I don't even think it's under the radar. Maybe here, but it's basically the big talk on a cult forum I had been posting on. I guess it got a shitload of buzz in France because it had originally received an 18 rating for content, which would make it worse than the movies High Tension and Inside. I think, while the film is certainly violent to an extreme extent (and for those without a tolerance towards this sort of thing, or who would feel compelled to label the movie misogynist just because the violence is towards women or "torture porn" because the movie features torture, I would avoid this at all costs, because your intolerance towards violence would likely cause you to miss what Laguier is trying to do), people got more upset over the emotions the movie - ending especially - evokes.

Martyrs had a lot of buzz in Toronto, too. I missed it, but a lot of people were talking about it in subsequent Madness screenings. Apparently somebody threw up during the screening, and the programmer called it one of the most fucked up things he'd ever seen in the program. So, yeah, it was a huge hit.

I often question the validity of things like this, but yes, there's a Spanish television video, I believe it is, somewhere on YouTube where, I guess, paramedics answered to a festival screening of the movie, picking up a guy who passed out and a pregnant woman who felt nauseous. I probably won't buy it, since it is not the sort of my I could see myself enduring over and over, but will rent it if only for the hour-long featurette included, because I want to listen to Mylène Jampanoï talk cuz she's hot, and yes, watch the movie again to see if it holds up a second time.

It isn't out for sale yet either. Sometimes the rental companies have deals with distributors to release movies for rental early. Blockbuster was doing that for Weinstein films and Netflix does it for a lot indies.
