One of the greatest of all human achievements. The Adult Swim logo almost always means quality adult-oriented animated programming. I say "almost" because there have been a few "misses", and they also broadcast "Family Guy" which makes me want to launch a full assault to force it off the air.

But the quality they have reached with many of their shows is astounding.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Sealab 2021
Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law
Squidbillies
Frisky Dingo
The Venture Bros.
Metalocalypse

All Adult Swim originals.

"Frisky Dingo" is nothing short of brilliant.

The zany, pop-culture obsessed antics of "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" and "Sealab 2021" could teach QT a thing or two about paying homage to beloved movies and TV series'.

Surprisingly, I'm just now starting to watch "Metalocalypse", and - in true "Adult Swim" style - it's fantastic. This show would perfectly define the term "loving parody", and I find it hilarious and awesome that the Dethklok music is actually freaking amazing metal.

So, yeah, Adult Swim...spread the love.

I like some things AS has done, think some are quite brilliant, got tired with most of their shows eventually.

The best thing they ever did was give Home Movies a second chance and then ordered three more seasons.

Haven't watched it over a year, though.

Yes, "Home Movies" is great.

I've been putting off buying the DVD set because I feel it's a tad overpriced.

I flat out love Adult Swim. My favorite shows on there (in no particular order) are The Venture Brothers, The Boondocks, ATHF, Frisky Dingo, Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, Metalocalypse, SeaLab 2021, Home Movies, Space Ghost, Saul of the Mole Men, and my recent favorite, The Drinky Crow Show. Which I'm using Adult Swim's radical website to watch every single episode I've missed from Season 1.

Can't say I care for their anime shows, and some of their programming is just absolutely stupid (I loathe Squadbilles, Eric and Tim Awesome Show Great Job, and I don't care for SuperJail). They've sadly become really over reliant on Family Guy and American Dad reruns, but I still overlook this fact because of the good body of work they've made over the years.

Tim and Eric has the highest highs of any Adult Swim show, but some of the sketches are as painfully awful as almost anything on television. Still, the good outweighs the bad, but the show could use more appearances by Zach Galafianakis and John C. Reilly. Reilly's Dr. Brule sketch where he goes wine-tasting is nothing short of comedic perfection.

My favorite of their shows is Aqua Teen, but Frisky Dingo and Venture Bros. aren't far behind. Don't really care for Sealab or Squidbillies, but I've only seen an episode or two of each.

I could see someone not liking "Sealab" also not digging "Squidbillies" - similar humor.

Though I'm surprised you're a fan of "Frisky Dingo". Same creative team as "Sealab", and I find them almost identical in their jokes and characters. Even use many of the same voices.

I love a lot of adult swim but thought I should remind people of the existence of Lucy Daughter of the Devil. Such a good show.

Also I did find the sealab season one dvds that Sycophant sold me, after I bought a new copy, so I have two copies of it now as well as copies of all the other seasons.

Tim and Eric is where comedy goes to die. Long, painful, torturous death that goes on and on for hours on end until comedy is pleading, "No, please, just let me die now! Please!" But no, Tim and Eric keep it around to burn it with red-hot glowing irons and bamboo shoots. It's like watching torture porn, but the viewer is the one being tortured.

Tim and Eric Terrible Show Great Job, Bob Eats Out the Mayor, and Xavier: The Renegade Buttplug are like black holes in otherwise decent to excellent programming. Superjail is right on the line, and I'm just waiting for it to get pulled into that black hole, too.

BESIDES THE FACT THAT TIM AND ERIC ISN'T EVEN FUCKING ANIMATED ...

Venture Bros., Robot Chicken, and Metalocalypse are the three best shows on there right now. Drinky Crow is the newest and most promising, I think. Squidbillies is funny, but it would suck without Unknown Hinson playing Early.

Aqua Teen is overstaying its welcome. Harvey Birdman was hilarious, but gone now. Sealab 2021 was good until the guy who played Murphy died, then it went to shit. Delocated isn't even animated, so fuck it. Lucy, Daughter of the Devil never did anything for me. Frisky Dingo doesn't do anything for me, either.

They gotta ease off the Family Guy. I'm seriously worn out of seeing it seventeen times a fucking night. Then again, it hasn't been very good these last couple years.

I love King of the Hill. Glad it's on at a time I can watch it. Never been a fan of Home Movies, but I'll watch it on occasion. Mission Hill deserved more episodes.

Even if you hate the rest of Tim & Eric - and I concede with Derek that they are wildly hit-or-miss, although so was Mr. Show... and Inland Empire - you must admit to finding at least several sketches completely hilarious. Their 'Universe' musings, "Not Jackie Chan", most of the the Steve Brule stuff, and the Vodka commericals they've done are among the funniest stuff I've seen in ages.

This is a good post. "Wildly hit-or-miss" is a good way to describe them. When they hit, however, it is absolute comedic gold. In addition to your list I would add "The Pig Man" and everything with Tommy Wiseau, the Mancierge with Fred Willard, 'Cinco Boy' commercials, and especially Tairy Greene's acting seminar, just out of what limited things I've seen.

:crazy:Heh. Robot Chicken is just as hit or miss as Tim and Eric. And Frisky Diego is hilarious, but I doubt there will be another season. I'm happy that they added the good and underrated King of the Hill to the lineup.

PS: Its a damn shame that there may not be a third season of The Boondocks. Hearing what Uncle Ruckus would have to say about Obama getting elected alone makes me desire it more than anything else. But I've heard that plans for it plus negotiations with the show's creators seem to be following through. I hope that's wrong, though.

I can not say anything positive about Tim and Eric, I really hate that show. I don't understand its popularity and I don't understand how the hell they get some of the people they get on the show. But, whatever, I just change the channel and rant on the Internet.

Robot Chicken? Hit or miss? You're on crack.

I really enjoyed Moral Orel, too. It got really dark, there, closer to the end of the series. There were a few episodes that really surprised me with how dark they went. I love that shit.

How the hell did Xavier get a second season? Honestly, I've never met anybody who finds that show funny. Not even on the Internet!

I like that they picked up Look Around You and Garth Marenghi, although neither of them belong on Adult Swim.

Oh, I think The Boondocks is pretty funny, too.

A lot of their original content takes a while for me to like. But I've grown to love to most of their shows now. The only show I've never liked is Squidbillies. Just ugly animation. I don't really "get" Drinky Crow either, although I like how they use the old style of novel illustrations for their animation. A lot of the gore across many of the shows strikes me as often done for the sake of itself.

Some of the shows' style I can appreciate (like Superjail being modeled after all those drawings of battles you might have drawn in the 7th grade), but some just never stick.

The move to live action programming indicates they're more after certain types of humor, no matter the medium.

As a fan of anime, I'm disappointed they moved away from airing shows five times a week. And among their new anime, they really haven't had anything really good since Death Note. Seriously, what's going on with Moribito? The ratings must have been terrible, because they aired just ten episodes, moved it to last thing on the schedule and look to not have ordered more. It's too bad because it was essentially a serialized Princess Mononoke. Bleach I don't understand why I keep watching. It feels aimed at 12-year olds. Code Geass is alright I suppose. The main character is a bit of a sociopath.

Let me put it this way. Adult Swim provided me with some solid entertainment back in the day. However now that I no longer smoke the chronic I find it's endless series of absurdities and non sequitur's leaves much to be desired. Watched the first episode of The Drinky Crow Show. Not sure about this. The old timey art at odds with the pornographic and extremely violent content is kind of interesting I guess, but I didn't find the pilot all that funny. From the few Maakies comic strips I've read, seems like a faithful adaptation but again with those I found them more kind of interesting than funny and not something I was compelled to seek out more of.

Despite being a big fan of The Venture Bros., something at the very beginning of the second season has always bugged the hell out of me.

So we enter Season Two with Hank and Dean dead, right? Doc has run off to party and whatever because he doesn't want to face the loss of his sons, and Brock chases after him.

Why is Doc so upset by their deaths when (as we find out an episode or two later) the sons could be (and actually are being) cloned as if nothing had happened at all?

They even make a point of stating that this has happened like 14 times before.

Was this a case of poor writing, or did I miss something?

First episode of Lucy the Daughter of the Devil - Enjoyed it. Kind of has the feel of an extended improv bit with the premise of "The Devil has a daughter in arts high school", but by good improv people not hacky improv people, which has then been animated (not very well). Funny stuff, the voice actor for the Devil is great.

Verdict: Will continue.

The laughs in "Venture Bros" are frequent and hearty, but what consistently amazes me and keeps me coming back is the incredible plotting.

Honestly, the writing is brilliant from every angle you look at it. It works as both an ongoing narrative and a series of stand-alone adventure/comedy episodes, and the way the characters' pasts entwine and futures collide is incredible.

That's why this little slip-up at the beginning of the second season sticks out like a sore thumb to me. It seems like something they would have had up their sleeves since day one, but it's incorporated like something they made up that day.

It's not often an episode's title alone is enough to send me into giggle fits, but last night, I looked at the back of one of my Home Movies disc cases and saw the title "Those Bitches Tried to Cheat Me." Oh, how I laughed!

Solid episode, too. Especially when Mr. Lynch utters the episode's title. <3 Mr. Lynch.

Okay... so I only found out that John Lee and Vernon Chatman had another show after Wonder Showzen (which I consider to be one of the most underrated things ever) and that that show was Xavier: Renegade Angel.

The only mention of it in this thread is it being hated on, and obviously there's tons of better things on Adult Swim (I mean... they even show Darkplace and the better Office), but I blew through the first season over the last week and I have to say that it's one of the most enjoyably fucked things I've seen in a while.

It's not quite as consistently hilarious as Showzen, but it's mesmerizing.

It's practically its own network, it just doesn't run 24/7.

I love me some Drinky Crow Show. I need to get back to watching episodes of that on the website, as I no longer have Cartoon Network. That show is wonderfully demented and very funny. Kind of disturbing, too, but then so is Metalocalypse and that show rocks as well.

Of course Home Movies is brilliant. I still detest Xavier and Tim and Eric, though. Winston "Lucy" is a bit hit and miss at times, but the funny is mostly there. Plus the way they portray Jesus and the Devil is awesome.

I just watched the sequence again.

Rusty uses the death of the boys as an excuse to go out and travel the world and get hammered. The song, "Everybody's Free" and its upbeat vibe is played against the whole thing, possibly echoing Rusty's sentiment the whole time. Brock makes no qualms about calling him out for his real intentions when he finds him. Rusty is not mourning anything, he's celebrating.

Some are much better than others. Sad to see that most of the ones I loved are already out of the running. I'd rank them:

Amazing:
Totally 4 Teens

Quite funny:
Snake n' Bacon
Neon Knome
Yappy Broads

Not very good, but some potential:
Duckworth
Cheyenne Cinammon
Soul Quest Overdrive

Horrible:
Southies

Suprised at some of the people in them: David Cross in Soul Quest Overdrive, Dr. Rich Sanchez/Matt Berry in Duckworth, Neko Case, T-Pain and MF DOOM in Cheyenne Cinnamon, Bill Hader in Snake n' Bacon, and Kristen Schaal in three of them.

It should also be pointed out that T4T is essentially Wonder Showzen 2.0 with much of the people from that involved and neeeeeds votes. Its competition is a mediocre ATHF rip-off with only a couple of funny moments.

I don't know if Boondocks is smarter than South Park. I think they are both well-reasoned and display the same level of intelligence and observation. It's just that Aaron McGruder is not afraid to indulge in his political beliefs, whereas Matt and Trey tend to measure themselves from their opinions by reducing certain aspects of their commentary into absurd scatological humor. Boondocks has its share of absurd humor, but for the most part confronts the issues pretty head-on. South Park is afraid of being preachy.

Like all things Tim and Eric, it either works or not at all. This one was, unfortunately, the latter for me, although I did like the line "Yeah, well, I had a black son until this asshole killed him. So fuck you guys." Sometimes their rhythm is just too off. I understand that spontaneity is essential to their schtick, though I don't feel that other longer things they've done, like the Vodka ads, suffer as drastically from poor rhythm as this one did.

My friend dv-red (or whatever in hell its called) last night's Season 3 opener of The Boondocks. Not only is it amazing because of the "Dick Riding Obama" song, but also because it features Werner Herzog being brillaint, hilarious, and his usual self as he makes a documentary about the effects of Obama getting elected on the show's cast. I'm sure that Huey's indifferent reaction to Obama getting elected can be chalked up to so many different things, but I like that the show left that open to interpretation. Plus Uncle Ruckus' reaction is naturally funny, even though its a bit predictable.

Yeah, I was having a hard time trying to figure out what the show was saying there. I figured with the cops in riot gear at the inauguration, perhaps the message was: nothing changes.

And oh my god was Herzog fantastic. "I was reminded of a saying from my town of [German phrase], which means 'this is the most f%&king depressing kid I have ever met.'"

Or something to that effect.

number8
05-17-2010, 03:29 PM
Hm. I thought the message was quite clear, actually. It was less about Obama himself or Americans as a whole and more about the black community's elated hopes that a black President would automatically make lives improve dramatically for black folks, which was definitely a sentiment I remember encountering very often around the inauguration. Huey, radical that he is, was just savvy enough to know that black empowerment doesn't come from black authority figures.

Also, perhaps I related to that episode more because I lived near a JobCorp back in San Francisco, so it's quite often that I rode a bus with, um, black kids of Riley Freeman's mold. No joke, I have actually heard one kid on the bus say exactly the same things Riley said. "We got a black President now, we taking over!" It was pretty sickening to hear back then, and I remember it, so I knew exactly what the show was going for there.

Thugnificent's episode was merely solid, but I laughed at most of the jokes and enjoyed it overall. The Kick-Ball episode was good, although we get it already: the show is obsessed with kung fu and anime. Still loved the Dragon-Ball Z reference, though.

But last night's was goddamn unflinching, funny, and very racist. I'm still not really sure what the hell to think of it, although the Uncle Ruckus songs were shocking and funny, which is what Ruckus usually brings to the show. Having a longtime racist white country singer team up with Ruckus while ignoring the fact that he's black may be a commentary on something, perhaps, or is just the show being ironic. Regardless, this one was right up there with the season opener.

Went to a JG Thirlwell concert last night. Fucking amazing set, but what knocked my socks off was that he ended the performance with a 15 minute Venture Bros medley.

Hearing the theme song from a live orchestra: heavenly.

Holy crap, I assumed I was the only Thirlwell fan here. I've been listening to Foetus for YEARS. I started watching Venture Bros. because of Thirlwell's involvement.

I actually had the opportunity to interview him years ago for Industrial Nation magazine. I jumped on it, but I'd never interviewed anybody before, let alone a musician that I was a fan of. The interview was awkward and stumbling. I'm not sure Thirlwell was too pleased with me. After I got home and listened to the tape, I realized that I'd set the recorder down facing the wrong way, so most everything was mumbling. I figured it was for the best.

Heh. The Black Dynamite animated series looks exactly like The Boondocks.

You know, I completely forgot to post about The Boondocks' season (series?) finale in here when it ended. Anyways, it was a 24 spoof, so of course I thought it was hilarious (and yes I laughed at the nut stomping/nut kicking jokes-so sue me :P). If the show doesn't come back for another season I wouldn't be surprised, but I'm hoping it really does. Although Adult Swim is correct that they could just have one season full of the episodes that actually weren't even allowed to air.

Man, I hate Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Whenever it's on, I try to like it and I try to see what everyone finds so funny about it, but the whole show and especially the voice acting are the definition of grating.

I love the show. So does Jen.

She and I use "ATHF", "Sealab", "Venture Bros." and "Squidbillies" as regular programming for putting on to go to sleep.

The only two Adult Swim shows I detest are Squidbillies and Tim and Eric. I haven't bothered to check out Children's Hospital. The one show they used to have but I guess it died due to poor ratings was The Drinky Crow Show.

I also hate Delocated.

I don't know if people know this but I discovered it this week: Apparently volumes 4 and 5 of Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast is available at adultswim.com so for those looking to own the rest of the series (and my favorite part of the series) you can find it there only.

It started last night, and I didn't realize it was going to be a six-night thing until right before I sat down to watch it. But oh man, it was glorious. I don't know how Lee and Chatman have once again managed to pack so much insanely funny (or just plain insane) stuff into such a short amount of time. If the remaining five episodes are as good as the first one, then I'm going to be grinning endlessly for days despite whatever laugh-related injuries I might sustain.

I watched three episodes so far tonight. Man this show is insane.I'm going to DVR another episode tonight, but after the first three I agree that its batshit crazy. There's humor, disturbing moments, odd ball craziness, and everything else thrown in. Makes fun of both horror and soap operas all at the same time, which is sort of impressive. Plus Patton Oswalt and that cute girl from The Daily Show.

...all now represent a significant chunk of my favourite shows on television. And that's not even counting things like Venture Bros, Black Dynamite, Mary Shelley's Frankenhole, Metalocalypse, newer Aqua Teen, and China, IL, all of which I've seen some of, but not as much as I'd like.

But those main seven or eight shows just tend to reach something beyond funny for me that's almost impossible to describe.

Chatman and Lee are people I have no reservations in calling geniuses, even if I realize I might also be in a select group that has no problem actually watching their stuff beginning to end.

EDIT: This season is going to be 14 episodes?! AND it's going to still air every day without breaks.

Only Adult Swim, guys. I love them so.

At least they put up some of their shows on Netflix, even if its only Season 1's. I burned through my rewatch of Season 1 of The Venture Brothers way too quickly.

Yeah, I do think it peaks a bit with the slasher bit in the middle, but the hard reset at the end is worth sticking around for. Smarf is the best.
