I hope it has an alternate ending as epic as Titanic's.

I've been reading through this thread, and I just want to say, I love this post:
Have you guys ever tried living in the wild? It fucking sucks. I did a wilderness training camp as a kid. The stuff we learned about survival was interesting but we had to spend a night sleeping outside in our debris huts. It poured buckets that night. A squirrel stole the leaves at the base of my debris hut. I was soaked by the end of the night. I now live in a city. Pandora can suck my dick.
But anyway, I came in here to ask if anyone still thinks that 3D films will ever become the norm. It's been over ten months, and I'm really not seeing it.

Why is it either "it's gonna disappear altogether" or "it's gonna become the norm"? I'm all for "a large number of screens will show a large number of 3D films every year, while everything else is business as usual". I know there was a lot of 3D trash made since Avatar because everyone tried to cash in, but it will settle down.

Pretty much.
I think it's probably here to stay, but not everything will be in 3D from here on out.
Just like how motion control is becoming a big thing in video games, but I think that'll just be part of the market, not the whole thing transforming.

Avatar II and III are confirmed for 2014 and 2015. Really quite surprised that Cameron wants to dedicate so much time to this. Assuming he'll do nothing in between.

Got the collector's edition blue-ray on black-friday and just watched it. Picture quality is lush and even in 2D the film still looks quite stunning, but it took an awfully long time to load and start, maybe it was acessing the internet on PS3? geez, does everything needs to be online? (I felt like a 70 years old now making this complain, but let's move on)
The collector's edition cut is slightly longer than the extended cut that was in theaters, besides the scenes Duke posted (the hunting scene is gorgeous btw), there's an alternate opening showing the overpopulated future earth, and more development of Sigourney Weaver's character, which i've found it to be pretty important to understand the tension in Pandora prior to Sully's arrival.
in short: She used to run a school to teach our culture and language to the natives, Neytiri was one of the students as well as her sister, which was killed by soldiers during an attack to one of the company's bulldozers.
I remember to be annoyed in the theatrical cut by the fact that Neytiri spoke english despite looking like the Na'vi barely had any contact with humans. I also though Weaver's hate for the military presence was a bit contrived, but these details made a bit more sense with that arc exposed.
I actually enjoyed the movie more in it's extended version, unlike Cameron's The Abyss and Aliens, which i preferred the shorter theatrical cuts. I don't think anyone will change their minds though.

The alternate opening does help to show what the corporate military guys are fighting to fix, making them less "Tear it down! Fuck the environment!" cartoons. And I also liked one of the deleted bits from Lang's speech at the beginning where he discusses their identification tags that told their country of original and religion. It didn't need to be in the scene, but it was just a nice detail that helped to show that they weren't all simply Americans.
I do think that the theatrical opening is better though, especially in how it reveals Sully being in a wheelchair. The Earth shots seem a bit too brief and don't do much to really display the scope of how unlivable it is beyond the shots of everyone walking around with oxygen masks. The new version also makes the proposition scene during his brother's cremation even more absurd.
I also haven't watched the most extended version all the way through yet, and I'm not sure how many others feel this way, but I definitely found my 2D home rewatch about six months after theatres to be a far less effective viewing. I'm not sure how much of that was because of the dimensional, visceral change and how much of it was just the movie not being as solid as I originally thought. The final battle scene is still as good as anything, though.

I got it too but I haven't opened it yet. I'll see if it loads the same way on my PS3.
Also, I LOVE the extended versions of Aliens and Abyss. The extended ending in Abyss was complete value add for me.
Aliens not so much, but I did enjoy the extra scenes with the sentry guns.

I can't picture Aliens without the sentry guns to be honest. I don't even know if I've seen that version.

It's the only version they show on TV which is the only way I have viewed the film (parts of it anyway) over the past few years. I originally watched it with the EE scenes added in and up until recently, thanks to Wikipedia, swore I must have been crazy and imagined the entire sentry gun sequence.

I watched Avatar again, for the first time since 2010 today. It was my first time watching the Extended Edition. Still enjoyed it, though not really to the extent I did back in 09. For starters, the whole photo-realism discussions we used to have about whether not we've finally made it. I'm still convinced we have here. The facial animations look incredible. And the blue beings we are not typically used to seeing in real life, is why your mind can't accept it. Though I will admit, the scenes that take place at night look far better than the ones that take place during the day.
For example, scene where Jake meetings the clan for the first time, and is stabbed so Tsahik can taste his blood, looks phenomenal. However the first scene where Jake uses the Avatar in the lab, is noticeably CGIie. The rest of the world, the base, the planet, the ships, wildlife...everything else, looks far better than most movies that come out today. It looks sharper, more detailed, and more polished. And this I cannot explain. When the scenes take place in the control rooms, where Parker talks about his unobtanium, the computer screen colors POP with greens, yellows and blues. It's gorgeous. The animals look better than Jurassic World.
The one thing I cannot explain, is why Cameron felt this movie needed narration. Silence would play so much better than dialog in most of the scenes where Jake is soaking up the scenery.
