Hmm... I'll accept Thriller.

Kentucky Fried Movie - 6.5 (he did this? ha. probably would be funnier back in those times)
Animal House - 7.5
An American Werewolf in London - 9.5
Thriller - 7
Twilight Zone: 7
Coming to America - 7

I can already feel the, "Why this director" criticisms coming.

Already have American Werewolf in London at home, will check out his MoH as well.

I forgot about his segment in the Twilight Zone movie, that's a solid 7 if it counts.

EDIT: But the movie probably gets a 6. This is based on how I remember it, like, seven years ago or so.

Been too long:

Amazon Women on the Moon

I am not going to rate Thriller, much like I am not going to rate Black and White.

I think he's definitely a legit choice. He was a fairly significant and active mainstream director in the 80s.

Trading Places - 6
An American Werewolf in London - 8
The Stupids - 6.5 (this is fun, and Atom Egoyan, Gillo Pontecorvo and David Cronenberg cameo!)

Can't remember a lot of the others.

People really like that movie? I rated it higher than I was going to for the sheer nostalgia of my dad often quoting the "plethora" line. I found it painfully unfunny. It all seemed a bit calculated, or maybe just not goofy enough. Martin is uber-bland, Chase is, well, unfortunately he's Chevy Chase, and Short plays the stright man but the film around him ain't funny enough to make his straight-routine funny. I also can't really tell what the movie is spoofing, if anything, and I really had absolutely no fun watching it.

I find all kinds of good-natured, mostly clean fun. For me the humor comes from the sheer goofiness and the dramatic irony of the plot. I will admit that it's a childhood fav, but my family still quotes regularly and extensively from it, so I believe it has some staying power that makes it very worth while.

Man, I love KFM. It's amazing how much more people could get away with back in those days. It's such a product of its time. The only studio I know of making stuff like that now is Troma - but KFM was actually widely released theatrically. That is amazing.

When you guys are giving "Thriller" a '10' rating, are you comparing it to other films or other music videos? Cause it's going to be silly when it gets a higher rating than The Bicycle Thief.

Exactly. Perhaps you and I should edit our ballots and give it a one to avoid this problem? :P

Looking over what I've seen from him, I didn't realize I liked the guy so much as a director. I'm also trying to decide if Thriller should crack my Top 100 or not, seeing it is could be considered as a short film. Hmmm.

1. Thriller(1983)-10.0
2. Animal House(1978)-9.5
3. An American Werewolf in London(1981)-9.0
4. Blues Brothers(1980)-9.0
5. Trading Places(1983)-8.5; hmm this needs a second viewing
6. Coming to America(1988)-8.5-See above
7. Three Amigos!(1986)-7.0

My local videostore has a couple of his other movies, and I may check those out. Overall, he qualifies as one of my favorite directors, I guess.

Loved the hell out of An American Werewolf in London. So rare (are there others) in which you see horror and comedy done so well without one overshadowing the other.

The wolf at the end is a bit dated, but the other special effects are still amazing.

Great stuff.

I've seen several of his films, and remember being freaked out by the ending of Werewolf when I was younger, but lack sufficient recall to even try to project ratings on these suckas. What a letdown for me.:|

I thought it was fun how every song had "moon" in the lyrics. That was also the first time I every saw Griffin Dunne. Then I loved him in After Hours. Then he disappeared. Whatever happened to him?
