For my class, I'm doing a report on Howard Hawks and five of his films. For each of his films (I chose Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, Only Angels Have Wings, The Big Sleep, Red River), we are supposed to briefly describe two initial reviews of the film of the time of its release. Problem is, I don't know where to look. I can find plenty of contemporary reviews, but not old ones.

The only one I know of is Bosley Crowther of the NY Times. Here's the link (http://movies.nytimes.com/movies/critics/Bosley-Crowther?sort=by-title&query=) to his stuff, though I don't know if any or all of the films you're reviewing have reviews on here.
EDIT: If Crowther didn't review it, just search for the title and you might still find a review. Some of them are three or four sentences though, and may not be much help.

That's a pretty harsh thing to ask of a researcher, particularly since the student may choose an even older director. Seems odd. I don't know of any in particular, but if you are picking up books to read on Hawks, look in biographical sections. They'll sometimes talk about his released and briefly mention critical reception. Not much, though...

Thanks, this helps a lot. I just need to find one more.

Did you have to choose an older director? 'Cuz that's a terrible assignment given that old reviews are very hard to find and are usually contained mainly in book collections.

Yes, we had to choose a director who had made 5 studio films before 1950. I chose Hawks, because everyone else was choosing Hitchcock or Wilder.
I have actually found enough critic reviews at that time by just googling in Google Book.

No problem. Actually, Spinal deserves the credit. I followed his lead when we were doing the top ten of each year and had to find critic blurbs. Crowther was the most dependable.

Your library doesn't have collections of old reviews? Even my trashy community college has an array of review anthologies.
