parts of the world and things come out at different times

I'm quite behind on viewing for the year, but I'll post a craptastic Top 10 regardless:

1. Up-97
2. Inglourious Basterds-95
3. Partly Cloudy-94
4. Zombieland-91
5. Watchmen-90
6. Star Trek-88
7. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince-88
8. The Hangover-85
9. Observe and Report-81
10. Bruno-80

I'm sure if I re-watched "Report" its rating would go up. Bruno's rating is kind of trending downword in my mind.

Eh. Unless you think there's no way Cohen could do wrong, this isn't worth your time.

Too late. Let's say I was in that camp before seeing some of Indahouse and now Bruno. There's definitely some funny stuff (paranormal blowjob, talking penis, "Straight Dave's Man-Slammin' Maxout") but it never hangs together quite like Borat did. Bruno was by far the least essential or incisive character on the show, and the excessive staginess and extreme similarity in form to Borat makes it seem more like a poorly thought-out cash-in. Still not the worst movie I've seen this year, though.

Yeah, there were a few laughs, but I've forgotten a majority of it and had serious issues with the staginess as well. It felt like a series of gross-out SNL skits. Borat's satire was better and funnier. Seems like they thought Borat was too focused on making a point, so they figured they'd just go all out and do whatever it takes to get a reaction.

This is funny, because I watched about an hour of Bruno yesterday, and I found it not only exceedingly funny, but also very fascinating in its faux-documentary aesthetic. The film constantly dares the viewer to parse fact and fiction, and the effect of its artificiality, and its concept of "gay" is an interesting double-edged sword (both hilariously and offensively inaccurate).

I have not seen Borat, so perhaps I would've been less receptive with that film as a fore-runner.

I'm becoming more and more impressed with this year's offerings with every update.

1. Where The Wild Things Are (Jonze)
2. Moon (Jones)
3. Inglourious Basterds (Tarantino)
4. Up (Docter)
5. A Serious Man (Coen/Coen)
6. Funny People (Apatow)

8. Adventureland (Motolla)
9. Coraline (Selick)
10. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs (Lord/Miller)

It's getting so hard to rank these, and I'm constantly debating which of my top three is really my "favourite film of the year". But I can already see that by the end I'll have a list for myself that's stronger than most years, just one that leaves off a lot of stuff I really love, too.

Four stars for Bad Lieutenant? How does it compare to Ferrera's? I wasn't particularly fond of the original, myself (and I also understand that their only similarities are the title they share). I ask because it's opening Friday in my area, and I may see it, partly because I was under the impression Fantastic Mr. Fox was going wide this weekend, and it's &%$#ing not.

Why didn't you like Black Dynamite, Brightside?

I didn't hate it. I mean, I suppose it's not the worst way to spend an hour and a half, and it'd likely be enhanced by being viewed with friends or in a theater, but I found it got tired really quickly. I think the only time I actually chuckled was when he jumped up from his chair and hit the boom mic. It's funnier in concept than execution, basically. Not enough "I threw that before I walked in the room!" and too much harping on cliches and the genre.

Hmmm, I actually felt it worked best when it was doing more of a straight blaxploitation send-up towards the beginning than when it devolved into more farcical territory around the time they introduced penis shrinking tonic and whatnot. But that line you mentioned (along with the expression on Michael Jai White's face when he says it) IS the funniest moment in the movie and it reminded me of one of my best friends from high school

I actually like BD more from that farcical point onwards, because the first half or so is totally eclipsed by such blaxploitation parodies as I'm Gonna Git You Sucka! and even the brief "Big Jim Slade" segment of Kentucky Fried Movie.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the best thing Haneke has done, and I'm a bit of a Haneke fanboy. Probably the best film I've seen all year, but I'm going to let that one simmer awhile before I commit officially. Beautiful film that is at times difficult to watch, but what Haneke film isn't?

Yes, but I really liked the conflict between the main characters and their overall acting so much that I'll forgive the overlong webcam scenes.

Adoration? I felt like I was watching an after school special on post 9-11 tolerance and the moral conundrums associated with the spread of information and technology.
I felt like I was watching a meditation on the inescapability and ambiguity of history and its pursuant tangled webs of grief; the existential idea of constructing oneself through one's life story (made an especially relevant theme by today's technology and its blogs, video diaries, etc.); the embedding of social concepts of martyrdom, prejudice and otherness, etc., into that history and self-construction; and the mutability and power of these things in a world of instant and widespread information. It was admittedly a bit blunt, but it was so thematically rich that it remained interesting for me.

Egoyan's been analyzing technology and how it impacts society, our lives, psyches and interpersonal relations since 1989.
And most of his movies (that I've seen) are meditations on the inescapability and ambiguity of history and its pursuant tangled webs of grief. (Actually, I thought that was the central subject of the film, rather than the effects of technology.) As others have said, Adoration feels like a very prototypical Egoyan film. It was definitely more blunt (and the themes more awkwardly integrated) than in Egoyan's best work, but comparing it to an after-school special seems absurd.

Yeah, I know. I was furthering your point. The post-9/11 stuff is about terrorism and anti-Muslim prejudice, rather than the effects of technology, but even so, it fits snugly into Egoyan's recurrent set of subjects, rather than being cheaply of-the-moment, and the film deals with it with some nuance (with the exception of the webcam scenes, which were definitely far too obvious in their orchestration), so the comparison to after-school specials seems undeserved.

You make a compelling argument for why you liked it and I respect that, however I still strongly disliked it. Maybe I'm just being a curmudgeon lately, but I don't enjoy films that lecture me about things I'm already completely aware of and immersed in. It all felt really forced and obvious to me, I suppose that's where the after school special comparison comes in, but it's at least a tier above that I suppose. Aside from that I thought it was really dull aesthetically as well, but whatever.

Yep. I had the same reaction to Julia, but really disliked that second hour more.

Ah damn. I'll have to look up when Gomorrah came out. That would make a few of my nominations and my top ten probably.

Avatar placement is temporary. As you may know, The Dark Knight sat pretty highly until I saw it again and realized that I hadn't slept for 44 hours and was high out of my mind. The same circumstances are in effect. I hope not, but kind of.

EDIT: After rewatch, it is comfortably sitting at the #3 position. It's just a smidge worse than Moon on a substantive level, but you can't just totally ignore the technical achievement of the film.
