is MAUD really that good? i read the script/story, and it seems too unfocused and all over the place. my favorite out of the six is CHLOE, which is also an amazing movie. (my thought in the screenplay thread.)

I remember it fondly being messy in a rich, lived-in style, where issues of Christian morality are constantly in battle with a bourgeois lifestyle that accepts such transgression. Whereas someone like Truffaut celebrated a rise toward maturity and Godard challenged cinematic (capitalistic) assumptions, Rohmer displays a more engaging assessment of gender and female agency, even if the Six Moral Tales seems to initially present the same old codified impression of male subjectivity. I love the sense that in Rohmer we get someone who is still somewhat of a moralist even if he presents his scripts in ways that make us question how his characters define morality... and I love the hints of a free (and feminine-coded) transcendence that is possible in Love/Chloe in the Afternoon, and even see it here in Maud...

No.

Perceval isn't available from Netflix anymore, otherwise I'd have tracked down that one by now. However, I am intrigued by your placement of Rohmer's historical pictures as containing his best work. Save for The Marquise of O, which I rather loved in its bleached out oranges and painterly framing, I have only sought out his films based in contemporary times. What makes his adaptations resonate for you?

Save for The Marquise of O, which I rather loved in its bleached out oranges and painterly framing, I have only sought out his films based in contemporary times. What makes his adaptations resonate for you?Perceval le Gallois in particular stands out for its hilariously artificial style (a complete U-turn from his usual hyper-realism), and it's probably his most accomplished film as storytelling, as well.

After that, L'Anglaise et le duc has the most interesting subject of any Rohmer film (namely, the French revolution), and in terms of story, it's a good deal more gripping and suspenseful than any of his romantic dramas.

Triple Agent is more conventional than those films in terms of its style, but it has the second most interesting subject of any of Rohmer's films, and there's so much here to grapple with that I still don't feel as though I've exhausted it, even after three viewings.

Alas, Les Amours d'Astrée et de Céladon isn't as good as those films because here the period (the fifth century) and subject (once again, heterosexual love) preclude politics of any kind, nor is it as formally accomplished as Perceval le Gallois. Still, this is never less than masterful as storytelling, and it's enough of a departure from his usual boiler plate that I wasn't bored by the repetition.

Even if I have to soothe myself by knocking out the other three or four R1 Rohmer's after the fact, I will beat you in terms of pure volume of viewings by year's end. Small reward, but a reward nonetheless. I am pleased, though, that Summer is the representative film of his, as I fondly remember your old review for that one spurring me back in '05 to start digging into his filmography. Though incredibly slow in terms of narrative style, it's held its own remarkably well. And I can't fault those top three at all, really.
