Is this the trailer with the "Be Italian" song? I saw that recently but don't know if this is the same trailer. I liked that trailer ok, sort of a confused Fellini-dreams-about-Sophia-Loren-after-watching-Marshall's-Chicago kind of thing.

Eh...I really don't care, to be honest.
I'm much more interested in 9.
And District 9.
Kate Hudson looks amazing.
You like that Cowboys cheerleader look? Not my thing, really.

Sorry, it was a deliberately sardonic reply. I hope people caught onto that. I just don't know why those films (and only those) had to be automatically compared to this, beyond the similarity in name, and found your post a bit odd. But there is the possibility you were going for something humorous (see the post above mine).
By the way, I think this film will totally trump The Whole Nine Yards.

It's just because I've been saying for months how odd it is that two films are coming out this fall within six weeks of each other, both major releases, both titled Nine (well, one of them is simply the digit 9).
I imagine this will end up causing a lot of confusion in theatres.

Yeah, not convinced. There's some arresting images scattered in there (most involving Penelope Cruz), but I'm thinking its just peerless production design, a way too attractive cast, and Marshall getting to riff off high-flying Fellini.
The stage-set dance numbers look dire.
Is everyone in this supposed to be Italian?

I have to say, the trailer doesn't do it for me at all, but Daniel Day Lewis is such a weak spot, I'll be seeing it. Also, my impression is.. the music itself isn't very strong, this could be hugely dissapointing, though Lewis will no doubt shine.

I feel like he successfully walks a thin line and my concern with this one and Marshall in general is that he will fall over that line.
I do fully expect DDL and perhaps most of the cast to do a good job though.

Didn't much care for Hudson's song.
The real question is where does Daniel Day go from here? How do you do more over the top than a Rob Marshall musical take on a Fellini film? He would literally have to play a chunk of bloody ham in his next movie to keep this thing going

I was actually kinda confused as to why Marshall would put Fergie into something like this until I heard her full rendition of "Be Italian."
Holy hell, that girl's got SKILLS. I honestly had no idea she had that kind of talent.

Just got out of watching this (I'm in the middle of my self-imposed Christmas double feature).
It was depressingly bland.
I had such high hopes, but damn. I've never felt more "meh" toward a movie in my life.
There were some good moments, don't get me wrong. The highlights were Fergie's "Be Italian" number and everything Cotillard did.
DDL actually looked bored during some
scenes. Guess they weren't challenging
enough for him :)
Kidman was in it for all of 10 minutes, Hudson, outside of that horrific song they made her sing, was in it for about 5.
Sophia Loren was barely there. Cruz looked wasted (but admittedly looked great in her dance outfit. She also had the funniest line of the movie).
So, yeah. Meh (not rote) is the word
for this film.

This looks like a Vanity Fair shoot.Yeah, I have no desire to see this, even though Rosenbaum put it on his top ten (http://www.villagevoice.com/filmpoll/view/critics/Jonathan_Rosenbaum/2009) for the year. I think the most revealing thing I've read about the film is that, in the stage version (which I haven't seen but no one's claiming it's a classic), Kate Hudson's character was a reporter for Cahiers du cinéma, but in the film version she's a reporter for Vogue. And that's basically what this movie is, a film for people who read Vogue. Hence, there are plenty of EU citizens in the film (Cotillard, Cruz, Day-Lewis, Dench, Loren), but they're European actors who will be familiar to hayseeds in the midwest. And then there's the whole issue of cultural imperialism, where a Hollywood remake of a Fellini film is supposed to tell Americans everything they need to know about Italy, which makes this Disney version of Italy more interesting to ponder as a subject than it probably is to watch as a film.

Cruz and especially Cotillard deserve a better movie surrounding their performances. Exactly three songs work - "A Call from the Vatican", "Be Italian" and "Take it All" (which is exhilarating). The rest range from forgettable to sleep-inducing, with Hudson's being particularly bad - though it's the song, not her performance. Day-Lewis' performance isn't exactly bad, but he does sound an awful lot like a vampire from time to time. You never really feel like Guido is a genuine person, and it hurts the film.

Yeah, my attention was waning at that point, and that number brought me back in. Musical numbers are so much better when the character is fighting for something.
