View Full Version : Match Cut Mix Tape Volume 7 - Shake Your Booty

Spring time is upon us, the weather is starting to warm, and that means its time to get up, shake the dust off your legs and move that ass! You wanna get rid of that baby fat in time for swimsuit weather, right?
So... I'm gonna try something ambitious. What I need from you guys, is to provide me with songs that, when you hear them, you just can't help but get on your feet and start dancing. What I will then do, is take these songs and try to make a continuous DJ set out of them. I'll also release the songs by themselves as a regular mixed tape.
One thing - I'm not really savvy on the file share sites such as bittorrent & the like (I stopped doing that sort of thing with the demise of napster), so I may need some help getting my hands on some of the songs. I'll PM you guys on an individual basis if this is the case.
Who knows - this may be the coolest thing ever, or it may be a colossal failure. Only one way to find out, right? Well, send those songs in, and I'll post them in this initial post in the order in which I receive them.
Set List: (Locked)

Cool story about this song: it was my favorite song as a child, around six.
Next thing I knew, I was a twenty-three-year-old man who knew every single word to every single Electric Light Orchestra song (slight exaggeration, but only slight).
Then, not two or three months ago, I heard it again for the first time in, say, ten years. I said to myself (and to all in the room around me, I believe Thirdmango may've been there, maybe not...) "Hey, this sounds exactly like it was produced by Jeff Lynne." Kristen said "It probably was." It clicked that the two were pals (see: The Traveling Wilburys). I checked online. Sure enough, from the time I was six, I was a die-hard Jeff Lynne fan.
I thought it was a cool instance of interconnectedness.
Can't decide whether to go old skool, tekno, or totally off the wall.
Let's all enjoy this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHJ2ewywB2s&feature=related) while I contemplate.

I had a hard time deciding which song I was going to submit, but decided that one of the only songs that'll get me on the dancefloor regardless of mood, alcohol intake or any other factor, is... Op Til Månen by Hookah. Oh, you're all going to hate this song.

Okay this is ridiculously hard; I'll admit that when I need energetic upbeat music to get me on the dance floor or for exercising I often turn to pop du jour or the neo-punk of the early 00's and my college years. However, for this mix, I submit
"Hello" by The Cat Empire
whose music I think is scientifically impossible to sit still to.

Fun!
It is!
Good pick with The Field by the way. I went to quite the ordeal once to see him perform:
I got kicked out at a venue because security thought the stamp on my hand was fake
I nearly got punched when I told them they were wrong
I had to beg at the entrance for nearly half an hour, which wore those people out as they gave me a new stamp and let me back in
Five minutes I got kicked out again because I still had the old stamp on me
I got let back in but was told if I were to leave the building again I wouldn't be allowed to gain re-entrance. As you can imagine, I was in a bad mood by the time he performed. But I still enjoyed it. So he did fine.

So, I was playing around with some of the songs, making an initial stab at mixing them to get some ideas of good mixing and breaking points, determined the BPMs, etc, and I must say, a lot of the songs fit very nicely together. I have a good feeling about this!

if there's still room, i'd like to choose

there's an edit that's 7 minutes that you might like to use instead of the 12 minute mix

Not a problem. That will take up the final slot. Thanks for the heads up on the version.
So - everybody, I have a few people I'm working with to get my hands on the more obscure of the selections. After I have everything, give me a week to get the DJ set finished and posted. A few days after I post the DJ set, I'll post the tracks as individual files.
In the mean time, there are a few of you who are really talented with making album covers. If any of you are game for making one, I'd love to see it!

Quick Status Update:
I now have all the songs I need. Special thanks go out to Russ, Derek, Lasse & Acapelli for helping me get my hands on a few of songs I couldn't find on my own.
What's next, you ask? I need to get pretty familiar with these songs to know what their best mix-in and mix-out points are, and more importantly, to figure out what order they should go in. The best mixes sound like one continuous song, and that's what I'm shooting for here. I'll be spending the next few nights, after the kids are in bed, in the basement doing just that.
Then, I'm gonna proceed to the mixing. I'm gonna do 3-5 of them, pick the best one, and that's what I'm going to post. The goal is to have something for you to listen to a week from today, Friday May 8th.
Sound cool?

Awesome.
By the way, you can cut the last 25 seconds from my song, as it only serves as a tie-in for the next song on his album. It'd be a better transition to whatever song will follow mine on the mix without those 25 secs.

If this evening's try winds up being better, I'll go with that one; otherwise I'll go with the mix I recorded last Saturday.

Agree. I even like Lasse's choice. Not a clunker in the bunch, imo, but I'm sure that has as much to do with our esteemed Mix Master bac0n as much as anything.

Well, allow me to poop on the party a bit. After giving the entire thing one listen, I've come to two conclusions:
First, techno music is indeed, for the most part, one boring ass genre of music, as I've pretty much always suspected.
Second, Match Cut and I, on too many occasions, dance to different tunes.
That song by The Field would be good music to sleep to, but has no business on a dance mix. Same goes for a couple other of the ambient techno whatchamacallems. They put me in a trance, and in no way made me want to dance. Also, I don't like Bjork. There. I said it.
Still, a very cool mix, and kudos to Bacon for going above and beyond. Well done sir.

Aw, shucks.
A mix is only as good as the songs it contains. I got rather lucky inasumchas there was a lot of convergence of the BPMs of the songs. Most of the songs in the beginning third were in the 104-108 BPM range, most of the songs in the middle half hovered around 125 BPM, making mixing very easy. The only huge outlier, ironically, is Lasse's song, which is why I was forced to queue it up instead of trying to mix it in. Same with Prince & The Pipettes. They were in the middle 140s.
Thanks for the kind words everybody. I'm glad you enjoyed listening to it as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

I've been toying with the notion of having a Match-cut-Songs-for-dreamdead-and-thefourthwall's-wedding-reception (in which there will be no dancing, just excellent food and conversation). But, I haven't yet taken time to figure out how to work the megauploader, etc. However, that theme may not work for a continuous mix, and would in no way be offended if it was not used--I'll just figure out how to do the mix thing myself and do a thread at a different time.
