This is the thread wherein we drop more and more obscure references to films and film culture. At the same time posts ought to become increasingly verbose and incoherent as we try to out cinephile one another. You may also employ Bordwell's longevity, depth, breadth or insider techniques. Alternatively you may make up some techniques of your own and play them as wild cards when you feel your cinephilia slipping away.

Do you guys just want to have at it or should we make a list of match-ups, vote on winners and make brackets in order to crown Match-Cut's prince of cinephilia (also known as the filmic douchebag award)? We could also have general topics for each match up.

If you do want to do brackets... someone else organize it because I don't feel like it.

Shouldn't we just give Israfel the award?

I'm not enough of a film buff to be here. At least not by elitist standards :P

He'll do well with the depth and eloquence strategies but if he were matched against someone who could employ the longevity and insider strategies he may flounder! Think of it like rock paper scissors... or Pokemon!

Also his breadth has yet to be truly put to the test.

Yes perhaps we ought to cajole him in this general direction.

Sarcasm? I mean, are we to want him to take up numerous posts to essentially say one thing?

Breadth as Bordwell defines it... that is to say the number of films one has seen.

Ahhhh. Get Epistemophobia in here. He'll take that award with ease. Well, actually, you could give him a run for his money there.

Haven't seen enough films to take part in this. Plus some of the stuff I've said on this board would get me automatically eliminated.

I might be the dark horse for the breadth competition. Hard to count how many films I've seen but watching all the hundreds of Melies films and seeing over 30 films by quite a few filmmakers might help me out.

How did you get a hold of those?

The Flicker Alley box set. I watched the whole thing which amounts to every surviving film of his (13+ hours or something like that). Well worth it.

I think it's on KG. I downloaded something by Méliès that was huge, around 170 shorts I think. I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I would totally fail at this. I have a difficultish time articulating my feelings on movie things and stuff. I got some nice breadth though. Huzzah! ;)

Hahaha. This is an awesome idea. You should hand out bonus points for randomly using french words for no real purpose. Ie: 'trompe l'oeil illusions' instead of 'optical illusions'.
