WTF: Jake and the Fatman

Yeah I was wondering if that was a real TV show since it was referenced on Family Guy.

You're welcome. Ted McGinley projects make the world a better place.

For all you youngsters: yes this was a real show, and I remember it being on all the time in yet I never watched a single episode.

Also, Wendy and Lucy. Maybe Ben Button again just to see if I was totally missing something when I found this way mediocre last December.

It was also a frequent MST3K punchline.

Wendy and Lucy was good, but y'all should lower your expectations. It's the sort of social realist downer that the NFB used to turn out in the 1970s (Goin' Down the Road being the most obvious example).

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was intriguing but not really successful, and also weirdly conservative in spots (A woman who reads D.H. Lawrence! Feel threatened, male viewers, for your patriarchal grip on women's bodies is being challenged! Challenged, I say!), in addition to, you know, dealing with Hurricane Katrina almost as inadequately as FEMA. (Who cares about those real people who actually died or lost their homes in the storm? Brad Pitt only has so many years to screw around with Cate Blanchett--what a tragedy!)

Meet Me in St. Louis and Singin' in the Rain are great. The Band Wagon and Easter Parade not so much.

I've been meaning to take another look at Saturday Night Fever since watching Tony Manero.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a Criterion release? When I saw it in theaters I walked out halfway through due to boredom but I guess I might give it another shot.

That's kind of odd logic.

Don't bother. It's good, but doesn't merit sitting through twice considering its near 166-minute running time. Criterion is only releasing it for the money. Fincher has done way better.

That's true of a lot of movies, though, and there's anything wrong with it. Large catastrophes told through the perspective of the individual loss of the protagonists. You just feel that way because Hurricane Katrina is more recent than the Titanic or the Civil War.

Saturday Night Fever is a great, great, great film. I'd like to check out Tony Manero.

You just feel that way because Hurricane Katrina is more recent than the Titanic or the Civil War.I haven't seen Titanic, but from what I've heard, the film shows the boating sinking. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ends just after the Levees break. And even before that, the story exists in a New Orleans free of racism. This doesn't necessarily make it a bad film (the meandering, undramatic narrative makes it an unsuccessful one), but you can't say it's a very grown up one.

The way you use adjectives is kind of weird.

The way you use adjectives is kind of weird. And yet, I somehow got a job as an English teacher. (Then again, one of my co-workers who was also a native speaker didn't know that "edifice" was a word.)

The entire portion of Blanchett in the hospital is unnecessary to me, and just made the movie take longer.

Additional scenes will do that regardless of their being necessary or not, you know. ;)

Good catch. But really, I see no point in having them there, except it forced a narrator on us.

I agree, it was a horrible framing device.
