View Full Version : Match Cut's Movies to See Before You Die (or Get a Girlfriend)

Well, I compiled all the Top 100 lists, and after hours of formatting titles, chasing indefinite and definite articles, screwing up the averages, and waiting for MadMan to wrestle with his philosophical list-making demons, I have a masterlist of films recommended by us. That's right, you and me. And some other guys too.
The list is ranked according to number of list mentions (quick stat at the time of first posting: 28 lists submitted, 25 of them complete. Feel free to join the fun by posting in the original thread, and I will update at regular intervals dicatated by work, caffeine intake, love of humanity and pressing issues best confronted with rigorous procrastination).
I decided to start with a 2 list mention threshold, as I think to truly be a group masterlist AFI-style, there needs to be at least one other person in our group who agrees with you. I didn't mention this earlier because there is nothing I dislike more in consensus voting than people purposefully leaving off films that are sure to be included so they can "reward" other movies. Screw that - I want an honest picture of the films we like a lot, rather than slather of little pictures we want to boost. We have plenty of threads where we can recommend films; this one is for us to discover a little more about we value. In fact, I would have preferred to have received the lists by PM, so there could be no "tactical" voting, but I didn't have the idea to compile until it was too late. Nevermind; I hope this will suffice.
But before I start, as a curtain-raiser, I propose to present some comparisons between posters. Perhaps you'll finally discover who your movie soulmate is.

In compiling the lists, I accumulated data on how many overlaps individual posters had with other lists - if a movie from your list was found on five other lists, you got five points, for example (note: I left out posters who didn't provide all 100 films, so I didn't have to worry about averaging and the like. I know, I'm lazy, but I've learnt to live with that.) I then got a ranking of the 25 list compilers from highest scorer (most overlaps) to the lowest scorers (fewest overlaps).
First up, the Top 5...
THE VOICES OF MATCH CUT
1. jamaul (453 points, average 19.7 films shared with other lists)
2. Weeping Guitar (394/17.1)
3. Watashi (381/16.6)
4. Yxklyx (364/15.8)
5. megladon8 (354/15.4)
Jamaul a clear winner. He now becomes the spokesperson for what is or is not accepted at Match Cut. The upshot is that the rest of us are now saved from watching so many movies. This will free up time for other activities, like stalking celebrities, or porn.

THE MATCH CUT MAVERICKS
25. Daniel Davis (141/6.1)
24. Antoine (192/8.3)
23. The Mike (214/9.3)
22. Spinal (244/10.6)
21. Boner M (249/10.8)
Again, another clear winner, with Daniel Davis walking away with the title. But he's in good company. These guys march to their own beat. Go their own way. Stray off the beaten path. Make me check IMDB to make sure they aren't inventing movies.

Not too shocked to see that Raiders and I have fairly similar taste. I used his list back in '05/'06 to fill in blanks of cinematic history, so that's fairly unsurprising.
I am shocked to see that Ezee E and I even have that much crossover. Daniel and I at least try to meet one another in exemplary genre work, but without the greatest Scorsese connection, I'm oddly interested in scanning where else we had conjoining interests.

Commentary and Notes:
* First of five films on the list for Werner Herzog, which makes him tied at 11th for most loved director at Match Cut based on number of films represented. (complete director rundown to take place at some stage, probably at the end).
* First strike against Match Cut:
- number of films by Sam Fuller on the list = 4
- number of films by Rob Reiner on the list = 4
* The Departed is also on the list. So much for the poverty of remakes :)

Hey, Infernal Affairs made it on the list even without my help!
Acutally, quick question--since it was #99 or #100 and pushed off my list-- would having had my vote, a third support that would've brought down its placement average, knocked it lower on the last?
Basically, what's the method here?

Hey, Infernal Affairs made it on the list even without my help!
Acutally, quick question--since it was #99 or #100 and pushed off my list-- would having had my vote, a third support that would've brought down its placement average, knocked it lower on the last?
Basically, what's the method here?
The rankings are exceptionally simple: the films are ordered by number of list mentions, with ties (of which there are many, naturally) split first by average ranking (for those lists that were listed preferentially) and failing that, by highest individual ranking.
I was going to assign points based on position, and all that, but I figured that, because so many people described the ordering of their list as somewhat changeable, I decided to treat the list first and foremost as a submission of 100 "best" films. I think it is the best system for this type of activity, despite any flaws it may have. Basically, it's a measure of the films we treasure as a group.
With Infernal Affairs, your vote would have pushed it to at least 315 (when the 3 list movies start), and it would have beaten The Departed, which got two votes as well, but a slightly better average ranking.

When I first posted my top 100 at RT, someone described it as "AFI's list with foreign films." Looking back, it was an accurate assessment. There were a lot of titles like Casablanca, Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Gone with the Wind and other films that I like and respect, but do not love. In retrospect, it's an embarrassing list. (On the other hand, the film with the number one spot has not changed.)
It's nice to know that I have now achieved "maverick" status.

Are you suggesting that my list is conventional? If so, dammit . . . I agree.
I've made other lists, where I tried way too hard to be hip and different. But I was citing movies I didn't really love. Casablanca, Kane and Godfather are all on my list, and I seriously love them. They are all films I've revisted throughout my adulthood and, upon subsequent viewings, have continued to grow in my esteem.
Gone With the Wind is balls though. I've always thought so. Shriveled, hairy, sweaty, smelly, urine color-toned balls.

I think I would drop the word "great," and just make it that it is too bad there aren't more films made by women. It is rather strange. Maybe something genetically that women do not pursue the art of filmmaking as much as men do, or perhaps simply a history of the marginalization of women. However, I do think that from what I have seen their percentage of "great" movies is every bit as high as men. There is just a much smaller pool to choose from.

Examining the history there's no reason to believe in any genetic factor it seems primarily to be one of marginalization, both in general but particularly in this industry.
Also my guess is The Ascent will be highest.

Maybe I'm wrong. I often am. But aren't there far more "left wing" filmmakers (especially documentary filmmakers) than "right wing" ones? Is it something about filmmaking not exactly being the most financially practical line of work to go into? For every "Fahrenheit 911" and "Taxi to the Dark Side," why don't we have a well-made doc just as far to the other end of the spectrum?

But, to Raiders' idea, I still think that the Film world is a man's world behind the scenes. We hear more female producers, but I'm curious as to what that percentage is as well. I can't even think of a female cinematographer.
Despite the liberalism of the filmworld, I don't think male producers tend to feel comfortable having a female in charge of a huge project. Are there any that have done a project over $100 million?

There's quite a number of female editors, designers, producers, etc., but the number of female screenwriters and directors is embarrassingly low.
Considering all the women I've known interested in those positions, it seems unlikely that the reason for this number has anything to do with any kind of female aversion to these professions.

I do worry about this gender bias. My niece is going into filmmaking and will be traveling to NY to check out NYU in a few weeks. Tuition alone is $50,000 per year. Her mom has $8000 per year available and is considering taking out a loan for the other $42,000. Wow! Sounds like a too big of a gamble to me. I'd hate to be a woman going into the industry already $168,000 in debt.

The rejuvenation of the documentary came in what, '02 or '03? I think a lot of filmmakers were inspired or disgusted with the Bush Administration over the past 8 years that alone goes a long way in explaining the overwhelming imbalance. Also, conservatives generally tend to defend the status quo, stand for more traditional values, believe in limiting the powers of government, arguing for self-reliance over collective improvement. Political films generally tend to challenge the way things are, stick up for the disenfranchised and question the powers that be. The status quo needn't defend itself, only show the dangers of change/progressivism/what have you or, even better, say nothing at all and hope people accept the way things are. Which they often do. I simply don't think the documentary form is really suited for its needs like it does more progressive filmmakers. You have your Tyler Perry's and Fireproof's as narrative film examples and certain news programs/networks as other. Hardcore right-wingers have tried comedy and if you've seen the short-lived right-wing rip-off of The Daily Show or An American Carol (I've only seen clips, but based on that and word of mouth, it's awful), you'll know why there aren't more.

A woman has only been nominated three times for Best Director. And we have already determined there are far more women directors than cinematographers. Despite the liberalism of the filmworld, I don't think male producers tend to feel comfortable having a female in charge of a huge project. Are there any that have done a project over $100 million?

Maybe I'm wrong. I often am. But aren't there far more "left wing" filmmakers (especially documentary filmmakers) than "right wing" ones? Is it something about filmmaking not exactly being the most financially practical line of work to go into? For every "Fahrenheit 911" and "Taxi to the Dark Side," why don't we have a well-made doc just as far to the other end of the spectrum?
People do make those docs they just suck. Open minded sensibilities tend to mesh more readily with artistic sensibilities although not always.

I know quite a few people who went to Tisch, they all regretted it. Not because it's a bad school but just because undergrad film degrees aren't that great. Tell her to go to a cheaper school and/or somewhere we she can get a scholarship for undergrad and shoot for a masters in film at the top schools. Better yet do what I did and go to school in Canada where tuition is cheap as a mofo.

Except not really because most left wingers (such a broad and meaningless term) embrace capitalism they just don't embrace absolute free market systems. A conservative would have to make a film about trickle down theory or some such and that's been pretty much debunked at this point. Greenspan has more or less recanted... not that it matters what he thinks.

Ok, Ok. Blame me and my stupid rule. :) At least I listed Opening Night which I think is brilliant. I would've listed A Woman Under the Influence and possibly Killing of a Chinese Bookie if I was listing multiple films per director.
The part that would kill me is deciding which films to lose to make space for those and others.
May I recommend after this bitchen list is complete (rep!) that you provide a simple list without all the knickknacks, so that I might copy-paste it into my ever-growing document of recommended movies?

From the sounds of it, I'm sure I won't convince you of it. But, I find Cry Baby thoroughly entertaining. I also think Waters improved considerably as a director with Hairspray and Cry Baby. It doesn't have the level of subversion of early Waters, but it has a slickness that feels like growth to me rather than "sell out." Cry Baby is a near perfect movie that both is and spoofs 50s movies like Rebel Without a Cause and Jailhouse Rock. Plus Depp has so damn much fun with the role.
Female Trouble would be my number 2 Waters pick especially for the "I hate Christmas" and Devine raping Devine scenes.

I wouldn't count on it. While the rhapsody has worn off for most, those who are dedicated to the cause of superhero films and those films that chronicle all of its mythos, as I suspect meg and a few others are, will undoubtedly keep the acclaim going strong. We all have our styles that are near and dear to us, after all.

I can't even think of a female cinematographer. Doesn't really change the matters at hand with the issue, but FYI for everyone, Kiyoshi Kurosawa has been working with a woman DP since Loft, up to now with Tokyo Sonata.

The Son got only two votes? Weird.
Yeah, sorry 'bout that. Though I find all of the Dardenne Bros. films wonderful, save for Rosetta which I can't find a copy of, I've placed my lot on La Promesse as the starting point of their cinema verite and naturalistic pacing, and thus privilege it the most of their work.

Most mentioned film all the way. There is no real justification in using average ranking over number of mentions because (a) we don't know the esteem films are held in outside the top 100, and (b) many people have stated the rankings in a Top 100 can be rather malleable and/or arbitrary. Thus I have used them only to break ties, and treated each list as 100 individual nominations.
Oh, and thanks. Once I get to the Top 100, I'll go to posting the films one at a time I think, just for fun.

Kurosawa would have either Ran, Throne of Blood, or Seven Samurai?

Shadows is almost entirely improv, I believe. It's also more sporadic. Killing of a Chinese Bookie is somewhat noir-esque and enhances the sense of subjectivity by occasionally restraining the camera to the eyes of the protagonist, meaning you see what he sees, literally.

Visually/stylistically they're all similar although Bookie may be his most beautiful color film. I don't know, a lot of people don't think very highly of Cassavetes visual technique but I think there's a great deal to be admired. Anyway in terms of tone/acting it's not drastically different but there's much less hysteria in Bookie and Shadows than in Woman and Faces. Bookie is very interesting to me because it has such a subversive take on crime, strip clubs, and that whole style of life.
Here's an interesting clip from the film:

Also Spinal, I think you might like Opening Night. It's probably his most explicit interrogation of the nature of acting/performance, and thus the hysterics are (possibly) more palatable than his other films. It's really quite surreal and has a strong Inland Empire vibe at times. Also, Michael Haneke put it on his Sight and Sound top 10.
Qrazy's suggestion of Chinese Bookie for the unconverted is a little qrazy IMO.

What do you mean by "the nature of acting/performance"?
That exact quote, or how it relates to the film? I guess I mean that Opening Night takes the representation of hysteria that Spinal takes issue with in the two films he mentions, and places it in a context (the theatre) that challenges its truthfulness and doesn't ask us to accept it as a naturalistic/realistic depiction of human behaviour and interaction. As good as it is, ON isn't one of my faves, possibly for the reason that I find it a little more schematic than his others; it's probably the closest that Cassavetes has come to presenting a thesis of sorts, which isn't really my bag (at least when it comes to his films). By the same token, I think it's that purposefulness that might make it a good re-entry point for Spinal.

That's an interesting take. I ran a series of thematic theories through my head after seeing it and this actually wasn't one of them, but it fits so perfectly. Very cool. I more or less settled on it as Cassavetes' way of showing how we all perform. How we all seem to have a certain standard placed on us for how to live and how we "need" to be viewed. Of course, Cassavetes stripped away the facade of the theater, and by proxy, our forced images by showing what happens behind the scenes.

Aw, The Birds is so pretty. I see a picture and a swoon.
So where would it be if I had made a list and it sat atop it at #1? Just posing the question, no need to answer it.

I should have had Johnny Guitar on my list, too. Massive fail on my part, since I forgot to edit it into my older list before posting it. Kind of sad to see Powell's The Red Shoes so low on the list, but that tragedy is mitigated by the fact that Secrets and Lies placed where it did, though how it can get on the MC Hall of Fame and only appear on 3 lists is rather odd.
Hedren pictures make me happy. That is all.

I don't want to create more work for trans, but since he has already agreed to at some point edit the list, you can add it now and eventually we'll see the effects.
Unless it would be too much for trans. Then, you fail. Hard.

Yeah, if you go into the original thread and either post the new list or describe the modification if it is straight-forward (e.g. "add film Y at #23, all other films down one place, film Z drops off"), I can do one last edit at the end.

Films with 5 list mentions start at around 140 or so, so I'm guessing it would land in the 110-130 range if you had entered a list,

Look at it this way - of all the films ever made, ever, there are only 211 films that did better than Secrets and Lies in terms of list mentions and average ranking.
(PS It was on 4 lists)

Announcement:
I decided to add in the three remaining lists from the older thread (Israfel the Black, Beau and ios..Sven) before continuing, because it was silly to see them sitting there when they could be added in and have an impact on the Top 100 or so.
I'm going to count down the Top 150 with these lists added. The full list on the first page has been removed (because it's out of date now), and I'll either post it right at the end, or make it available as an excel sheet for those who want to use it for recommendations.
