food is among the most non-cinematic things. sure, sight can lead to appetite, but after all, it's taste and smell that count. what are some of your favorite food in films? i prefer one that's actually edible and (looks) yummy. not the cook, the thief, his wife and her lover kinda food. or similarly, scenes that really create the sense of appetite.

i have never heard of cucumber-buttermilk before until i watched A&R Carefree, and now i'm obsessed about it.

as a fan of spider-man 3 can contest, jame franco has a way with food. i don't think we actually know what on earth he did with bell peppers in the company. i kinda assume it's this...

There's a scene in For a Few Dollars More (pretty sure it was that one, could've been the first one) where one of the bank robbers pulls out a sandwich. Both my roommate and I simultaneously went "aaaaooougglhgghlh..." or however that drooling noise is spelled. Just a big ol' sandwich. Maybe I'll post a screen cap later.

I know that sandwich!

Oh, man. I drool every time I see that one.

Tampopo must certainly be one of the best food-oriented films. Hilarious and appetizing!

http://lowellfilm.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/tampopo.jpg

Anh Hung Tran's films, particular Vertical Ray of the Sun, always have a way of tickling my senses whenever food's being cooked. Of course, having Tran Nu Yên-Khê prepare it always helps.

It's not about food per se, at least in the way that Tampopo is, but Tran's style is so quiet and meditative that the preparation of food becomes purely sensual. The cutting of fruit, the sizzle of oil in the wok penetrate the screen. I am moved, I am hungry. :)

I was going to say Tampopo but since someone has I'll say Eat Drink Man Woman.

On the non-appetizing side of film there's that scene in Fistful of Dynamite where the richies are chowing down.

Oh and back on the appetizing there's Once Upon a Time in America's cupcake scene.

Wong Kar Wai has some good food stuff as well... Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, Chungking Express, Fallen Angels.

Oh god, I mentioned this in my top 100, but the cooking scenes in GoodFellas and several other Scorsese's always leave me craving pasta and sausage.

The recipe for the Scorsese Gravy is in the credits of the documentary Italianamerican.

Pretty extensive though.

That's the first film that came to mind.

Also, Babette's Feast.

I love it when they're making dinner in prison in Goodfellas.

In Bela Tarr's The Man from London the characters are always eating some black-colored mess which looks like puke. For some reason that's the first detail that came to mind.

The way they made Ratatouille in the film is directly from Thomas Keller's recipe that he uses at The French Laundry.

Instead of making it as a stew, he layers the vegatables like in the film. I've actually made it both ways, and Keller's method not only looks more appetizing, it tastes leagues better than the typical stew form.

In addition, the sandwich that Adam Sandler makes in Spanglish is pretty awesome.

Grilled B.L.T with swiss cheese and a fried egg cut in half so the yolk runs.

REALLY good stuff.

I second Tanpopo. Also, the Puerco Pibil in Once Upon A Time In Mexico was about the only thing I found worthwhile in that entire movie. The special feature where Robert Rodriguez shows you how to make the stuff is my favorite special feature of all time. I make the dish every Cinco de Mayo.

Very good. Just can't find banana leaves to make it properly.

Also, it wasn't as good as the book, but Like Water for Chocolate still made the food look amazing.

The scenes where Juliette Binoche is stocking up her store in Chocolat always get me drooling for chocolate, even though I'm not much of a chocolate lover.

Though it could have more to do with her being covered in delicious sweets.

By the way, for anyone who liked the film and hasn't seen the book, the book is full of recipes. They look great, but I was always scared to try them because they were written in metric measurements.
