The Man Who Would Be King
Really? I saw this last year or maybe the year before and thought it was awful. Like so awful that it even manages to make Michael Caine awful within it. Sean Connery's perfectly capable of being awful without outside assistance.

Love the film to so many bits and pieces that I don't even think to question it.
But enough about that... how do you feel about my inclusion of the recently seen and jaw-droppingly incredible Utu? Have you seen it? You may not agree, and Boner certainly will disagree, I'm sure, but after seeing a handful of both Australian & New Zealand films in the context of my class (many more to come!), I've concluded thus far that NZ has the more impressive output. I like both national cinemas a great deal, though, but there's something very eerie and intriguing about the works I've seen of Maclean, Donaldson, Murphy et al. Bruno Lawrence helps--his performance in Smash Palace is one of the best I've ever seen, period.
Oh, wow, I'm jealous that you are reading it in Spanish. Nah, I'm just a typical white yank unable to speak any language other than english and pig latin.
That is actually one of the things that intrigues me, that each of the five parts are fairly independant, yet are linked by dark themes of murder. I love how it is looming in the background during Part I and I can't wait to see how it all ties in later in the book. And yeah, once the characters went to Santa Teresa, things started to get inexplicably dark and very weird. I'm looking forward to spending my reading time in this locale, especially in how it so drastically differs from the more organized and civilized France, Spain, Italy, England and Switzerland explored earlier in the novel.
I don't know if you remember these parts, but two of my favorite moments in the novel thusfar were the part in the gallery/cafe where they meet the ex-spy haunted by his dead grandmother. The other was Amalfitano's ridiculous monologue about the unreliablity of Mexican intellectuals, which goes on for 2 1/2 pages, and makes absolutely no sense.
I don't want to spoil anything, but it's a good thing you like Amalfitano and his rants. He certainly likes ranting. The whole second half of book two is, I don't know, a random foray into his various, ridiculously esoteric curiosities. And the end of book two! Oh, it ends with one of my favorite quotes, at once a statement about literature in general and a mission statement for itself. It's not the actual end of book two, but it's close to it. A page or two before the final paragraph. I wonder how the translation treats it...

I haven't seen it. Actually I'm pretty woefully inexperienced in 80s NZ cinema on the whole really. Did you watch that Allison Maclean short where the woman pulls the foetus out of the kitchen sink?
And [Gone With the Wind] didn't make a single list out of 27.
Thank
God.

Just so you know, the last six films on your list won't be included because you have a three-way tie at #1 and a trilogy listed as one film. Not that you'll want to change anything (other than moving Holy Grail up a few spots, obviously, because it deserves to remain on your list), but I just thought I'd inform you of the "no ties or listing trilogies as one film" rule.
:) Ah, welcome home, ya big lug.
Thanks! I was *this* close, actually, to a Mickey One mention, but in my heart of hearts it would've felt like I was just doing it to ensure its inclusion. But if I'm honest with myself, there's really no reason it shouldn't be on a top 100. Unfortunately, there is a plethora of other deserving films as well. Woe is this.

For the record, and trans, I hope you're reading this, The Beaver Trilogy is actually just one film, which is a compilation of three short films. They do not exist on their own.
And D'oh! about the three-way tie. Check my list again. I'm going to maneuver things oh so slightly. (And what the heck! I'm going to replace the cheating Twilight Zone inclusion with Mickey One, because that movie kicks ass.)
Did you watch that Allison Maclean short where the woman pulls the foetus out of the kitchen sink?
Oh yes. Cuh-razy. Nice sound effects, and some of the images (the super close up of the skin, the breathing in the garbage bag, etc) are incredible.

I was just thinking about this thread. I found an old list of mine (http://web.archive.org/web/20070406211110/http://www.everyonesacritic.net/top100.asp?userid=3210) from 2006. God bless the Wayback Machine! It's really interesting seeing which films have fallen off the list and which films have remained.

I like to think of it as similar to an "acquired taste". You just don't know how good something is until you have tried more of the samplings.

I actually went over my rankings and listed all of the movies that I have given a 100 to. At some point I will probably try and completely organize that list into a Top 100, and post it in this thread.

Kinda cynical about mubi.com, but the I like the screencaps they choose for films' main pages. For that reason here's my favorites list (http://mubi.com/users/20478/films) (a bit over 100 and in the order of most recently added, but whatevs).

Metropolitan
A film with an 8/10 makes your top 100? I don't have any interest in ratings debates, but man... aren't you studying to become a professor or currently teach classes? I don't want you teaching my course.

In any case, I have a slightly revamped one of these I completed recently. I'll look it over and post it because lists are the greatest thing.

True enough. I hadn't wanted to assign too high of a grade to Metropolitan after watching it on Tuesday, lest it start yielding diminishing returns in my mind. I've amended the grade to better represent my current impression, after doing some more reading on Stillman. I'd rather low-rate a film and bump it up than overrate a film to begin with. Thanks for catching that.

The newest movie on my list is The White Ribbon. I have a rule not to include any movies from the current year or the previous year, so I'm less influenced by what's popular at the moment... or something. 2010 movies are eligible, but there's nothing from that year that I like enough.

I'm a drunk, just like the Steve Buscemi character. No, I just really love the characters, its slice of life focus and its subtle portrait of the effect of alcoholism. I'm simultaneously charmed and somewhat disturbed by it every time I watch it, which is usually during a nasty hangover. Yup, I'm a drunk.

As a fan of the Bond films I could have easily included three or four others, but chose to be sparing to allow room for other films.
I chose From Russia With Love because I really think it is the best of those films. Just a great spy film. Diamonds Are Forever was the first Bond movie I ever saw and it had a huge impact on me. There may actually be better films in the series, but that one holds a special place for me.

I thought that might raise a few eyebrows.:)
As I said though, the numbering really doesn't mean much as these are all movies I really like.
I know Star Trek III is considered by most to be one of the "bad" Trek films, but for my money it hit all the right notes and captured the spirit of the original series better than any of the other films.

There are so many great movies on that list, Spinal. Then there are others which completely offset their inclusions, to the point where I'm asking myself, "Gah, did he put that on there just to mess with people?" :P
Also, now I'm really wondering why and how I got it into my head that you were ever a hardcore Sorkin & Fincher fan.

Nah, I don't see that. It's a perfectly good list. There are a handful there that I personally don't care for at all but they are regarded highly by many others.

1. As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty (Jonas Mekas, 2000)
I started this a little while ago and never did finish it. Was enraptured while watching, but life took over. I need to start over again.
Coincidentally, I watched Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania many months ago and never posted anything as I didn't even know what to say really. It has stuck with me though, and frankly it might be the greatest and most moving documentary I have seen.

Interesting to see this as your top Keaton. Don't think I've ever heard anyone rave about it before.
I was really, really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. In terms of construction, in terms of setup and payoff, with Keaton applying every single thing he learns doing the movie in his rescue of his ladyfriend at the end. It's slight, and it's not as ambitious as The General, but I thought that film had more dead time in between the wow-moments, while College was consistently entertaining.
It's mostly negligible, since both are fantastic, and The General would lead my next batch of favorites.

Like Raiders, I've seen bits of the Mekas and I'm sure I wouldn't dispute it's #1 spot when I find time to properly absorb the whole thing. Maybe on my deathbed.

Post-60s Godard, lesser Bresson, Trust, Petra von Kant, Design for Living, Devi!! We're going to get along just fine.
I'd also like to point out that Chinese Roulette is on the list just to remind KF of its existence.
I personally hate Palindromes, but I sorta get Solondz love even if nothing since Storytelling has worked for me.

I was just thinking that I haven't made a top 100 list for ages, not since the days when I visited Match-Cut regularly. Then I did a search on Google to see if I could dredge up my last top 100 and, roundabout, here I am. It did take a while to figure out what my last username and password were, but success.

My list has hardly changed at all since I posted it. I've added 17 titles, only two of which are in the top 50. And it's been so long since I've seen most of those movies. Maybe I should start a new list from scratch, featuring only movies I've actually seen in the last five years. That would give me an excuse to actually watch some of those movies that are, in theory, my favorite movies.

2. Rear Window
3. Once Upon a Time in the West
4. The Lion King
5. The Killing
6. Seven Samurai
7. Pulp Fiction
8. 2001: A Space Odyssey
9. 12 Angry Men
10. The Bridge on the River KwaiRear Window, Seven Samurai, the two Kubrick films, and Pulp Fiction are all spicy, but I'm less keen on Inception (a film that mainly consists of scenes of people explaining the plot to each other very, very solemnly and/or shooting at each other while the portentous score and noirish visual scheme keep reminding the spectator how serious and deep this all is); Once Upon a Time in the West (Ebert was right); 12 Angry Men (an entertaining liberal sermon but a sermon nonetheless; I prefer Dog Day Afternoon and Find Me Guilty); and The Bridge on the River Kwai (the whole William Holden story line feels like padding; I prefer Brief Encounter). I haven't seen The Lion King since I was a child, but it bored me at the time (I've always been more of a Warner Bros. boy, especially Duck Amuck, One Froggy Evening, and What's Opera, Doc?).
1. The Wild Bunch
2. Apocalypse Now
3. Do the Right Thing
4. La Haine
5. Short Cuts
6. The Last of the Mohicans
7. Husbands and Wives
8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
9. Boogie Nights
10. Dazed and ConfusedThe Wild Bunch, Do the Right Thing, La Haine, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Boogie Nights are spicy. Short Cuts is also pretty terrific although I find it less stylistically exciting than Altman's best 70s films (McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Long Goodbye, California Split). Apocalypse Now has some great sequences, though the narrative, which is always on the precipice of degenerating completely into an endless series of show-stoppers, comes apart completely in the Brando scenes since as conceived Coppola's Kurtz is an abstraction rather than a character, and the repeated superimpositions of a Buddhist statue feel like a desperate Hail Mary attempt to squeeze significance and meaning into a story that can't support them. Husbands and Wives is minor Allen; it's skillfully acted but the characters as written are predictable and boring, unlike for instance Hannah and Her Sisters, Vicky Christina Barcelona and even Whatever Works (the last two are also minor but more likeable), which qualify or in some cases completely reverse the spectator's initial impressions of the characters. I haven't seen The Last of the Mohicans but the book is a lot of fun.
10. A.I.: Artificial Intelligence
9. Akira
8. Donnie Darko
7. El Topo
6. Memento
5. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
4. Mulholland Drive
3. Satantango
2. The Tree of Life
1. MagnoliaA.I., Mulholland Dr., Sátántangó, and Magnolia are spicy. El Topo and The Tree of Life are a series of disconnected show-stoppers going nowhere (more or less literally, in the case of Malick's film). Akira is convoluted and violent and has no characters; Donnie Darko is convoluted and the characters are boring teen movie clichés. Memento is clever enough, probably my favourite Nolan, but also somewhat disposable; the characters are boring neo-noir clichés (though the talented cast obfuscates this somewhat) and there's little pleasure in revisiting the movie once you know the surprises. I've only seen the first twenty minutes or so of The Holy Grail; the disc skipped and I've never been very interested to finish it, although I liked The Life of Brian and parts of The Meaning of Life.

Only a top 10 for now:
10. A.I.: Artificial Intelligence
9. Akira
8. Donnie Darko
7. El Topo
6. Memento
5. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
4. Mulholland Drive
3. Satantango
2. The Tree of Life
1. Magnolia
I'll need to work one out but I think Donnie Darko, Mulholland Dr. and Magnolia would be in the top 10.
