Mad Max - 7, promise marred by some slightly stodgy pacing
The Road Warrior - 9, just about a perfect action film
Twilight Zone sequence - 10, one of the greatest, period.
Beyond Thunderdome - 10, deepens The Road Warrior with explicitly Australian imagery (love the first five minutes in particular)
Witches of Eastwick - 6.5, odd film
Lorenzo's Oil - 9.5, Italian Nolte and compassionate storytelling
40,000 Years of Dreaming - 7.5, a neat spin on the national cinema documentary
Babe: Pig in the City - 9, horrifying and enrapturing
Happy Feet - 8.5, expressive... love the Great 'Guin.

The first Babe film was directed by Chris Noonan. Miller just produced and co-wrote the screenplay.

Ah. Thanks for clarifying. I completely forgot there even was a sequel. I haven't seen it.

Beyond Thunderdome is on Netflix instant viewing, so I'll see that one soon barring internet issues. I saw Lorenzo's Oil soon after it came to video, but have only vague memories of Nolte's strange accent and liking the film.

While I may be a little late, I'd be remiss if I didn't comment on the thread that led me to this board in the first place.

George Miller has four real masterpieces, to my mind. And, these are -

Happy Feet
Babe: Pig In the City
Lorenzo's Oil
The Road Warrior

"Beyond Thunderdome" really only comes up short by this much, and that's primarily because of the soundtrack which - most in the second half - contrasts wildly with what's happening on-screen. If only he'd kept working with Brian May.

"Mad Max" is a film with a lot of great ideas, but - by his own admission - it isn't as up to snuff as the rest of his work, primarily because of his lack of experience.

"Witches of Eastwick" isn't a bad film, but it's far from his best; still, the behind-the-scenes executive meddling and their effects on poor Austalian Miller are well-known. "We need more monsters," they said. It's hardly any fault of his.

His other stuff is particularly unappreciated, and often goes unmentioned. "The Dismissal" still remains as one of the best miniseries' to ever come out of Australia, and "40,000 Years of Dreaming" - well, that's been mentioned a couple of times in here.

Welcome! Great to see another lover of Pig in the City. I think I'm going to revisit Lorenzo's Oil at some point. Been a while and for a big Miller fan like myself, my lukewarm reaction seems wrong.

The only thing that got to me, at first, was the same thing that got to Roger Ebert and a lot of other reviewers when they saw it - Nick Nolte's accent. It's not because it doesn't sound authentic, because it does. But, it sounds odd coming out of Nolte's mouth, because he's Nolte. Still, you get used to it.

Welcome warmly received.

"Happy Feet" and "Babe: Pig In the City" both need a DVD re-release, and damnable quick. So does "The Road Warrior," but that kind of goes without saying, I think.

As would I, provided he'd replaced the two actors he'd chosen to play Batman (a twenty-five year old baby-faced TV actor) and Superman (a short, swarthy Hispanic actor).
