And yet of everyone on this board, you're the one who I'd foresee as being the person who would most likely find a connection to the work in question as it's beautifully classical in terms of pure filmmaking.

Come Drink with Me - 8
A Touch of Zen - 9

The latter film came across as soooo dark on my tv for the first hour (which I understand the intentionality behind) , but the pure virtuoso sequences in the last act is too marvelous to hold this one back. I love the depth that he gives the women in the films, which is obviously unusual for the genre at the time.

The last act is one of the best things I've ever seen on film.

One of those cases where a DVD viewing feels like an advertisement to see it on the big screen. The things Hu does with light and color in the last section are incredible (at times it even feels like a James Benning landscape survey film), but a TV screen simply can't do them any kind of justice. Aside from the visual splendor though, I was constantly engaged in the story and Ku's arc was especially well-handled. Between this and Come Drink With Me, I'm most impressed with Hu's light touch about things. I think this is probably the most I'll like a kung-fu movie, although I'm willing to delve deeper and prove myself wrong.

Come Drink With Me - 8
Dragon Gate Inn - 8
A Touch of Zen - 10
The Valiant Ones - 6
Legend of the Mountains - 6
The Swordsman - 8
Painted Skin - 8

A Touch of Zen probably has the best final act of any film ever made. It is a monumental achievement of the art form.

If there has ever been a film that deserves the Criterion treatment, it is A Touch of Zen. But then again, it's just a kung fu movie...

I hope to see this film remastered some day - it's one of my cinematic dreams.

This is going to be the easiest week to tally ever. I can almost manage doing all the maths in my head. Stupid fractions.

I am happy that Dragon Inn has received enough votes to qualify.

?

They've transferred a ton of samurai films I'm sure they'll get to kung fu eventually.

Bryan Singer has 6 pages of discussion.

King Hu has one.

That's an embarrassment!

:)

I'll be talking to myself here for the next 5 pages to balance that out.

A Touch of Zen, first Chinese film to be recognized by the Cannes film festival, that's cool.

Here is a cool article on the film:

Hu's use of montage to suggest action was a great influence on the directors of the Hong Kong new wave, especially Tsui Hark.

Actually this thread. I've been reading the board for some time know, and have discovered many great films as a result.

Most of that, oddly enough, is about whether Bryan Singer is worth discussing. :|

That's what it's called in English.

You might see it as "A Touch of Zen aka Seasons Three and Four of The Cosby Show."

It's a little confusing.
