What does this mean? This was the first I think? Do you only like the book then?

Do you only like the book then?

Yes, I only like the book. We're very intense about it in our family-- it's the first book read aloud to all the children.

In fact, my sister brought it to the hospital yesterday when she was giving birth, and asked my mother to read it aloud to her while she was in labor.

More to keep my sister calm, of course, than to do anything for the baby. We'll probably give the wee one at least a year or two before we expect her to enjoy Milne.

Just to elaborate on a few films, this being a film discussion site and all:

Sleeping Beauty is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. That beauty of animation, the sharp features of Maleficent (what a name!), and the whole storybook presentation showcases just how expressionistic all these movies could have been. While most of them settle for one or two sequences of boundary-pushing ("Pink Elephants on Parade," "Be Prepared"), this is one of the few that feels that joyous all the way through.

Snow White is saved by its dwarfs. Certainly a milestone in the medium (although Prince Achmed precedes it for full-length animation), but what's with the cloyingly sweet heroine and dull-as-wood prince? My God. They have all the interest of Barbie and Ken. Thank God those dwarfs are so impressive. Giving them all individual characteristics was genius; it's easy to tell them apart, and the animators have fun riffing on those one-dimensional portraits. Seeing Grumpy not-so-grumpy at the end? Moving.

Pocahontas now feels like the zenith of 90's political correctness and white guilt that it always was. Maybe it's an apology for all that earlier racism in Disney features.

Don't quite know how to rate these movies... I hate to be that guy (or do I love it?), but I don't think 5s across the board is too harsh. Is there really any real gravitas in those seminal 90s output that I grew up with, watched at regular intervals as a kid, all that shite?

Haven't seen most of these in over a decade:

REALLY LIKE
The Wind in the Willows (the Mr. Toad part of 'Ichabod and Mr. Toad') - 7.5
Lady and the Tramp - 7
Fantasia - 7
Fox and the Hound - 7

LIKE REALLY
Lilo and Stitch - 6.5
101 Dalmations - 6.5
Emperor's New Groove - 6.5

Sleeping Beauty - umm 6.5
Cinderella - umm 6
Snow White - umm 6
(these classical princess fairy tales just don't seem substantial enough)

Beauty and the Beast - 5.5
Little Mermaid - 5
Lion King - 5
Aladdin - 5
Mulan - 5

EMBARRASSING
Pocahontas
Tarzan

See, and these ones that I left out are the one's I'm going to be expecting things from because I actually want to/care to re-watch them: Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi, Great Mouse Detective
