Centurion centers on the famed 9th Legion fighting for their lives behind enemy lines after a devastating guerrilla attack, and joining Olga Kurylenko for the hacking and slashing are Michael Fassbender (Inglorious Basterds), who plays the title character, Dominic West, and Noel Clarke. Marshall spoke with Empire during a set-visit and he described Kurylenko's character Etain thusly: "Her family were butchered by the Romans, she had her tongue cut out by the Romans, she's had a hell of a time and she's out for Roman blood." In reality, the 9th Legion were Cesar's most faithful soldiers who were believed to be lost during their stay in Britain while fighting the Scots -- a theory that while the inspiration for plenty of historical novels, has since been debunked. But, true or not, I won't hold it against Marshall, because it probably made for a much more interesting story than the truth.

Centurion is currently filming on location in Scotland, and is expected to arrive in theaters with Kurylenko in all her avenging glory later this year.

Neil Marshall is a guy whose films I will always check out even if they don't fulfill their potential.

This is the project he describes as The Warriors in ancient Rome, yes? Can't wait to see it.

Neil Marshall's pretty much my favorite director working. There in a heartbeat.

Trading Beckinsale Lite for Olga? Oh yes. And it sounds ludicrous and fun. Sure.

Can't wait. He's going to do something brilliant at some point. Love The Descent and Doomsday has some great moments.

I'm assuming then that you haven't seen Dog Soldiers?

'Cuz it's totally brilliant.

Yeah, still his best movie to date.

After Doomsday, I'm not quite as interested. His editing pisses me off.

Dog Soldiers is good, but when I say brilliant, I mean masterpiece, or something that will at least be one of my favorites.

He gets Olga, and gives her no tongue. Win.

I still haven't seen Doomsday, but Dog Soldiers and The Descent are both freaking brilliant.

But I'm honestly not expecting much from this. Not my cup of tea, anyways.

Well, this can't possibly be worse than Doomsday.

Doomsday is a movie that, while definitively bad, I can't bring myself to hate. It's still a shitload of gory fun.

It's Neil Marshall, so I'll watch it.

I like how strong a presence he's given the lead female warrior. Don't often see that. Especially when set against men.

I really, really, really need to rewatch Doomsday. It's so up my alley but I just wasn't in the right mood when I watched it.

Hahaha! It's Mickey Smith from Doctor Who... and McNulty... and a Russian model...

It's gonna be glorious.

Got a press release from Magnet saying they picked this up to be the sixth flick in the Six Shooter Film Series, with a summer release.

Considering that the first five flicks in the series never went wide, I'm sad it won't get a full release. At least XBox will have it early.

Saw the trailer for this before Predators. Looks really cool. Fassbender + West = mancrush central.

I just hope this isn't as poorly directed as Doomsday. I rewatched some of that on tv last night, and while it's all very atmospheric and cool looking, most of the action sequences as bad if not worse than Michael Bay. Only the final chase scored to Frankie Goes to Hollywood really works.

It's a bit ridiculous that I'm about to leave for a press screening of this when the movie's already out On Demand for almost a week, and yet the theatrical release is a month away.

Didn't think this was all that great, to be honest.
Gets repetitive fast. Fassbender is rather bland in it (really good actor, but lacks charisma). West was fun, though.

That was the most CGI blood I think I've ever seen. At least this was better than Doomsday.

Yes. If you have HDNet Movies, they are showing it August 25th as well.

Something that occurred to me; did they say "fuck" a lot in the year 120 AD? That seemed a bit out of place. Maybe it's implied they'd be speaking Italian using the Italian slang? Dunno.

Well, yeah, it's a cinematic choice. You're already switching the actual language, so you have to then write to the context of the language.

Rome did the same thing. Spartacus: Blood and Sand too. I like it better than forcing everyone in ancient times, regardless of class, to speak in deliberate, flowery sentences. THAT is more out of place to me.

Good point. It just seems funny to me when Quintus tells Ubriculius to put his "fuckin knife away".

The swear words, not so much. I was more tickled by the modern British phrases. I actually love how there was no difference in how Marshall wrote Roman soldiers here and how he wrote the Brit Army men in Dog Soldiers.

I was laughing when one of them shouted, "Well, whaddaya waitin' for, lads, an order? Get stuck in it!" before jumping into a bar fight.

"Fuck" (and its variations) is one of the oldest swear words in English, and no doubt in Latin too. (Just check out the poems of Catullus).

I was disappointed in this one. It's great to look at -- in a National Geographic sort of way -- but the start is muddled and it takes too long to get going.

I love the idea of doing a sort of Anabasis in ancient Britain .. but mostly this movie is about a half dozen guys running through beautiful landscapes while fighting ... shitty English weather.
